Bowl season, Army bootleg pass. They broke their flexbone, loaded the formation to the left, ran a receiver from the left side of the line to the flag, bootlegged right, and the receiver was completely alone:

So, at first glimpse, this is literally a play out of MY playbook.

This is what I have drawn up.

We call this:
Queen Left Counter Trap Option Right

It is a counter play off of our standard trap play, where the QB gives the ball to the fullback and he chases the pulling guard through the gut of the defense. The pulling guard hits the first DL playside of the Center (yes, including a 1 technique. If there's a 1 technique, this is essentially a dive through the backside A gap).

We will run option to strong or weak here, to strong we'll call it "Trap Option" and to weak we call it "Counter Trap Option".

The thing is, while it ends up looking almost identical to this play which has its roots in the Wing T and Veer bloodlines, what CCU is ACTUALLY running is a variant of split zone, which comes from a completely different bloodline.

This is a convergent evolution thing where Dolphins and Sharks are WAY different under the skin, but because they're trying to to the same thing, they end up LOOKING quite similar at first glance.

So while I have built this look as a counter to Trap, THEY have built this play as a counter to Split Zone.

Here is split zone:

In split zone, instead of reading the backside end with the QB, they send the H back across to kick him, and the option part tends to be the glance route from the slot receiver (z, in this diagram)

What CCU has done is taking Z and moved him into the backfield behind the QB, and they're going to option the end again, only now instead of optioning him with the A back mesh on inside zone, they're going to FAKE inside zone, and run counter option behind it.

So the differences between my play and theirs
1) The playside H back cuts across the backside of the formation, and runs a crack exchange with the WR, where the WR shows a stalk block on the CB, but abandons to go crack LB1, and H kicks out the CB.
2) No pulling guard, the OL just run regular-*** Split zone. Everything going on behind them is immaterial.


It's a fascinating play because it gives LB's a TON to look at, because at snap it could be IZ left, it could be essentially veer left, it could be old fashioned Counter Right, for LB1, LB2 and the backside end, it's an almost overwhelmingly contradictory set of keys, and what you end up with is them frozen, the Backside End running himself out of the play, and the fact that the wr misses his block doesn't even end up mattering, because the corner is so confused that he just bails and H ends up getting a double on LB1.

Interestingly, the first play on that thread is VERY similar to waht i'm breaking down from CCU. Slightly different, but when paired with the play I'm doing, it's even more confusion for the D.

Their ability to meld zone blocking with option backfield action (and vice versa) is fascinating, and changes the way I think about things.
