Dabo’s Thoughts

For what it's worth, we allowed 17 points in regulation on drives not extended by dead ball penalties.

We were on the field even longer aided by more dead ball penalties.

I would have been fine, not thrilled, by 17 points over 9 drives. Would have likely been enough even with the current state of our offense.
They were pushing our FBS Dline backwards on every snap.

He was 10-12 the first two years and 1-7 the third when he got fired. The guy Tech should have hired was Steve Logan, who actually created and ran his offense at ECU.

Excellent memory there.

Lewis’s record at ECU said he was a great coach (and he got “coach of the year”), but he wasn’t a great hire. I was in grad school then. You could see he was ruining the team. His players hated him, and worse yet, they didn’t respect him. His record doesn’t really tell the story, even though it was substandard his first two years. Steve Logan would have probably been a good hire https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Logan_(American_football)?wprov=sfti1. I think Fridge would have taken the Head Coach job and would have been a fantastic hire (except he would have needed recruiting coaches—not really his thing).

It’s good of Dabo so say “that’s not so bad of a loss”. I don’t agree, but hats off to the man.

As for me, I’m looking forward to Temple. It’ll be a tough test for us. I’m kinda done with The Citadel, but I realize we’re gonna keep kicking that around for a while.

Dabo is a class act. He does realize, as does sa(t)an (not a class act), that getting a team up for a game like this is difficult. We all know that it is NOT a myth that people did not like playing against the 3O system we ran.

Problem I have is that CGC and the coaches should have been able to "regroup" and get the player's attention at halftime, but I saw no real evidence that they did, except the fact that we did not have any more dumb penalties. Although, we did have some bad play calling and player substitutions in my opinion.

Disagree with "every snap", but I doubt you meant it literally.

My prior post was in response to our preparation for the scheme. I was speaking to effectiveness of the defense as a whole, not just DL, and measuring based on points per drive.

We would have yielded 17 points in 9 drives if we took care of the things that were 100% within our control, with a dead ball and without the clock running. If our DL was being pushed back, so be it.

That's still nearly 2pts/dr to an FCS team

Add a coach career extender and he is 12-12 in first 2 years!
About what have had in last few years.

Was he barely winning his easy games and screwing up in the defeats?

I will look at refernce to see schudule etc.

I understand. Looks a lot better than when including the additional 7 points. Not good, but good enough to win Saturday, imo.

I know I risk getting my post deleted disagreeing with you, but "better" does not support an argument in favor of "good enough."

I think 24 pts should be good enough to beat an FCS team. That's not an argument in support of how poorly we played on offense.

I hope you respect that I didn't use the L word. No @kg01 not that L word.

I obviously agree with you, but I was curious about it. Sadly, most of the websites completely disregard FCS games. I decided to use https://api.collegefootballdata.com to pull all the drives for 2019 where a team was playing an FCS opponent. The average ppd was 1.07. For 2018 it was 1.16 and 1.03 for 2017. For reference, the average ppd for offense this year is 3.25

I must say, defense ppd against FCS is MUCH lower than I thought it would be. If anyone is interested, here is the (awful) code I used to get this data: https://jsbin.com/zoqufiliyo/1/edit?js,output
I am currently installing https://github.com/rlindholm/CFBScrapy so I can do this in a much cleaner way in the future.

They were protecting their knees, trying to avoid the dirty, career ending chop blocks that every team that runs the triple option system uses. It should be outlawed!

;)

haha. I will say that I now know why we frustrated everyone the last decade. That was just so frustrating to watch, defensively. Now I know why my mutt parents would always be more worried/frustrated about COFH than I would be confident.
