Cover them? Yes. But unfortunately not enough for us to not derail your thread. We did make it all the way to the first reply though.
Hah, it's totally ok. In fairness, those discussions are more pertinent than possible bowl destination and opponent with a few weeks to go. Just thought it'd be more fun to discuss/daydream about beating the brakes off Kiffin v2, or whatever. Just something new.

I do not like the current bowl system. The reality is that bowls exist to provide programming content. Unless, you are in a NYD bowl ... they are only for selling advertising.

If at 2-8, Tech can get into the Great American Cookie Bowl or the Black&Decker Drillmaster Bowl, they should go. I’m holding out for the Insurrection Marital Toys Bowl ... at least if we get screwed on national tv, we’ll get free condoms.

I'm not scared I plain just don't think a 2 or 3 win team needs to go to a bowl. And yes I know some will say you get extra practice but if I don't see a big difference in the way we play this week after being off 3 weeks than don't see where it would make a difference, Coaches can use the time to recruit and the players can use the time on school work and getting ready for spring practice.
Be embarrassed? No one's watching that game except us fans and them fans. Take the frikin' money and practice time. Win/Win.

With not much else to talk about re: GT football in November, may as well monitor the projections as we get closer to the finish line of the regular season.

Let's get this out of the way first.
  • Yes, bowl games might not get played.
  • Yes, we are projected to a bowl game despite what is likely a less than .500 record (see revised rules for 2020), and many will still disagree on whether a bowl invitation is fair or warranted.
Does that cover the main tangents?

As of the end of week 12, there are two projections for GT to the Gasparilla Bowl (Tampa).
  • ESPN: 1 of 2 writers puts us in the Gasparilla Bowl vs. Ole Miss. The other did not project us anywhere.
  • 247: Gasparilla Bowl vs. Memphis
If I were czar of bowl selection, I’d be attempting to schedule every non-conference rivalry game that was cancelled as a bowl game. GT-uga, Florida-FSU (or Miami), BYU-Utah, WVU-Pitt, Kentucky-Louisville, Iowa-Iowa State, even Texas A&M-Texas off the top of my head. Those would all draw better ratings than random games like Ole Miss-Tech.

See I know they are worthless but we ( Tech) would lose money playing in this bowl. But point blank I still think we would need 2 more wins other then maybe Duke I don't see another one. And Duke is not 100%.
I agree, unless Tech rides a bus during the night to reach Tampa , play the game and return afterward, we lose money. Tech can't afford any other way to go.

The extra practice time is essential
first understand the our season would end this weekend playing uga, But because of the virus we now have 3 extra weeks of practice already with 3 more 3 still to play. Even if they get called off you still have the 3 weeks of practice ( to ball kick ball and the other games CGC wants them to play)

I had forgotten how these bowl games are net $$ losers for us. Maybe I need to rethink my thinking about these bowls.

I haven't looked into the finances of bowl games this year. I don't know that accurate information is even available. I believe that in normal years, the "lose money on bowl games" is mostly tied to requirements to sell a certain number of guarantee tickets. If the team doesn't sell enough bowl tickets, the team has to pay for them. This year with limited tickets it might not be an issue for GT to sell all of their allotment. Or, the bowl games might require that each team pay for the normal guarantee even if there aren't that many tickets available.

Also, I think the ACC collects and distributes all of the money for every bowl. The ACC pays a travel allowance to every team that plays in bowl games, so in effect GT wouldn't lose money unless there is still a ticket guarantee that GT has to be responsible for. IF I am correct about the travel allowance being paid by the ACC, ticket guarantees are not in effect this year, and no other ACC team is selected to go to whatever bowl GT decided not to go to, the net effect would be less money paid to the ACC. That would reduce the pool of money that the ACC has, which would mean a smaller payout to GT, which would mean GT would lose money by not going to the bowl game.

It is my understanding that bowl money is shared by the conference and that would normally help. However, I don't think the conference is making much money this year. stech makes a good point about the extended practice time we are already getting (except for kick-ball games). A bowl game would just be another exhibition and may hurt us more than help.
Edit: Oops, I didn't see RonJohn's post.

I'll have to rethink my rethinking of my thinking. I hope we could at least break even with the travel allowance and not be responsible for tickets sales. with this year being what it is, we can certainly benefit by every day we can get out on a field to practice and play.

I really think after Thanksgiving most of the so called small bowl will decide cancel the games due to them losing money .

There is no school over Christmas break.
Except that I took an optics final home over Christmas break to see if I can answer of the questions I didn’t during the final
Luckily, a classmate called when we all got back to campus and said the prof was giving the final again because nobody could answer any of the questions
An outlier to be sure but I dang sure had school over the break. 7 questions, worked 2 weeks to answer 4 of them.

I believe what keeps the small bowl games going is television money. They hold these small bowl games in large stadiums (remember the Quick Loss Bowl) and sell very few tickets. It's entertainment for football fans during the holidays when there's not much going on. If ESPN was smart, they would build a small studio type stadium in Bristol, Connecticut and just have all of the small bowl games there for two weeks.

Yeah, this is why they will try to get these games played. Folks will be truly home for the holidays.

I hope the games happen. I love bowl season and don't want to watch any more old games.

Ole Miss and Memphis are my other 2 teams I follow (but don't cheer for like of course GT) - hubby grad of Ole Miss and I did grad school at Memphis. Unless we have a major turnaround in the next couple of weeks, these would not be entertaining matchups. Ole Miss would beat us by 60 points even though their D is weak - their O is for real. And Memphis is no walk in the park for us either. Both of those teams are way better than their record. Sadly, I don't see that we are better than our record.
