The University System of Georgia (USG) is consulting constantly with the Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH) and the Governor’s Coronavirus Task Force.

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp today announced state agencies, school systems and local communities have been given the flexibility to implement closures.

Effective Monday, March 16, 2020, all 26 USG institutions will temporarily suspend instruction for two weeks to allow time for USG institutions to test their business continuity plans and online instruction modules and for state officials to continue to assess the current situation regarding coronavirus (COVID-19) in Georgia.

Students who are currently on spring break are strongly encouraged not to return to campus. Students on campus are asked to depart campus by close of business Friday, March 13, 2020, and to remain away from campus until March 29, 2020. At this time, students are not being asked to move out of their dorms for the remainder of the semester. All institutions are being asked to work with students who are unable to leave campus.

We take very seriously the responsibility to make prudent and well-informed choices for the well-being of our campus communities and the public. We continue to prepare for all scenarios in this rapidly evolving situation. All USG institutions have plans to ensure academic continuity as operations are impacted.

You’re never going to shut the disease down, but let’s be rational about the illness. The world is in panic mode with everything being shut down. If you are older and/or have a compromised immune system, then stay home and take precautions. The rest of us need to carry on with our lives. We have placed the economy into a global recession due to our reactions, not due to the virus itself.

I will say that if I owned an independent lab and could test for Covid-19, I would, FDA/CDC be damned. They would have to come shut me down.

Do you support a pharmaceutical company selling drugs labeled as curing coronavirus without FDA approval? If you were an insurance company, would you pay for lawsuits against a lab that conducted non FDA approved tests if those tests ended up being faulty and causing harm?

I'm not sure why the CDC didn't want to use the WHO tests. However the FDA has prevented a lot of false and/or marginal tests and treatments from causing harm to people, all while the level of health care in the U.S. is extremely good. EDIT: I am referring to historical actions, not about things related to this virus.

If we want faster responses to potential pandemics, then we need to have lower standards for testing and protection from lawsuits for companies who manufacture or conduct testing.

@jaymboller: Coronavirus report from my WI friend

Lol. Hadn’t noticed any shortages in the booze section but I have been making it a point to look at cleaners, water, toilet paper, etc and there are no shortages at any of the locations from Milwaukee to Madison. The Costco’s in Los Angeles are apparently out of all cleaners, toilet paper, water, etc.

People are weird.

This is the interesting part about all major upturns and downturns I’ve seen in my life. They are all highly emotional, self fulfilling prophecies. That’s why so many people have been railing on the media. You can tell when people buy 3 months of toilet paper that the psychological damage is being done.

You used to everyone able to invest based on sound financial metrics. Now that’s only a piece and more often than not you have to weigh how other people are going to think and act.

My brother-in-law lives in Sun City Arizona & he said Costco was out of paper products...toilet, towels, napkins. I just wish people would educate themselves because this virus doesn't impact your gut!

Obviously nobody knows what to believe when it comes out of China, but I read that Chinese officials are claiming that the spread of the virus has leveled out and is no longer a crisis. I imagine, if true, that that will be the case everywhere else in the world also, but when ???

Interesting that McConnell has cancelled the Senate leave, but Pelosi says in a very arrogant and argumentative tone that she is not going to "hang around" for 48 hours waiting for the Republicans to work out the language on the proposed House Coronavirus bill. I guess that shows who is really interested in getting things done and serving the needs of the country.

The governor of Georgia just basically said: Elderly people should stay inside and their family should get food and medicines for them. That the state isn't making any mandates, but that local school districts should make their own decisions about whether to close for the next two weeks or not. (Seems like playing hardball)
CDC issued those same guidelines on Monday. I finished my emergency kit wednesday and things weren't that bad in a small town of 3000. Plenty of TP,wipes.lysol. Hand San was gone but lots of IPA(70%) . Funny thing was that there were people there from a neighboring town of 30,000 who said None off those things were available in the larger town.

Dems are playing politics with this. The House bill literally has pork for abortions in it. The Covid-19 bill should be only about Covid-19. It is disgusting what the House Dems have done here.

I doubt any other country is going to do military enforced neighborhood and city quarantines.

I have a question for those on here who are still in the workforce (no slight to you @Supersizethatorder-mutt). What is your company policy as far as sick leave & COVID-19?

One of my girlfriends (I like to keep 2-3) works at American Family Insurance in Madison and they have to use PTO if they contract the virus. It’s all so new I don’t think official policies have been examined yet.
My company based out of Milwaukee is very small and we don’t have an official response at this time.
