How Much Time Is Reasonable To Evaluate CDS?

More than once Iā€™ve heard CDS say, ā€œThatā€™s on me as a coach.ā€ Donā€™t think I ever heard TFG say that, though I could be wrong.
Anyone comparing Damon and Geoff is simply trying to draw a reaction. No one truly believes that if they were paying attention while Collins was at the helm.

One of the long post on previous pages referenced accountability, as if Damon hasnā€™t accepted the results or deflected blame. Huh? Not only has he said itā€™s on him, Iā€™ve heard him say at least 10 different times that ā€œinjuries are part of the game, canā€™t hideā€.

Although injuries (and their down stream impact) have clearly wrecked this season, heā€™s never used that as an excuse.

I believe it was you that said it elsewhere, and Intruly believe itā€™s that simpleā€¦Our program is not anywhere close to being able to absorb all the bad things that have happened to the 24-25 squad.

I canā€™t link the article from Alex Farrer (from JOL) because itā€™s behind a paywall, but many of you should go and read it. Thereā€™s so many takeaways pertinent to this discussion.

It just might give you a greater appreciation for Damonā€™s mindset as a coach, or why we are struggling. Spoiler alertā€¦he doesnā€™t take an opportunity to blame our troubles on injury. He believes you can win with 6 or 7, but as I said earlier, thereā€™s always a butā€¦

Give a read, itā€™s worth $10.

YES. You can win with a 6 or 7 man rotation, if it's the right 6 or 7 and they are playing at a "high level". Yes. I went there. It's about talent.

Agreed with all the points he made there, but I donā€™t think they even have to be playing at a high level. Like he said, all of them must be plugged in and doing their job.

GT fans know this because Bobby did it annuallyā€¦butā€¦.his 6-7 man rotation were a lot different than ours. Different game today, but help is on the way.

I also thought his comments about why weā€™re getting off to slow starts, and our differences in play between the halves were spot-on. The careless turnovers and silly fouls have to stop because heā€™s right that our D has been good enough to keep us in the game.

Early in the season it was second half start, we got that fixed, and now itā€™s first start.

I am watching Alabama running the Georgia Tech offense to perfection all around. As well as energy and defense. Vandy is trying the same, but with less talent at all the spots. As we all say and know, the level of individual talent and energy both ways is key to our offense. And that is what Damon says when describing his game plan. Hopefully we can get and retain more talent. But I think that comes with patience ... and winning..

Agreed Tommy! I think we are getting high-level recruits (now), and we all know talent makes coaches look really smart, but we need to be able to get them for more than a year or so.

The glass half empty is if our good players leave. The glass half full is that every game I saw tonight in the SEC and ACC are all running the "Georgia Tech" offense. All we have to do do is get some of them in the portal. They already know the system. I am trying to be optimistic on something that we cannot control. I am looking at Pat Kelsey's Louisville and their whole team is made up of mostly 4 or 5 year transfers, they are beating SMU on the road by 26, and they are top 25 this week with a 14-5 record in his first year. Louisville may be the way things will be in the future regarding getting to know players' names.

That's certainly the challenge, but I don't think that we have a shot at landing a transfer class similar to what Kelsey put together.

Simply because our bag is closer to one of those old-school brown paper bags, whereas L'Ville is walking around with 55 Gallon Brute trash bags!

Sometimes, we are able to fill ours up and land some solid pieces, but we still have to manage it. The Cardinals buy whatever they want.

Kelsey is a solid coach too... He gets the most out of his guys for sure.

He also brought 3 very good players (2 seniors) with him from a winning Charleston team & the Louisville program certainly offered him a coaching deal & portal/NIL resources for a quick turnaround. Not to mention a fan/alumni supportive base that is matched only by similar elite programs.

In Kenny Payne's last year, I was in Louisville for a meeting with one of our clients. I stayed in the hotel directly across the street from the Yum Center.

Their record was terrible, they were coming off a poor season and a couple of upsets against small schools. They had a 9PM game against Bellarmine in like the 3rd game of the season.

You would have thought that the damn Rolling Stones were in town there were so many fans in and around the arena. They wanted him gone, but they were still there in droves.

I'm not saying that the two situations are the same, they're not, but we should consider taking a page.

For anyone that has attended a Louisville game their fanbase is VERY different than almost college programs. Most of their fans are people that live in Louisville as opposed to being grads of the school. Their takeover of McCamish on 3/25/23 was impressive. thirteen or more buses came down from Louisville for a team that was, at the time, 4-24.

I wish we would each out to the inner city basketball fans and give them something worthy of their dollar. it would completely change the atmosphere of the arena.

  1. I do NOT dislike CDS and thought the hire was a good one when we made it.
  2. I admittedly am NOT a basketball guru or super serious fan as those of you on this board are
  3. I thought Year 1 with CDS went about as well as could be expected under the circumstances
  4. I have NOT been satisfied with the results thufar this yearā€¦.disappointed would be the right word
Given all of that I want to be clear I am NOT calling for any changes at this stage (not that my opinion matters much anyway).

But I am curious amongst our more knowledgeable fans as to how much time is fair to evaluate CDS and his program? If this year turns into a lost year (as certainly seems likely or at least possible at this point) does he get one more year before we can judge him? Thoughts?
You do not want me to answer this question.

I remember a Louisville game at McCamish where they took over and there were tour buses parked on 10th street for what seemed like all the way to Hemphill (not really). Not sure if it was 2023 that I remember. I think it was earlier, but maybe not. My point is same as yā€™allā€™s. Their fans are diehard.

That's why it grates my nerves when someone comes on here and says "Louisville is now killing it, so GT should be able to do the same thing"!!

That's TIC obviously, but the point remains. Not all situations are the same as they might appear on the surface.

Not sure who you think said we should be able to do it too..... they have so many more advantages over us it is a much steeper Hill for us to climb.

Does geofffff even own socks? Or know how to put them on? Heck, as far as I know, the guy can't even walk and chew gum at the same time......
My mom used to say that about me when I was a wee (un-coordinated) lad.

You making that connection between me and the un-nameable one:
