Lots of life lessons here for everyone reading. Calmness, empathy, humility. And not wearing tank tops with jorts and cowboy boots. :D. And no mask. Click through to the thread to see a video of the interaction.

Oh my, that's bad AND on Camera.....and he seems to be a little bit Tipsy? Manned up and apologized and learning lesson for all involved.
Someone can and probably is always watching (and filming).

I hope it works out for all involved.

Others have been released from team for less than that, looks like GT Baseball is helping him cover things up. Based on his reaction, I would assume this isn't the first time he has reacted that way - he was the passenger! Would have expected better from team and the coaches.

Also, see that jorts are still the opening day uniform for the baseball team!

I'm sorry...as an athlete, you are told from the time you are the best bat on the team to think! Be aware of your surroundings, pay attention to how you manage yourself, you never know who is watching. I'm just surprised that no one got out and drug him back in the car.

It's a privilege to be a D1 athlete - manning up and apologizing is ridiculous in this situation. He showed his true colors.

His apology was to save face with the baseball team. This kid is toxic. No need for him on the team. I have written Danny Hall and Stansbury asking for his removal from the team and loss of scholarship. Unacceptable behavior. He is an adult even though we view them as kids.

Let’s not rush to judgement. Yes that section of video was not becoming nor his best moment, but we don’t know the whole situation and you see only what was posted and not what led up to it.

My family has been victim of parking lot “accident” scams twice.

Agree that whoever was with him should have helped and gotten him calm and in the car and off camera.

Exactly this. We don't know how it started and at the beginning of the video, the woman was cussing him out. Everybody was wrong in this situation imo. There is no excuse for how Charlie acted and he should be punished and have to personally apologize to those women. However, nobody needs to know the punishment that he receives except for Charlie, the coaching staff, and GT administration.

They had a Bernie sticker on their car, and Bernie is a socialist, so referring to them as socialists is probably a good guess. But it doesn't matter if it was a Bernie sticker or a Baskin Robbins sticker and he cursed at them for being ice cream eaters, his behavior and disposition was obnoxious. Georgia Tech would do well to be more transparent and make it public if he has been suspended from the team for awhile (which to me would be a reasonable starting point). If I were coach Hall, I wouldn't want to be associated to someone acting like this. I can't tell if Benson reached out to them directly to apologize face to face - an electronic message posted somewhere doesn't really amount to much. Nobody is perfect, but its what you do after you've made a mistake that's equally as important.

Nobody is perfect is correct. And children need to learn that ONE mistake can cost you almost everything. Hard lesson to learn but completely necessary. He should lose any scholarship he has, and removed from the team for one season. He is welcome to transfer or sit. But shouldn't be around the team for a year. Don't let *****s like this brush stuff under the rug and a slap on the wrist. This kid is most likely privileged knowing the high school he came from. Don't let mommy and daddy work his way out of this. I take ZERO tolerance to kids acting like brats. It usually transfers to a$$hole adults.

Yep. Lets imagine for a second an alternative universe. One where they barely tap the car in front and the young ladies get out to see what happened to their car. Charlie Benson and the driver get out, are super apologetic and nice. They smile, say sorry again but wow are they lucky there's no scratches or damage. Then the lady gets back in the car and posts "wow, just ran into a Georgia Tech baseball player - he was the most well mannered, nicest person I've met in a long time!"

I appreciate the not rush to judgement but when you have a 5'11 man jump out and accost you in a drive through line in late at night, I would be a little agitated. I agree we didn't see what happened prior to this but in your comment - trying not to make an assumption - you say we don't know what happened before. Exactly, GT players hit the car and she got out, perhaps threw up her hands in frustration, maybe said something about paying attention and then Benson jumped out of the car and all hell broke loose. The problem here is that the players should have been the ones managing the situation and being well aware of how their actions reflected on themselves and their team.

Would like to understand how you can be a part of parking lot scam if someone else hit you from behind in a drive through line? I get that you could be "scammed" by someone not moving in front of you and the car behind hitting you...that's called not paying attention on the car behind. What we are all missing is that these two young men, not kids, not boys but men were drunk. I would imagine that the driver also had imbibed and was anxious about getting out and saying anything. He (Will Shirah, the driver) probably freaked out when he tapped/hit the lady and Benson jumped to action - definitely making an assumption. I would imagine it was an 'oh, sh*t' moment. The Cookout is about 3/4 a mile from campus at best, it was Saturday after the game, probably came from an after game baseball get together around the corner.

I definitely agree that if the players both had handled it in a manner that is drilled into you from the get go when you begin playing baseball or other sport with high aspirations, we as supporters of Ga Tech would not be embarrassed by what happened and then more importantly how they have chosen to respond to it or not respond.

Agree he should have to personally apologize to the women and GT baseball leadership should as well. From what I hear there is no punishment, he apologized to the team in a group meeting, GT wrote an apology and posted it on social media From what I read somewhere the apology wasn't sent to the women but just posted online.

Could not agree more with this. For someone to react this way and to this level of reaction, definitely doesn't deserve to be on the team. Someone said he should be off the team for a year or go play elsewhere for a year - juco and come back the next year.

Am I the only person who thinks that:
(1) we should not rush to judgement based on a 20 or 30 second video without knowing the entire story?
(2) what little I saw made me think both people (both "sides", if you prefer) were acting pretty poorly. Perhaps the women should apologize to the athlete as well?

I am genuinely surprised by the rush to judgment I see here. It reminds me of why I don't participate in twitter.

Right. No matter how another party reacts you must ALWAYS remain composed. He lost it. He has no control over his anger. Wouldn't of been good if he reacted that way and the other person had a gun. We would now be talking about a possible death. Just another entitled angry white kid. And yes, I am white. I grew up with kids like this. I was friends with kids like this. I am no longer because they are toxic people. If she "started" the argument or raised voices then we obviously know this kid has NEVER held a customer service job. You politely offer to give insurance, and apologize whole heartedly. But it sounded like him and his buddy hit her and were trying to say there was no dent or scratch. By his actions and anger id also be led to believe he had be drinking where the driver probably had been too. Men ages 18-22 make dumb decisions. I made my fair share. Especially in college. All in all this kid needs a wakeup call and stop with the coddling BS. No slaps on the wrist. Take away stuff he cares about to show repercussions for his dumb actions.
1 dumb decision can change your whole life. A loss of a scholarship or 1 baseball season is about right for punishment to hopefully save him from any future goofy outbursts.

Don‘t think it is our place to judge his punishment or non punishment for his actions. Jesus cautioned the Pharisees to not pass judgment and we should all heed that advice. Forgive and move on, none of us are perfect and it would be interesting to see everyone’s worst moments in their lives.

People on this thread either have a lot more information than is publicly available or are way out over their skis.

The video is a bad look. No doubt. The insinuations that they were:
A) drinking
B) not taken out of context by a specific clip shown without the start or finish
C) caused any actual damage

Are all important though. I don’t know definitively about any of it. I do know that the video shows one of our guys acting poorly and in a manner inconsistent with what we expect from our students (let alone student athletes). I’m interested in following the story to learn more details before rushing to dole out punishments or recriminations. Details and context matter.

I'll just say this, if this was a Georgia baseball player we would be all over it saying they should release the player and how horrible it made their team look. Have to expect it from them and of course Georgia won't do anything about it so on and so on. As well, I'll leave you all with this info which is signed off on by each and every student athlete.

Georgia Tech Student Athlete Code of Conduct: Participation in intercollegiate athletics at the Georgia Institute of Technology is a privilege extended to a gifted few. As the Institute’s most visible ambassadors, student-athletes are expected to uphold, at all times, high standards of integrity and behavior that reflect well upon them, their families, coaches, teammates, the Georgia Tech Athletic Association (GTAA), and the Institute. The Student-Athlete Code of Conduct (Code) sets expectations for how student-athletes represent the Institute and outlines potential consequences for failure to adhere to these standards. The Code supplements, but does not supersede any Institute, ACC, or NCAA policies. Student-athletes must acknowledge receipt of and agree to comply with the Code in order to participate in athletics. GTAA reserves the right to make changes to the Code. By signing the consent form, the student-athlete also acknowledges that it is the right of each sport team to develop and administer team-specific policies that may prohibit additional behavior and provide for more severe sanctions than this Code.

Frankly... the easy thing to do is kick him off the team. That may yet happen.

The hard thing (for the Institute & the GT Baseball staff) would be to figure out the balance between making this young man better going forward & setting the appropriate "standard" for current & future teammates.

One thing I do trust is the Institute & baseball staff will have a much more complete picture on how to do all that.

One option is to boot him & be done with it.... easy.

Another option is to follow through on an implied (maybe explicit) commitment that he's part of a "program" & the program will do what it takes (not to coddle) but hold accountable... to learn & be better tomorrow & next week.... & when he's 50+ (like me).

That accountability can be achieved by other means short of kicking him off team.
