While he hasn't caught a bunch of passes other than a TD late in the game at NC State, Antonio Messick is a vicious blocker! At 6' 3" and 195 lbs. he is a bit lighter than Smelter, but as every coach likes to say: "you weren't recruited to be a backup."

I saw him put a safety out of the game at Tulane with a killer block. He also made a nice catch at NC State so it's not like he hasn't seen some action. While it would be nice to have Smelter, we have folks that can step up and play just like Harrell and Marcordes did at linebacker when Paul Davis went out.

Saving Smelter for the playoffs, I like it!

In all seriousness though I don't blame uga for his injury, I didn't think he was down seeing it live and the whistle was late. The guy tackling him was just trying to get him down. I don't blame the refs either because if smelter breaks loose and gets 10 more yards there I think they would have called it that way on the field.

Now I need to shower off the filth I just stepped in defending a dawg
I think his knee was hurt on the initial collision not the second put down. I really don't blame the defender. I wasn't sure he was down initially.

I'm pretty sure one of our DB's made a similar "post-late whistle" type tackle against Clemson. Just an unfortunate result if that is in fact what got him injured.

@GTJason , you make good point about the guy tackling Smelter if no whistle was blown. I've read reports of the whistle being blow and not being blown. If it wasn't blown, it should have been. Refs seemed late on the whistle much of the game.

We'll need someone to step up. Waller doesn't present himself as well a target on passes so JT would need to be throwing to tighter windows, I don't think that will change overnight. Summers has quick feet in blocking, but he doesn't blow people up. Messick might be the closest simile who could "step up". Smelter was a huge part of our offense and we're going to have to adapt without him. FSU also has the best corners we'll face all year, probably need days and laskey healthy and in steady doses this Saturday.

Word I'm hearing is that Smelter is doubtful for ACCCG but should be back for bowl game.

LOL, never mind. Should have read through the entire thread before posting.

From an injury point of view, we did about as good as could be expected from the cage fight in the cesspool. I would expect almost everyone is banged up a good bit. But having won, there isn't the sting of having lost a 14 point favorite position at home. The UGAg players were going off the field a lot too.

It was good to have the week off in advance to heal up the dings (UGAg took the week off too with a non-opponent). Neither FSU or we have that luxury this week.

Could someone snoop the FSU sites and find out their injuries? I would think they have injuries too after that battle with Florida!

When I saw smelters injury it looked like watsons injury for clemson. Not bad enough to tear his ACL but bad enough to pull or strain the ligaments and I would rather not put his pro career at risk when I'm very confident we can beat these idiots without him by running it down their throats.

They are good to go. They are talking about the good fortune of not having to face Smelter, however.
