If it's deemed safe I'll come over and shake your hand as usual.
This got me thinking. Even if everything is deemed safe, I’d have to think all the pregame stuff like tailgate parties could be very very small or non existent.... I know some, including myself will say “I’m doing this or going there” but when it comes time, might be very hesitant. I’m all in for an August 1 kickoff and play til mid October if the virus is coming back late fall. Play 9 games, get a season in and generate revenue and give the fans some normalcy.

A 7-4 season without playing UGAG wouldn't be that bad;)

Anything less than 4 wins this year is not a good sign. We have a very good class coming in and we should expect them to contribute right away.

Contribute and win are two entirely different things. There is a great deal of difference in winning 3-4 games this year and looking at least competent in the losses vs. last year when often we looked overwhelmed from the start. It's going to take some time to build the depth we need to win routinely again.

That's a pretty easy one to smash the Over on. If you can get on it, I would, probably won't stay there for long.

I think some of you are crazy. Yes, we stunk it up on offense last year. We couldn’t block and we sure as heck couldn’t pass until the second half of the season and even that was sporadic. And we still won 3 games! We lost just about no one of consequence during this off season. We lost a lot last off season including the death of Adams and then we lost Lee early in the year and Ezzard and Clayton weren’t deemed eligible. Our kickers had to be the worst in the country.

With our additions (even the young freshman), the loss of no one, and other teams losing some talent we will be just fine. Our QB play can’t be any worse. Our blocking can’t get any worse. Our kicking game can’t get any worse. If we are just average we’ll win several games in the ACC. And if we find a QB who has some ability to see the field we’ll take a huge step forward. Our RB’s M.Carter/and WR’s are the best group we’ve had in years and our OLine can’t be any worse. Last year was a cluster and it started in the spring with the death of Adams and with injury after injury and substandard play at the QB position and we hit the bottom. But, a redshirt QB and a true freshman WR gave us some foreshadowing. I can’t wait. And if you don’t think Mason, Griffin, and Gibbs won’t give DC’s nightmares you are nuts. All 3 will play in the NFL. And Brown is an NFL player as well.
I agree just look at the Roster in year 2 with all the transfers able to play and and GCG recruits in for depth!

2020 Projected Offense - Spread Pro Style

This is the football board, not the basketball board.

Very few kids are physically where they need to be when they arrive on campus. But more importantly, the schemes are so much more complex in FBS football than in HS. The assignments have to become second nature--react, not think--to play at the speed that is required. That comes through time and repetition. Yes, you can get a few snaps at some positions like RB, but kids don't typically get to full speed on the learning curve until their third year in the program. There are exceptions, but those are few.

A lot of people on this board do not understand the complexity of modern FBS football. They seem to think it's like their HS days, or even sandlot.

But I agree--I believe we will win more than 4 games. Vast improvement on the OL and a year in the new schemes will make a big difference. Last year we lost 8 starters on D plus Adams. This year we have almost everyone back. The experience level far exceeds where we were last year.

If we get to play.

I fully understand that if we had a team that was competing for 9-10 win seasons it would be off base to expect that. But lets be honest we were a bad football team last year. I mean bad. I think that even with the lack of experience and speed and strength these new guys will contribute very quickly.

There are plenty of examples of true freshmen contributing across the country every year. Its not that unheard of. Take a look at our best WR from last year as an example. It's not unreasonable to think that some members of a good recruiting class should be able to contribute immediately on a team that needs a lot of help.

True. But generally, there are only one or two true freshmen on any given team contributing in a meaningful way. They are by far the exception to the rule. My issue is not that we don't have quality freshmen coming in, (we do), but that we have to rely on them not only to contribute immediately, but to contribute beyond what most true freshmen historically are able to do. Then, we also need them to be better in year one than their opponents in years 2-5. That's a tall order and a LOT to bank on. It's why I said in my post above that if we were to win more than 4 games, it would be because we have the lucky break of having most of our "winnable" games in the second half of the season.

Also, loss of spring practice negates any advantages we had with both our QBs coming in as EE's.

I like our chances to win 5-6 games, but I really think we will be a 3-4 win team this year.

Just wanted to point out that one of our 3 wins last season was arguably because we didn't have the worst kicker in the country...

It’s not just we have, it’s what others have lost. We lost no one while others lost key personnel.

In today’s game of college football, freshmen are every bit as valuable as seniors. I know many will get riled up over that but today’s game isn’t a brute force game with 23 year olds over powering 18 year olds. Today’s college football is a finesse sport played in space. Hence, Brown showed out because he has the skill whether he’s 19 or 22. And who do you want taking a swing pass on 2nd and 3 next year? I’ll take Gibbs. Give me speed in space all day regardless of age. I think GT has a very balanced roster right now on both sides of the ball and a lot of guys were thrown into the fire last year. I’m not expecting anything in 2020 because of the recruiting hole we were in, but Collins has worked this roster masterfully with high end transfers and his first recruiting class. I’m not scared at all to face the mediocrity of the ACC. And as far as the OOC scheduling getter tougher, I love it. With Collins recruiting we’ll be on a level playing field with most of those teams. Sure Clemson and UGA are elite, but the day is coming where we’ll out talent most of the ACC.

We return more starters than almost any team in the country. We also return a lot of players that were injured most of the year. It is a statistical fact that teams that make the biggest jump in wins year-over-year are typically the ones that return the most starters. That is what gives me optimism for making a bowl game next year.

Let's say hypothetically we improve from 'pretty damn bad' to 'mediocre'.

Ok.

12 games
  • (2) - Clemson and Georgia are winning 9 times out of 10 against mediocre
  • (1) - Let's call the FCS game a win (don't go there)
  • (9) - That leaves 9 games as toss-up. Odds would say we win 4.5.
That gets us to 5.5 wins.

I'm generously throwing ND in the last category. If you put them in the first group, we're back to 4.5 wins.

How big is the leap for us to become mediocre, with half of our practices disintegrating between year 1 and year 2?

Offense - improvement will be determined by OL and QB. The end. Not Gibbs, Brown, or any other speed we put out there. Major question marks at the positions that matter.

Defense - improvement will be determined by DL, the LB. Major question marks at the positions that matter. Will not be answered by true frosh.

Special Teams - improvement will be determined by K. Major question mark at the position that matters.

Nothing has been proven on the field at the positions that matter. Lots of hopes, dreams, and optimism. Some of those questions marks will be answered in our favor. There is potential there. Expecting all to be answered this year, without spring practice, is unrealistic, imo.
