Here is a stat for you, Atlanta is the 17th most dangerous city in America.

Your question was would you let your kid go to Georgia Tech and live on campus. And you posted this on a Georgia Tech Board. Leaving out all the rest of the back and forth, I just find that head scratching.

What list are you looking at? The one at https://www.neighborhoodscout.com/blog/top100dangerous doesn't even list Atlanta in the top 100. The closest would be East Point, GA at #32. And of those most dangerous cities, the majority of them are democrat bastions. Also, https://www.cbsnews.com/pictures/the-most-dangerous-cities-in-america/50/ doesn't have Atlanta listed in the top 50.

Conrad’s Gramps, you get the most racist question of the board award.

Had one of us conservatives asked that question there would be mods jumping like fleas to delete it and 6 weeks of blasting us.

You need to evaluate the criteria. Also, you need to look at violent crime density within the City. You'll find that both Georgia State and Georgia Tech are in very low crime density areas.
Since no service I have found even ranks Atlanta in the top 100 most dangerous cities, it's all meaningless, other than that Tech and State are both in low crime areas.

I just saw this thread and am TOTALLY confused by it. My wife and I used to live in the burbs and moved 5 years ago into town, and now live about 1 mile east of the downtown skyscrapers (Old Fourth Ward). We are EXTREMELY safe, and feel MUCH safer than our former suburban neighborhood. (And statically as well, we are...)

SOUTH of downtown has issues, but downtown the only real issues are the liberal city administrators who refuse to keep repeat offenders locked up. We get a crime report in our area, and the VAST majority of criminals arrested are multiple repeat offenders.

Nevertheless, in town is quite safe, imho. (And has less traffic as well.)

When I was at Tech, it was sketchy, if not dangerous, just off campus.

30 years later, my daughter went there. I had a suburban neighbor ask me how I could let her go there. I asked when the last time he was in Midtown was - years ago he says.

Well, I said he should go visit, and then decide.

So gramps, you should go visit, and decide for yourself.

BTW - she got a Biomedical Engineering degree, from the #1 program in the country. She is doing quite well, has several patents, and was as safe as she would've been at any campus in America.

When I was at Tech, on campus was extremely safe. Just outside of campus was also pretty safe, unless you were walking home with your iPod/iPad/iPhone out at 3am (oh how many robbery reports we got over emergency sms system about these on 10th Street).

My little brother just graduated from Georgia State and he described their campus as pretty safe, but definitely has more unsavory folks directly on campus (which was extremely rare at Tech).

Overall, id say either one is safe. Id just give her some pepper spray to keep on her and advise her not to travel alone past midnight. Tech has the stinger shuttle in case you were on campus late and needed a ride home at a weird hour, which I would also recommend. Good luck and I think it's nice you are looking out for your family member. Don't really understand why your are getting bashed (don't know the back story anyways).

Showing my age here, but when I was a Tech, it was the Okeefies who made things unsafe both on and off campus. Fortunately, Tech absorbed Okeefe HS and most of the surrounding neighborhoods where those punks lived.
