I know he’s just trying to sell the program, but it’s some pretty interesting revisionist history when he tells Rome about how we were a top 10 team competing for ACC championships in the late 90’s, as if there’s such a big contrast between our success under O’Leary and Johnson. I was a student in the late 90’s and I recall 1 top 10 finish, and 1 tie with FSU for the ACC, and FSU beat us that year (as they did every year). It’s pretty striking how similar the 2 eras really were—terrible defenses, great OCs who utilized the option effectively. O’Leary’s greater success rate against uga teams that were no where near as good as the current uga teams gives him an edge in the memory of Tech fans.

I agree about him saying we were perennially top 10...made me cringe a bit...but that just what marketers/salespeople do from time to time.

PJ's gone.

We had 5 consecutive AP top 25 finishes under O'Leary. Maybe not top 10, but we were in the national conversation and usually behind only FSU in the ACC. FSU was a top 5 program at the time.

So yes, there is a big contrast in success. But as Long for Dodd said, Johnson is gone so I won't go into further detail. It's a new day. I wish people would quit bringing up Johnson.

Getting back into the Top 25 on a consistent basis is exactly the first goal we should have as a program. Keep in mind, Tech hasn't been ranked since week 3 of 2015.

Top 25 means consistent 9 to 10 win seasons. Accomplish that, and with the playoff the ball just might bounce your way a few times that year and you get in.

I think people have forgotten how good we were before O’Leary left, even with the issues after Fridge went back to MD. We haven’t been that consistently relevant since.

Geoff Collins is very savvy with the Sports and Social Media and i think that will reap dividends for Georgia Tech in the long term.
He handles it so effortlessly.

Gives great interview such that interviewer can look like he's doing a good job.
Often has a NUGGET to add.

NUGGET 1
MARCH 30 PRACTICE - Invite Letters from coach Collins going to all lettermen to come and WATCH and Meet our players. (Said he really wants to bridge all the eras of gt football by INTENTIONALLY getting people from each era on staff )
NUGGET 2
AT 3/30 practice
They will see our high intensity practice where no one is standing around.

If I lived closer I would come

I was actually a bit surprised we weren't ranked at the end of the year in 2016. We finished 9-4, with wins in 6 of the last 7 games including over two SEC teams. That year, 7 team made it in the final top 25 rankings with the same or a worse record. Probably had more to do with 2015 than anything else. On the flip side, we stayed ranked in the top 25 for 4 weeks in 2015, despite winning 3 games all year! lol. So much of those rankings are a total crap shoot. They do reflect on national perception though.

I think we were better than your memory suggests. Even if we weren't top 10 every single week from 1998-2001 we had at least one week in the top 10 3 of those 4 years. 2 out of 3 while Geoff was on campus with the bad year only getting to 15th. And for good measure got to 13th the year he came back in 2006.

I agree we enjoyed our most consistent success under O’Leary. Although mid season rankings reflect perception more than results. I also think he was going against overall weaker competition. If you look at beating top 10 teams, without looking it up I would guess Johnson would be the leader on that stat. Don’t get me wrong, I’m an O’Leary fan too. I just don’t believe the difference between the 2 is that big.

CGC jumping in to add a few selling points for all the potential SA"s....locker room, adidas, and of course - Waffle House. If GT is not getting paid by Waffle House, I think we're getting robbed. Significant promotional value being generated....
