Braves Offseason

It’s hard to figure out what’s going on. They’ve shed a good bit of payroll, enough to add a major player, but haven’t pulled off any moves to do so. Is AA sticking to his guns and not overpaying in a trade, or is he just flat out getting rejected? Lots of handwringing going on right now, and for good reason.
Rumor has it that Ozuna may not be in ATL next year. Would that open a spot for Acuna at DH? Might that be why the Braves are collecting OF when they should be replacing Fried?

AA went with this strategy last year with starting pitching and it didn't work. Why would he dip into the well twice on this?

Wait, I'd say the strategy on starters worked quite well. Even with Strider going down, starting pitching was rarely the issue in the regular season.

To me, the issue is they can't bank on it happening again. It seems they're trying to roll the dice again and aren't acknowledging how lucky they got this past year.

A second issue is, philosophically, they focus only on the regular season and view any postseason success as icing on the cake.

If they lose it's, "oh well, things just didn't break our way".

If they win it's, "great, things just broke our way."

Well I know it's a crapshoot of sorts, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't build the team to make it more likely that things break your way.

I feel like they’re addressing this with the new hitting coach. Banging a lot of HR’s can rack up wins in a long season, but in the postseason, when you’re facing the best pitchers in a short series, it doesn’t work - unless multiple guys get hot as in 2021 (Freeman, Soler, Rosario, etc).

Yeah but what about the pitching? They're losing guys and don't appear to be replacing them.then.

Plus they're banking on another fully healthy year for Sale and no sophomore slumps for Swellenbach or Lopez and for Strider to come back fully. They're also counting on replacing Morton's innings.

Corbin Burnes to AZ, 6yrs $210mil.

Not that I expected the Braves there, just posting as a reference point.

Maybe Braves get Eovaldi?

There is no instance the sample universe that includes AA bidding that much for a pitcher. None.

Yeah, we're dumpster divers. I still say we shld make a play for that guy who flamed out in AZ last year. I suspect he's a guy that'll flourish with a scenery change.

Montgomery? I would like to get him or Sonny Gray in a trade. Jack Flaherty is also still out there. And we desperately need another outfielder.

Yup, Montgomery. With the rumors that AZ may be willing to eat some of his salary, I bet AA is really licking his chops.

Creeping Oh Yeah GIF by Domino’s UK and ROI

Seems an extra OF shld be attainable. And where are the rumors Ozuna may not be back? Saw that posted here, iirc.

I doubt the Braves re-sign Ozuna after this year. It would be nice to use the DH for Acuna after this year to get him off his feet more often. And also for the other regulars that play everyday because Snitker refuses to give guys rest.

The only thing AA really loves is letting go of franchise players and hiring part-time leftover players. Except for Sale. Sale made AA look like a genius again.

Not really Braves related, but one of the most fascinating things of the offseason to me is watching Scott Boras and his 2nd tier free agents overvalue themselves and get left out in the cold. Alex Bregman is this year's case. No reason in the world he shouldn't be back with the Astros, but because Boras is whispering in his ear, now the Astros have made other moves to get themselves covered and Bregman most certainly will not be an Astro in 2025. I think teams are over this waiting game that Boras loves to employ and instead opt to fill the hole in other ways. Teams don't mind it with the top tier guys, but teams don't have patience with these 2nd tier guys. It's always interesting to see what happens when the music stops and who is left searching for a chair.

It happens every year now doesn't it? These guys better learn. Isn't Alonso going through the same thing? Only saving grace for him may be the Mets think overspending cures everything.

Yeah, you're right. For some reason I didn't think Boras represented Alonso. Rumor has it that the Braves and specifically AA HATES dealing with him and almost never signs or trades for one of his clients because of their difference in free agency philosophy.

I don't even think its a rumor. IIUC, the Braves organization swore off dealing with any of his players even before AA's tenure. I think it's a mutual hatred.
