He was done playing college ball a few years before our Final 4 run. We recruited him & Travis Spivey and that didn't work out so great for us.
Why in the hell did I think that he was on that team?
Considering what happened at his first school Notre Dame it may not have gone well if he had originally chosen Tech.

The two biggest issues facing Syracuse right now, imo
1) Coaching Carousel / Replacing Hopkins... Hop's replacement will likely not be the same caliber, especially given Autry was promoted to Associate HC. Does Boeheim grab Allen Griffin back from Dayton, promote from within, or go back to outside hire? Might depend on Archie Miller's next step.
2) 2 more years of scholarship and recruiting restrictions. Injury bug + lack of schollies + off court stuff was a bad mix this year. Thomas Bryant, Kevin Huerter, etc could have changed the course of this season, sigh.

I'm happy for Hop. While he was coach in waiting, there was ultimately no date ever given to him until Boeheim's retirement was forced by the previous administration. Can argue whether that was warranted or not. In any case Boeheim probably wants to leave on his terms, and now with a new AD/admin he can.

I wonder if young players still see Syracuse and Boeheim the same as they did 2-3 years ago. Could they be looking at several of years of mediocre classes.

It's a fair question. While the 2016 class included 5* Battle, 4* Thompson and 4* Moyer (redshirted), who knows how much was due to Hop's planned succession vs. something else. 2017 has been a bust by Syracuse standards even with Hop in the fold... several misses, though some have nothing to do with the coaches' ability to recruit.

Hop was unquestionably Syracuse's best recruiter. And he's seen as a solid coach otherwise... he was an assistant for USA basketball with Boeheim and K. There's a reason he earned one of the best jobs ever for someone who's never been a HC, better than any of K's assistants. He was also a former Syracuse player. Nearly impossible to replace someone with those credentials.

I hope he does big things at UW. He's also from the west coast. Rumor is his staff will include taking Jason Hart from Enfield at USC. Hart is also a west coast guy and former Syracuse player.
