I would not count Virginia in that group. The formerly Redskins, now Commanders 100% dominate the Market in Northern Virginia where the largest concentration of the State's population lives. This whole region is a Pro Sports area and the Commanders dominate about 90% of the air / print time. The Nationals, Capitals and Wizards barely move the needle as far as interest goes. For football, VT is a very very distant second and UVA is simply an after thought!

Below is an article containing some of the recent comments from the Conference Commissioners concerning possible adjustments to the current CFP format. The 10 Commissioners and ND will meet on Sunday. CFP Management Committee (11 Presidents) will also meet on Sunday.

I show Commissioner Phillips' comments below. Big 12 Commissioner Yormark has a similar position supporting the current format. B1G Commissioner and SEC Commissioner support seeding based on the CFP committee rankings. This is worth the 4-minute read. According to the article, any changes would likely be in 2026 season.

"ACC commissioner Jim Phillips referred to similar professional playoff formats that uses an automatic bye structure for teams that win divisions or conferences, such as the NFL. He cited one of the most recent regular season games in which the Detroit Lions played the Minnesota Vikings. The winner, Detroit, won the NFC North, received the No. 1 seed and a first-round bye in the NFC playoffs. Minnesota dropped to the wild-card spot and had to travel for a first-round game, which it lost to the Los Angeles Rams."

“The NFL, which we believe is the highest level of football in our world, has a system that rewards divisional champions,” Phillips said. “You see it in Major League Baseball, too. It’s not as if this system is so foreign. This shouldn’t be used as a convenient rationale. It deserves a review, and we should talk about how it went. But it’s not some exotic structure.”

From the author: As reported by Yahoo Sports on Dec. 10, the Big Ten and SEC are poised to at least introduce a discussion about seeding the field based on the alignment of the rankings and eliminate the bye rule.

The CFP format won't change for 2025. Sadly the SEC and B1G will get their way in 2026 and beyond which will suck for college football but be beneficial for the SEC and B1G!

I know current format was a 2-year deal. I have wondered what is "in play" for tweaking within the current format. Looks like seeding could be....

I'm guessing what cannot be changed is number of teams & auto-bid criteria.

Some comments from ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips concerning a possible change in the format of the ACC Championship. These comments came after the CFP meetings today in Atlanta. I have copied three paragraphs from Andrea Adelson's article below.

"Phillips said the ACC could consider giving its regular season champion a bye and have the teams that finish second or third in the league standings play in the ACC championship game."

"He said another possibility is having the top 4 teams play on the final weekend of the regular season: first place versus fourth place, and second place vs. third place, with the winners playing the following weekend in the ACC championship game."

"Phillips said he will have conversations with league head coaches on a conference call next week to get their feedback on the plan -- specifically pointing to comments SMU coach Rhett Lashlee made leading up to the game in which he indicated the Mustangs might be better off not playing to protect its spot in the field."

I hate those ideas!

The commissioner of the league saying this publicly with a straight face is troubling.

ETA.. I just assume his face was straight when he said it.
ACC clowns itself again. 2-12 in bowls, went 1-4 during rivalry weekend leading into the bowls and playoffs. Our Commisioner decides the way to get a 2nd ACC Team in the playoffs is to have ACC #1 avoid a Championship Game. Damn dude, the way to get teams into the playoffs is to win the damn games. Stop being everyone's ***** and start competing.

I think with reflection, most of us can see some of that in at least a few of our posts.

I only used that post to respond to because I know he has me blocked and wouldn't think I was necessarily attacking him (which I really wasn't). I was in a contrarian mood and the bourbon loosened my fingers. It was more a general statement about all of us internet warriors.

No need to explain... but I appreciate it. My response was meant to be humorous.

The clown quotient on here is a non-zero number.

I give Phillips credit for considering unconventional ideas to overcome the SEC/B10’s polling advantages and keep the ACC relevant in the CFP. Consider that SMU made the CFP by the skin of their teeth, despite being the ACC’s regular-season champs. Had Clemson beaten SMU in the ACC Championship by just a few points more, the ACC would have been a one-bid league.

For those that say ACC teams should simply “just win the games”, that’s the point of this proposal – reward teams that win their games but due to polling bias favoring blue-bloods, don’t make the playoffs. This bias arguably kept FSU out of the 2023 CFP and nearly kept out SMU this year. Whether either of these teams deserved to be in the playoffs is another discussion.
