Just for the sake of discussion, would you say he has a better resume as a coach than Collins did when he was hired? Plenty of people feel like we bought the sizzle instead of the steak. Would this be a repeat of same?

i know that’s how the fanbase feels about it but do we have any indication that’s what reality is? i’m asking cause that’s not something i would know since i don’t have any connection with boosters and the people who pay the money

All I know is what he said in the paper and when you have a fan base where half/more (?) are not happy with the head coach, ticket sales are down and you're having trouble finding wins, that is basically tying yourself to Collins. Some of the big $ alums even said so.

I'd say he has a lesser resume as a coach than Collins. But he has a Hall of Fame career as a player and a ton of contacts and perhaps more personality and better media skills than anyone in sports ever. Collins has put in the work in the trenches. Deion played the game and is now just getting into coaching. To be honest, I figured he'd stay one year at Jackson State and then move on to something else. The fact that this is Year 3 (I think) for him at JSU shows me he is at least committed to it and the articles I've read about what all he has done there and for other HBCU schools is pretty impressive as far as getting turf fields installed, better equipment, etc.

Like someone else said, we have to do something different. If Collins had brought in better staff, perhaps he and his marketing skills would've been that something different. Win 3 games a year and, like Crash Davis said, you're a slob. ;)

The kids don't need to know Deion as a player for him to have success. He has instant credibility and connections to donors and the local football scene. If the kids don't know him, their parents and coaches definitely will. Collins had initially looked to make headway here, but he needs to back it up with significant on-field results for anything to stick.

I just don't see an up-size to either coach. I like the no nonsense demeanor of guys like Chip Long and Travares Tillman.

Here’s a question for y’all…hypothetical of course because who knows if any of this is true/would ever happen.

We’ve already heard whispers on here and Twitter from people who have a “source” that the buyout money is there and that Deion is in the loop and ready.

If Geoff goes 7-5 or better this season…and Deion is ready to make a move…do you make the move?

There are certainly coaches that if we knew they would come here, 7-5 shouldn't be enough to keep Collins. A coach with no coaching experience beyond the FCS level, and relatively little at that level is not one of them though.

Collins was hired to handle the transition away from the triple option. The staff that was put together, and largely likely the primary reason Collins himself was looked at to begin with, was all about improving recruiting. There were positives and negatives to the approach of building a staff to try and improve recruiting specifically but one of the effects was recruiting doesn't usually pay off on the field right away. The staff's first real class wouldn't be on campus until the summer of 2020 anyways and then most true freshmen don't make an impact. So that plan, even if it paid off, wasn't likely to yield much fruit until year 3 at the earliest, especially when combined with the drastic style change of the offense. If Collins' goes 7-5 this year it looks like that plan has finally started to pay off.

Now, if Luke Fickell wants to come here and we got it lined up. Absolutely make the switch. But Deion would be a risk hire when it finally looks like our last risk hire might be working out. I don't see that as a move you can make. Now, if Collins go 4-8 or so and we fire him, we should certainly look at Deion, although I would still not really be sold on that.

One other thing and I hope this is appropriate, but if Collins doesn't perform and somehow there is a change during the on-going season, which assistant coach could hold the team together?

Agreed to the extent that I like an O'Leary or Johnson type. But will that sell these days? I do think we need to do something different because we aren't going to out recruit, UGa, Alabama, Clemson, UNC, FSU or even UVA or Louisville most of the time. What would bring excitement back? Wins. What else? Something exciting. I think Deion could do it.

Now, if we could get Luke Fickel or someone like that, I'm all for it, but would he come here and how much would he cost. That's the question. Why would someone like him come here rather than Auburn or Ohio State or somewhere like that where they have real money.

For the “he is my guy” crowd saying ADTS will be fired—-It’s not that difficult to go out and get a new guy when that is your job description. And if that guy is Deion…your job is safe.

But wouldn't the work of getting Deion on board in the first place be a little bit on TStan right now? Unless of course, the BOT or donors are out talking on GTAA behalf without TStan. Guess it depends how everything actually develops and we may never know on the outside.

My source (take it for what it's worth) is that if there is a new football coach search to be completed, it will be done by the new AD. Hopefully we win our next 10 games and it isn't an issue. That's just what I've heard. 🤷‍♂️

I don't think PrimeTime is what we need at GT. Just one fan's opinion but we need a coach who gives us a strategic advantage on game day. Recruiting is not sufficient to win in the world we want to play at. To get back to regular top 25 rankings, we need top flight talent AND Coaching and Prime isn't going to get it done much different than CGC.

Maybe we get a short term help in recruiting, but gameday operations is where we need to improve.

Agreed that we need a LOT of game day coaching help.

Just wondering if this could be a once in a lifetime opportunity to get a unique personality on our campus. Would be fun to watch at least.

highly recommend you watch some jackson state if you think that he’s not a strategic coach. they play good football and play the game right. he’d be a significant upgrade over collins in that front.

i think the most important thing though is he’s gonna actually bring out support and attention towards our team. we haven’t been nationally relevant in any decent capacity since 2014 (and that was because we gave the media no choice BUT to talk about us, i don’t think they even wanted too lol)and attendance has been declining for a long time. prime would get eyes on us and today with the NIL thing going that’s the first step into bringing difference making talent in

Not really, but I'm more interested in what's in his head than what's in his resume. His resume is still being written. We need someone who can communicate, lead, has vision and knows what he's doing. Geoff had a half decent resume - a good record as DC and a decent but short stint as HC - and he had some connections as well as a track record as a recruiter here, but the other stuff is about ten times more important. I can see why Geoff was hired based on his resume. It's the other stuff that concerns me more.

Would be interesting to go back and see if Collins had the same game management issues at Temple that he's had here. As I recall, a lot of Temple folks were glad to get rid of him, but that was coming right off of really great seasons with Rhule.

Question,
Does Deion bring the same reverence we all have for him, to the younger generation? The kids we are going after have never seen him play. Does that matter or does his legacy still resonate with the recruits?
He’s gots lots of connections in the Atlanta community. If he can recruit 8-10 studs from a 150 mile radius, and then bring in a few from neighboring states, we will be fine.
