Has the hype been humbled?

We’re at something like a 3.03 star rating and we averaged 3.0-3.05. Not exactly a needle moving.
Well we are about to get another 4 star CB, and we have a 2 star reclassified LB. The average will go up. Plus 3 starts range greatly in rating. You’re better off doing a composite average or rivals rating average.

The OL wasn’t the issue.

When you start a running QB who practiced with the defense and call RPO plays for 3 straight quarters and he keeps 20 times, it reflects a coaching decision prior to the game.

I think CGC decided to use this game as a scrimmage. I dont think he ever planned to go full spread, I think he wanted to keep the offense under wraps for upcoming games.

Maybe IBEEBALLIN can help me on this. I think CGC was playing for the next 5 weeks, USF , Cit, Temple, NC and Duke still haven’t seen our playbook.

I think this was a chance to put our guys in live fire against the best team in the country in a hostile environment and see who would do what.

I think LJ is our QB for the foreseeable future and I still see a 70% chance we are 5-1 after six.

This team has talent, Mason had 72 yards and a TD in this game and Howard had 15 rushing and 57 receiving out of the backfield.

This is wishful thinking. There is no way a HC treats a big marquee rivalry game as a “preseason” game. If so, that’s troubling enough as it is.

So you think a QB keeping the ball 20 times was a fluke ? He rarely tried to pass, he was headed toward the line after almost every snap he hardly ever looked down field for a WR.

CGC said it 100 times, he wasn’t worried about Clemson he was worried about us. Getting pummeled in your first game as you are trying to rebuild is one thing, getting pummeled in your first game as you try to run your best players is another.

Now try to convince me TO is the spread QB you would start.

I don’t think that’s a fluke. I think that’s the best we come up with against Clemson with our current personnel.

I thought Collins was the wrong hire at the time, and didn't like his constant chatter since the hire. But even I am willing to go more than one game against the No. 1 team before making a judgment on this team. (Clemson's first half frankly was raggedy or it would have been worse.) Yes, he put himself in a box by talking pro style and then running QB keepers out of necessity, It is -- not yet anyway -- the team I thought it could be but I'll give it some time. As it was, welcome to P5 football, Coach.

Wow. This is probably the most un-“skeptic”-al post I’ve seen you write and I applaud your wait and see attitude.

I think he's like me, and finds CGC's style offputting. Some of us are like that. Guys like him will always rub guys like us the wrong way. It is what it is.

That’s fine. I’d even consider myself as one of those people. I don’t love his car salesman approach, but having a former player say that kind of stuff publicly is a bad look.

Hype humbled? Really? Was the hype that we were going to beat Clemson or ...maybe that we are focusing in a new direction. This will not impact recruits, do you think they thought we would win and if we did, would we need them as bad as we say we do? No, they will see where they can come in and make an immediate impact here.

The good: our defense looked better than I expected. We got gassed after awhile (a 50+ lb difference can wear u out). Yes, they ran all over us and we never got close to QB, but they have the premier line in the country. 90 of their running yards was one run where we missed the tackle in the backfield and again on outside.
The mediocre: Our offense looked pretty rough. Starting Oliver was not a good idea, Clemson will stop that type of play. He did have some good runs but his limited ability to pass is his downfall. I thought Graham looked really sharp but it was against their 2nd string (albeit Clemson’s so similar to some other teams starters). We need to settle on a qb fast and get that leadership moving. The play calling had a back-to-the-option combined with a spread feel at first with all of the Oliver run plays. This was odd to me but we will work this out.
The bad: The little things add up. Special teams mistakes, not being able to fake out a qb on a pick return, never getting near the qb (though understandable), turnovers and other silly mistakes. We gave them the ball 2x within our own 14 yard line and a missed opportunity on run back on an interception should have been another 7 for us. The score may look bad, but there is at least a 14 pt swing in it. I hate to say it but I will also put Clemson coaching in the bad. I thought it was kinda bush league to keep passing bombs to try to keep scoring. I get that you want other qbs to get experience but this felt a bit like Tony was getting in a jab for not interviewing him for the head coaching job.

So, hype is still engaged here. We are at stage zero and I think we have positives against the #1 team in the country to rally on. Dabo was almost run out on a rail until he found Deshawn, his coaching didn’t change, just personnel to run his system. Give it time here, it takes time to turnover the players recruited for 3option.

Fwiw, the hype is also engaged at the service academies...take your choice.
