Happened to hear a radio interview today of Kelly Quinlan. He said both Santucci and Faulkner have told Key they won’t move for a lateral. For Santucci, he wanted an NFL job. Faulkner will only leave for a HC job he likes.

He also opined that Key will take his time and be very careful 8n his hiring decision.

Drink that coolaide. You enjoy having 4 different bosses in 3 years on any of your jobs?

That, regardless of how hopeful we are on the hire is a real challenge that so many simply dismiss. It is real.

I am hopeful. This seems like a near term problem or challenge if you want to be positive.
Never bothered me who my boss was. I know my job and I do my job. Who I report to has no bearing on how well I do my job.

Besides, no one lost their boss (except for the defensive assistant coaches). They lost their boss's boss. As long as there is continuity in the assistant coaches and the schemes are essentially the same, the play caller is about putting the players in the right position.

Many people are independent contractors. They might have 4 different bosses in 3 weeks, or even in 3 days. If you work on projects, it is highly possible that you have an administration manager, but are assigned to different project managers for projects. You could very easily work for 4 different project managers in 3 years. I have worked for 4 different project managers within a few months. Just because some people think it is normal to have the same boss for 10 years doesn't mean that is actually what the majority of people experience.

The challenge is to find not just one good coordinator but a string of good coordinators. More turnover means more chances something will go wrong.
Too much to expect anyone can bat a thousand, but hoping Brent can hit this one out of the park.

LOL. Players can chose to come and go like Independent Contractors now. Post Spring practice could be interesting with our Independent Contractors.

The “as long as” is a huge assumption. Are you saying a new coordinator search should be limited to coaches with the same defensive approach? No, then can the new DC bring in new assistants if he feels they can do what he wants better? Yes, then your assumption is wrong. Thus the challenge with constant change.

Constant change for football players generally does not help them reach their potential. Some change is expected and can be positive. The turnover on the defensive staff has been high the past 3 seasons.

Hoping for the best. Can’t assume it is for the best.

I see no reason to insult my conclusions but if you want to go there I’ll do that. Your choice. I simply disagreed with your conclusions but I didn’t make light of them. I don’t appreciate you doing that to me.

We agree that long term it could be fine. I just don’t see how you can see this as being good short term, Spring ball, Spring Portal and the 2025 season.

I hope you are right and I am wrong.

Interesting. He'd have some obvious familiarity with Jones the new CB coach.
Alabama fired him but other than the 2nd half against UGA and the Vanderbilt game, I thought the defense was pretty good the other 11.5 games. Seemed obvious during the Oklahoma and Michigan games that Milroe was consistently putting the defense in bad spots.

Nobody knows if it’s going to be good, bad, or neutral. We’re all hoping for the best. We will have really good options to replace a really good coach. That is a good thing.

2024 - Alabama Co-DC (#10 DFEI)
2023 - Wisconsin Co-DC (#32 DFEI)
2022 - Cincy Co-DC (#35 DFEI)

I don't see where he's ever been the main DC anywhere. Has extensive experience with DBs. His experience at Wisconsin and Cincy are probably the most comparable to GT in terms of resources and having to "coach up" talent that's in the same recruiting bands as GT. Has a reputation for developing REALLY good DBs...which will be attractive to our strong DB recruiting class this cycle. The passing defenses at each stop during his time at each school has been one of the top passing defenses in the country.

I can't find anywhere why Deboer fired him even though 'Bama played relatively well on defense, with their secondary finishing #19 in passing defense. I do remember a couple of instances where one of their safeties acted like selfish a-hole acting out on the field causing 'Bama costly penalties.

He's been mentioned as a candidate at several schools to coach different position groups, and as James Madison's DC.

As a comparison, GT finished ranked #53 DFEI this season, a two tier improvement over our DFEI of #77 in 2023. Santucci was definitely making strides improving our defense, and it's possible for the next DC to improve even more than what Santucci did last season.

Something to also remember, Key has Saban as a resource. Saban is still a big part of the 'Bama program behind the scenes. If there was anything concerning about Hitschler, Saban would probably have said something to Key. Saban is VERY honest about evaluating coaches and players...almost cold hearted about it.

In no particular order, here's a few names we could consider:

Jeremiah Johnson, Louisiana Tech DC
John Kay, Rice DC
Jon Heacock, Iowa State DC
Michael Scherer, UNLV DC
Nick Benedetto, Northern Illinois DC
Joe Klanderman, Kansas State DC

We should be able to afford all of these, while Klanderman would cost us the most. He currently makes $825K so it would cost us nearly $1M to get him I would imagine.

The biggest thing we need to do right now is keep as many kids on the defensive side from transferring as possible. Doubly so for the recruits we just signed.
