If he does not do well enough to have any leverage, we should consider moving on to another candidate.

I will add that if he does win the Costal, he will have some leverage.
Some? If he was to win the Coastal we would be dumb not to hire him.

I’m not saying I predict that will happen, but if Key gets us around the 8 win mark with an appearance in the ACCC, we would be insane to get someone else.

The problem for him in negotiations will be that he probably won't be considered for any other open HC positions. If we offer him a lower contract with performance incentives, he can either take that or be an OL coach somewhere else next year. I suppose he could gain leverage though if we whiff on a few other candidates.

Not sure that is true. If he does well enough to garner serious consideration here, he may very well have other options elsewhere. Especially if he wins the Coastal and performs well against Ugag, the ACCC opponent, and in the bowl game.

Don't underestimate what is going on. I asked my football player students if they knew what was happening at Tech. They did. They knew we knocked off a ranked opponent after firing Geoff. Anyone subject to a coaching change is watching.

Which programs with current open positions or likely open positions do you think are going to go after him?

Shouldn't that tell you something about us hiring him then?
What should it tell you? When Bobby Ross left Maryland, Tech was the first and only call made to him. We won a Natty. (Of course, Ross later said if he knew how bad it was at Tech, he would not have taken the job.)

At this point? None. But that can change with a 7-3 finish (with a bowl win), a good showing against Ugag and in the ACCC game. Also, there will be more job openings over the next few months. Who knows which one of those future openings would be interested in Key if he performs well here.

btw, only tangentially related, if you want some scheme porn, watch Kansas.

They do a TON of really fun stuff.

My brother and I (who I coached with), were geeking out last night on this version of GH counter:

They orbit-motion, turning what I would call "Gun Left, Ace, Split-Right" into what I would call "Pistol, Pro-I Left, Twins-Right", then run Counter left with the Fullback crossing the face of the QB to give the power look, and then making a 45 degree cut to follow the guard's kick block.

They're a hoot :)

On the flip side of this. He may not want any of those options.

The first ones that came to mind for me were Arizona State and Stanford. Stanford isn't open at the moment though David Shaw is definitely on the hot seat out there. ASU is intriguing but could they handle another NFL head coach even one who has better college credentials than Herm Edwards did?

I don't know that Rhule would want either of those but I definitely feel like he could sit out for a year and then come back when the "ideal" job in his mind comes open.

LOLOL, for the record, I've gone back and forth a billion times on what I would call those formations, but I'd ACTUALLY probably call it:
11, Gun-Left, Flip, Tight Right (unless I had names for my formations).

This is fair but it's also fair to analyze the finishes to both games, particularly Duke. That should've been a blowout.

I haven't made up my mind - and, of course, that's what the new AD is lurkin' and waiting for - so I'm curious to see how things play out from that perspective.
Both games should have been blowouts, with 3 score differentials. We went prevent on Pitt and allowed them to score 2 TD's at the end of the game.

You guys have legit points, but these would be quibbles if the change had not been made. Key has cleaned up a lot of stuff, but it's far from perfection at this point. I think the fanbase is willing to give Key some time.
