Incoming Transfers?

NCAA is garbage when it comes to these things, but you guys already knew that. Justin Fields and other notable players got his waiver to play before they even submitted the documents to transfer. Here we are 6 weeks from the first game and we don't know if 3 guys can even suit up this year when they announced the transfer a while back.

Ezzard for example announced his move on February 2nd. It's been over 5 months.
I noticed that also is it just because we are in the ACC? Or is it something we aren't doing?

Pretty sure it’s been said the NCAA trumps the ACC ruling now
This. Plus those complaining about the timing of it, even though these 3 guys had announced transfer way back when, they all just enrolled and started this summer, so their waivers weren't able to be officially applied for until then. So its only been about 6 weeks since they've all applied.

After Tathan Martell and Justin Fields received a waiver for basically not wanting to sit behind better players, hard to turn any kid down. Of course, we're talking about the NCAA...

That's absolutely not true, but people DO keep saying it.

"By ACC rules, Ezzard would have to sit out a season at Tech and lose a season of eligibility, as he is transferring within the conference. That would mean he would sit out the 2019 season and have three seasons remaining. However, by the NCAA’s rules that normally grant Division I athletes five seasons to complete their eligibility, his situation wouldn’t be any different at any other FBS school. He would sit out the 2019 season and then have time for only three seasons before his five-year window closed."

If Ezzard loses a year of eligibility AND has to sit out...CGC did a heck of a job 'crootin Ezzard to come to GT. Usually that all but eliminates a kid from transferring within a conference.

Usually the NCAA and conference waives that intra-conference rules if a coach leaves. We'll see...

From what I understand, there are no rules or precedents for granting immediate eligibility. There is a policy that the committee uses to evaluate each case on an individual basis. See below:

“A request for immediate eligibility can now be granted if the transfer was due to "documented mitigating circumstances that are outside the student-athlete's control and directly impact the health, safety and well-being of the student-athlete."

A high percentage of cases, 60% or more, are granted.

That's the NCAA, which is the first of two hurdles Ezzard would have to clear.

The second hurdle is the ACC, which requires a unanimous vote from the representative of every member institution. This is why few intra-conference transfers are granted eligibility.

That article only notes that the process is no longer as punitive, which is true. The ACC no longer prohibits schools from providing financial aid during the first year after transfer, as used to be the case. It still requires a year of sitting out unless the ACC approves the waiver unanimously by a vote from all institutions. The ACC rules are still more stringent than the NCAA rules and trump any decision the NCAA makes in granting Ezzard a waiver, although the NCAA would have to first grant Ezzard a waiver for the ACC to consider it. Note in the quote from the article below that the article was mainly talking about docking an extra year of eligibility and the loss of financial aid.

"The ACC, with similar rules to other “Power 5” conferences, would previously have docked Watts a year of eligibility for staying within the conference. And during the year Watts had to sit out, he would not have been eligible to receive a scholarship from UNC. He would have had to pay his own way until he was eligible in 2020."

Didn't DJ Donley block a punt or field goal or something too? I seem to remember someine feom that era doing that and getting excited about them, only to never hear from them again.

Yep.

The only thing I can find on the ACC rules is from the ACC manual:

Waivers.Waivers of this rule may be considered by the faculty athletics representatives, acting as a committee of the whole, provided the student-athlete has qualified for an exception or waiver of the NCAA four-year college transfer rule. Further, the waiver request must demonstrate objective evidence that extraordinary circumstances beyond the student-athlete’s control warrant relief from this rule (e.g., personal hardship, family hardship). It is intended that waivers must meet a high threshold for relief and are not anticipated to be frequently approved. In general, coaching change alone is not sufficient circumstances for a waiver to be approved. (Revised: 5/2015)

Is there a more recent revision? Sounds like a change was made in 2018-2019 on intra-ACC transfers.
