Clemson didn't carry any torch for me.

Even though I was rooting for them to win, their loss doesn't hurt. Any GT loss hurts exponentially more than any ACC non-con loss and that includes the Natty. I don't get the SEC, SEC, SEC chant so I certainly don't take any pride in FSU or Clemson or any other conference mate winning a championship.

Is there any residual bump to our recruiting with an ACC Championship sitting on the iron throne? Maybe. Maybe a teeny tiny bit, but it's negligible. It probably hurts us more than helps us because now any rare recruit that's sitting on the fence with us and them (yeah I know, I said rare) is more inclined to go to them.

That said, Satan winning does hurt. The rich gets richer. The gulf that separates the upper class in college football from the rest just got a little wider and a little deeper. The beat goes on. Woo hoo!

I can tell you this, if we hope to compete with Clemson, we better roll up our sleeves and get to work. They have a young team, a solid program and a lot less restrictions to success than we have. I've always taken pride in how competitive we have been with Clemson and we can continue to do that but we can not have another year like last year or they will bury us for the next decade or so.

I want this discussion about conference bannerism, not a GT success prospectus, there's plenty of other threads about that.

I didn't see much difference between the two teams; Bammer won on a special teams play, but long returns are mainly a matter of luck. I couldn't root for either team and I agree with the Cheese about not seeing the point of all this "conference bragging rights" crap. Still, as a Tech fan of very long standing, I have one constant in my universe:

I hate Alabama.

I hate everything about Alabama.

I hate everyone associated with the Alabama "program".

As to Clempson: as I keep saying, I think we will be competitive with them next year. Given the O getting back to snuff - and it will - the solution is easy. The O scores 30 points a game, the D gives up 29. Problem solved. We might not win in Atlanta next year, but I won't be at all surprised if we do.

I don't carry any conference flag. As far as I am concerned the ACC is a basketball confernece and we are a football school. Those clowns that chant SEC, SEC,SEC should actually be chanting, Alabama, Alabama, Alabama, that's really what they are hiding theri false pride behind. The ACC is all about Tobacco Road, I wish we could dissassoicate ourselves and not lose the money.

There are 14 teams in the ACC. 4 are tobacco road and 10 are not. Seems more logical for the 10 to band together and change the power structure of the conference.

I actively rooted for Clemson because I have family members who went there, but in general the only reason I root for other ACC teams is if they're playing an SEC school, and only in that circumstance because they care. The only other interest I have is in my own team, and to the extent that out of conference performance reflects on my team, I do care. I actively root against Virginia Tech and NC State in the ACC, because their fans have been a$$holes at games. I've been to a game at every other school in the conference except BC, Pitt, and Syracuse and had excellent times at all. That impacts my willingness to root for another team, too.

The (competitively) alarming thing is that Clemson was supposed to be a year away and '16 was supposed to be the NC challenge year. It is still a very young team with more 4 and 5-stars committed. (I suspect that after this game Clemson might pick off a couple of more before signing day.) And, though all in defeat is an excuse, their weakness -- special teams -- ate them alive last night. But: pretty clearly Alabama had spent reams of hours on film study and knew every tendency and every weakness, from passing areas to pooch kick area, to collapsing lanes on kickoffs. I suppose that is how one gets to be NC.

Or your players make more plays and less mistakes like most games. The result of the game was more that than coaching/prep, imo. Even on the pooch kick, which I'll give you as good prep, it took a perfect kick and cover. The kick return td was complete fail in maintaining lane and fail in kicking depth. The long play on the swing pass down the sideline was on a missed tackle. Two huge blown coverages on defense lead to tds. The blocked kick......

And that's just mistakes by Clem. Bammer made plays at crucial times that sealed to deal, too. That qb scramble at the end of the game that put them in position to score their final td was huge.

I can't stand this whole rooting for a conference thing. I refuse to be party to it.

I had a uga coworker this morning trash talking the ACC after last nights victory. I pointed out that Bama beat uga by 28 points, which was its largest margin of victory against a power 5 opponent, and asked how Bama winning made uga better?

*crickets*

Then, for fun, I pointed out that a 3-9 GT team did something this year that uga hasn't done in a long time: beat a top-10 opponent.

He was right back to SEC!SEC!SEC! after that.

I agree with the last part for sure, Cheese. sa(t)an has created an unlevel playing field for the rest of the teams. I am a little enthused by Jim Harbaugh, Dabo, Urban, etc. starting to recruit at a very high level which can hopefully dilute the talent more. If sa(t)an keeps recruiting the best DL and OL, and stocking them 3-4 deep, this is going to remain boring every year....It is not that sa(t)an is the only one getting mostly 4 and 5 star guys, but he gets the cream de la cream, and he gets them in class after class after class, creating a depth of talent that is hard to overcome. His #1 recruiting angle is his "freeway to the NFL", which includes the following 2 selling points:

  • If you play here, you will go against NFL caliber players in practice; in fact, you will probably practice against more talent than you will be up against on Saturdays
  • AND, this one is HUGE for 4 and 5 star guys that only care about NFL - your number of snaps, due to our depth, will be greatly less at Bammer than anywhere else, increasing your chances of getting through your 3 required years unscathed and injury-free.

I have always, in the post-season, rooted for any ACC team against anybody else, though I almost gag on UNC and Duke, the former because of its hypocrisy and because it has cheapened and devalued the diplomas of every graduate of what was once a standard bearer of a school, and Duke because, well, Duke is just smug, I was happy with the conference performance post-season after 2014 season, not so happy this season. But it do think the conference gets some bounce with a team playing for the NC.

TV contracts dictate conference team financial health...which is why ND is even sniffing at the ACC....a NC would have caused great consternation in SEC land, rats, oh well....

I am just happy that it was a really entertaining game. Personally, I don't think the best team won. Both were very good teams mind you, but Clemson lost because of some critical mistakes. They controlled the game, but lost it because of coverage busts, KO returns and the like. Bammer scored half their points because Clemson chose not to cover somebody, not because they couldn't. Clemson racked up 31 first downs and 550 yards of offense against a team that didn't make any GLARING errors. Bammer simply couldn't contain Clemson. I thought both DLs were really good, but the less mobile QB got chewed up while the other escaped a good bit. If you ask the teams, I would think the tiggers would say they played poorly and gave it away, while bammer would say they feel fortunate.
