How Much Time Does Is Reasonable To Evaluate CDS?

In fairness to ‘81 Jackets, Dwayne Morrison was only making $42,500 vs Damon’s $2.5mm… but The Winston reds that Dwayne smoked during games were only $1.50/pack so there’s that…
Dwane was a good assistant coach when I was there. He was a good recruiter, the main one who snagged Rich Yunkus. He was Coach Hyder's second coaching hire, giving him two assistants by 1964. Dwane was assistant at South Carolina before that, taking over that program the last half of the 63-64 season, replaced by Frank McGuire. The son of former Major League pitcher Johnny "Jughandle" Morrison, he played there in 1950 and 51, averaging 20 points and 10 rebounds per game as a senior.

FYI. I never saw him smoke as an assistant. He demanded everyone play tough, and his famous quote was, "when you foul someone, make em go to the line cross-eyed". He went to Mercer as head coach in 1970 to bring their program into D1. I actually liked his assistant coaching style and was overseas most of the time he was Tech head coach, hired when coach Hyder retired in 1973 .

Saw Mercer play when he was coach. They were scary good. First time I ever saw that many players with what we now refer to as length.

I remember him being derided for his “stop, look, and listen” offense as it was called when he came to Tech. But he was a competitor and knew that Tech couldn’t compete with the athletes in the ACC so he used a slow down offense. There was no shot clock so the offense could wait all day for the defense to make a mistake or get impatient. I was fascinated by it from a strategic standpoint.

His record at Tech was bad and he had many detractors but I knew from his Mercer days he was a really good coach. Basketball was a low budget priority at Tech at that time, however.

At least. And with additional headwinds of anything goes NIL/transfer portal it is a difficult to impossible job that he was recruited for. He didn’t apply for this spot His guys are George, Ndongo, Soaure, the only voluntary frosh holdovers; Mustaph, DO & Sutton. The rest are best we can get temporary plugs out of the portal in an attempt to make the team competitive during rebuilding. McCollum & O’Brien for 1 year, Reeves for 2 & maybe Powell for 2. At least 1 more recruiting class or 2, without losing what is already here, before any fair judgment.

CDS didn’t come from another school to bring players & recruits with him like
Michigan, Louisville, Arkansas, or St John’s got. He didn’t come to a powerhouse program that ranked kids want to come to. And the guys who already want him fired, what do you do next. Start a new rebuild? With who? With what? You gonna get Bruce Pearl & have his entire team transfer?

When posters demean the guy from day of his hire and/or trash, ridicule or criticize his coaching after every loss, tough to suddenly take you seriously with any credibility in saying you don’t want a change or are calling for fairness.

I don’t spend much time on the football threads, but some of those guys are even more vicious, outrageous & delusional than you find here, bashing HC, staff, QB, kicker after they ****kicked UGA, only to lose in 8 OTs, playing an entire 2nd half without 5 of their best defensive backs. The worst thing about GT sports might just be many of their so-called fans
It seems to me that he is one player away from a good to very good team.

Some will scoff at this but I’m always struck in basketball with how fine the line is between a bad team and a good team based on just a few players. The team this year seems to have lost its way and may not recover.

Wish we could add a solid 5 and a top shooting guard. Right now, as someone has said, we have too many starters who either have limited roles or who would be better off the bench.

So close yet so far.

As a head coach when you look at his records he wasn’t TERRIBLE he had a couple winning years in the mid 70’s but it seems he didn’t recruit well later in his tenure and so GT was unprepared for the transition to the ACC which was far and away the best basketball conference of the late 1970’s—entire 1980’s and Tech just got whooped on the floor when they joined.

It’s largely unwatchable, IMPO, so I don’t. Poor D and inconsistent O just don’t make for good entertainment. I’m keeping tabs from afar, and noted the recent turn around, but the Cuse and SMU games squashed that. We’ve got some good talent, just have to build a team now.

I'm gonna be one of the scoffers NE ;) . If you upgrade 30% of your available minutes with talented players, yes your team is typically going to be pretty good. It's just hard to add a good 5 - there are a limited number of 18-22 year old men on the planet who are 6'10+ and freakishly athletic. The top shooting guard, we can get - it just takes some NIL support.

From my not-so-insider knowledge, the women's team has a benefactor and they are 15-1. Coincidence?

Then it didn't help to run of Jalon Moore, Devion Smith, and Miles Kelly.

And the reality is we aren't going to talent our way to relevancy. A bad coach who can bring in good talent is basically just asking for disappointing years followed by our best players going somewhere else to get paid.
This is Paul Hewitt. Doesn’t work long term.

Give him one more year. That's it. With the portal it no longer takes 4 years to build a good team. If he gets a really good 5 AND keeps what he has or is getting, he has the talent to win. Period. Batt may have missed on this hire.

Does he look like he knows how to coach this team or prepare for our opponents?

An emphatic no. That said I think 57 is correct, one more year. We should know by the end of year 3 if his recruiting abilities overcome his on-court ability.

For those of us that are older this is exactly the same as Bobby C. He, however, had Kevin Cantwell and Perry Clark to handle the X's and O's

Oh, having a generational point guard also helps.....

You could give him top 3 talent in the ACC and at best he will have us on the bubble. Watch the games. He doesn't appear to have a clue what he's doing.

What hurts is that I was at all three of the wins on that three game W streak and the team was actually FUN to watch. Idk how they reverted back to the ****ery so fast!

The real question is why can't GT BB have sustained success. Since the 1985-86 season GT BB has had only 4 seasons where they won more than 8 Conference Games. Multiple ADs, 5 BB Coaches and yet GT BB can't consistently be an upper tier ACC BB team except for a year here or there,

What is the core issue? Is GT not willing to pay for a proven coach? Are proven coaches unwilling to come to GT? It there another reason? Until GT can figure out what the core issue is with our Basketball Program we will continue to be a lower tier ACC BB Team.

Being in Atlanta where there are a lot of very good HS Basketball players would seem that getting to the top half of the ACC consistently would not be near impossible. I have no clue. I sure hope someone at GT has an answer. This rinse and repeat cycle sucks at best!

Find a good coach that can teach X's and O's and improve skills. Not some guy that thinks he can good players and expects them to win 1 on 1 matchups over and over.

Use NIL to pay for talent.

This is, again, where the SEC is kicking the ACC's ***.

He’ll get 3-4 more years. Paul Hewitt contract killed us.

Bobby Cremins was such a hoot. Probably the worst courtside coach I’ve ever seen at Tech and yet the winningest coach I’ve ever seen at Tech.

I still have images of him jumping around, white mop of hair flopping, yelling unintelligible things and running out of time to actually come up with a play, and then some superstar on the team takes matters into his own hands and wins.
