Larry Brown is 10 years older than Roy.

There's that too.

I know the "in the family" angle will be a large focus, but I feel like you're UNC and have a legit shot at any coach you want. I'm ready for some crazy rumors. Pry Jay Wright away from Nova, Holtmann from Ohio State, Scott Drew, Bennett.... hell make Indiana fans explode by pursuing Brad Stevens.

Edit: I like the Mark Few call too

I will miss Roy. My favorite story of him is from when Few first took the Zaga job there was some sort of Nike event in NYC (I believe) where all the prominent coaches in the country were there with their wives. Few was brand new, he was a nobody at the time. He and his wife felt super awkward, shy, out of place, and almost left because they felt so uncomfortable. They were surrounded by HOF’ers and their wives. The story goes Coach Boeheim, Coach K, among others, weren’t exactly taking an interest in this couple over there in the corner who nobody knew. Roy and his wife, sensing how unbelievably out of place and embarrassed the Fews felt, went over and broke the ice. They continued to eat dinner at their table, have drinks, great conversation, etc the remainder of the evening. With the Williams now mingling with the Fews then the other coaches at the event all eventually started to trickle over and talk to and spend time with the couple. Few and Williams are still great friends to this day, and their wives are as well. Awesome story. Roy is a really good man, but he can be hated on the court at times.

There was no way UNC would fire Roy. People are disappointed with the way the last two seasons ended. I am sure they met with him to talk about his legacy and how UNC wanted him to be seen as a success at his alma mater. He is much loved by the people who matter most.

It reminds me of the end of Cremins' time at GT.

FWIW, my probably totally off base predictions
With Roy going this year
Boeheim and Larranaga go after next season.
K gone within 2-3 yrs.
Hamilton coaches at least 5 yrs longer. He seems like he is 72 going on 52.

This story is part of the reason why I think UNC would be smart to call Few. As you said he and Roy are good friends. That may make it a little more likely he would be willing to entertain UNC seriously.

Few had never been a head coach before taking over at Gonzaga. It would be a huge change for him at UNC. The culture is very different than what he enjoys at a private Jesuit school.

They certainly will keep it in the tar heel family tree. I can't imagine anyone that isn't a former heel even being considered. Whoever takes it will be on an immediate hot seat following Roy if they don't win ACC championships and go deep into the NCAAT. The last two years have been humbling.
Oh, pshaw. I’m sure Carolina fans are immensely proud of all the academic achievements by their ball-players, regardless of whether or not they’ve been successful on the court...

I am not sure the "UNC Family" angle is going to be as strong as some seem to think. First the Dean/Roy coaching tree is not what you would hope for a job like UNC. Some decent candidates but no one blows you away. Second, Bubba Cunningham doesn't have long UNC roots like Baddeur did the last time they were going through the hiring process.

I think Few thinks about it. Brad Stevens too, but he’s employable in the NBA for the foreseeable future.
If Few took UNC, it’d be a seismic shift from an all west of the Mississippi final 4 to pull the best coach from this year’s best team east.
I don’t see Bennett. If you want a system coach, why not go for Moser. His big drawback is recruiting, and I think they could fix that; heck, steal Carlton Young for his staff.
From the Big10, I think Holtman from Ohio State, Underwood at Illinois, and Painter at Purdue make sense.
I’d think Scott Drew would probably take it too.

Hamilton has a contract through the 2024-25 season. I doubt they will let him stay until the end of that season without an extension.
I agree 100% about Boeheim and Larranaga.
If Duke does not bubble back up to the top next season I expect K to retire then. Two off years is about how much the fanbase will accept at a program like Duke or UNC.

I like Wright, Stevens & Few, they should all get a call. Also, they run clean programs.

If uncheats wants to stick with their cheating ways like fake classes, then Drew would be an ideal candidate.

Out of curiosity, because who doesn't like to read a good story about friendship, I looked this up. Their friendship only gets better over the years with a now legendary midnight gambling run:

That’s the MS gambling trip story, correct? Where they put the players to bed at 9 and all the coaches went to the casino until 3am the night before the game I believe. 😂 Love that one as well, that was very recent if I recall. I didn’t click the link but that’s another good story in their history.
