And no, I don't think it will kill Sims confidence. Watching the games he looks cool as a cucumber, I don't think turnovers bother Sims which is great! It is why I think he would benefit from being benched so he can watch and learn from the sidelines without the pressure on his shoulders. I don't think it would kill his confidence, I think it would help him and then he can come out and recognize certain defenses.

Well... my post was directly meant to be calling out Collins and the staff but it was moved from the football thread. So here it is again.

I am watching the LSU game and the commentators mention Ed publicly called out his defense after the last game. Saying, "They are embarrassing. I thought if we could hold teams to 21ppg we could play well knowing we would score 30. But when you score 41 and lose. Thats unacceptable and embarrassing."

This was directed at his staff and players.

Tonight his team is doing just that. Holding SC to 20ish points while the offense has scored 45. They have held SC to 33% on third down. Last 2 weeks they gave up at a 50% clip. Tonight SC gas around 340 yards while the 2 weeks prior they have up a combined 1100+ yards. 600+ and 500+.

I understand trying to support your players, but I am a FIRM believer in holding them accountable and calling them out on mistakes. Even if it needs to happen on national TV or in an interview. The narrative has to be that the mistakes will not continue or heads will roll. Thacker and the whole defense should be put on notice.

Pretty sure Ed would of physically beaten half the team if they gave up 77 to clemson. Idc if we played the 2007 New England Patriots. You don't give up 77. You especially don't play fast paced tempo offense in the 2nd half to continue to gas your defense and allow Clemson to continue to score.

Again today our defense looked lost.

I like Collins as a guy, but sometimes I wish he had a little roughneck in him to beat up on his team like Ed O.

We continue to beat ourselves. That is the sign of a bad football team. I see little to no improvement. I think at this point we just have to face it. This group simply is not very good. The coaches are either incompetent or the players are so far below the competition from a talent standpoint that we can not win without some sort of miraculous occurrence. It may be a combination of both. At this point, I would play as many people as possible in the hope of some development and try to build some future depth. I would focus on trying to implement an offense that uses as much time as possible and do everything possible to shorten the remaining games. Our defense is perhaps the worst in the country. We are a laughing stock on that side of the ball. This a huge disappointment and a stain on the legacy of GT football.

I agree about not liking the first onside kick. Though in hindsight, we weren't stopping them, so it really might have been a fine call.

Generally speaking I think the frequency of our ST fakes is hurting our odds of success. I've noticed more recently that opposing coaches have acknowledged Collins' aptitude and success with ST fakes, which also suggests to me that they're likely going to anticipate it more. Maybe I'm reading too much into game week press conferences.

Even if you do an on-side kick there, you never line up in a formation that advertises what you are doing. You line up in a regular formation and fake it. That was not as dumb as lining up for a punt of their 28 yard line with the idea of faking it though. That was just plain stupid.

You really think putting a true freshman that has started every game on the bench will help him and not kill his confidence. Just to play some one who last year admitted to not practicing as hard as it should.

Depends on how you think about 2+ TOs per game He had 2 high end TD passes today but also 2 really sloppy TOs that led to 2 easy TDs for them

It isn't just today but a pattern that has to be broken Question is how do you do that

True. But, in fairness we went under center in another game this year already. Most just forgot about it or it wasn't as important to them until we got stuffed on 4th and 1 against Clemson.

I’ll have to watch it again - I thought it was snapped early before he called for it and wasn’t ready for it. I could be wrong - God knows my wife has told me so on all kinds of things today.

Until we can stop the run we aren't beating anybody this year. BC saw that we are not stopping the run and just gashed us up front. That opened up their pasing game and when we went man coverages the QB burned us with long runs. On zone they found the TE over the middle. We should stop blitzing #6. He gets caught up in the wash and hardly ever gets into the backfield. Today we couldn't tackle for some reason. Missed a lot when had a chance to make plays. Do these guys even care? If the staff sees this as a "practice" season then so do the players.

Nah, I think he is a stud. Seriously, Sims has that "it" factor. I don't think he gets shaken or bothered, so his confidence wouldn't take a hit, truly he is the guy of the future. But I do think he'd benefit from sitting out to read defenses and notice certain looks, etc.

Now, if we had a guy on the sidelines to talk with Sims and the offense, and show them what went wrong and what not, then no I don't think we sit Sims, but because Patenaude is up in the box he can't do that with Sims and the guys on the sideline so the best option now would be to put in Graham.

I can't say for certain that he wasn't ready, but I watched it in slow motion and: His facemask was directly facing the center, his arms made a jerk just before the snap, every offensive player reacted to the snap, and he was moving his body and arms to line up with the mesh. Based on that, I don't think it was early.

Yea, they are up under multimedia on RR game recap. Collins usual - “we have to get better every second of every day.” I know he knows we don’t have players on D, and he won’t say it. But I would like for him to hold accountability to himself and thacker and our defense, that our performance was unacceptable.

Partially about winning the next game but also about getting rid of the turnovers - at least for this year. Simply playing him and turning a blind eye to sloppy turnovers doesn't make sense either Collins is going to have to figure out how to get the point across This game was a whole lot closer without 4 turnovers that led directly to points.

Let me ask do you really think Sims doesn't understand that turnovers are detrimental? Like if he gets benched and is told it's because of the turnovers that he'll suddenly have an epiphany and that is the cure all? That isn't good coaching. That's just putting on a spectacle to be able to look like you are doing something even if it doesn't actually address the issue. What sims needs isn't the for the point to get across that turnovers are bad. He certainly knows that. What he needs is experience and an offseason to reflect and study film. There is no shortcut for that. The reality is you don't play a true freshman QB and lean on him as much as we do and not expect these types of things to happen. Turnovers are about the only thing he has issues with right now with the exception of maybe pre snap adjustment. Those turnovers aren't a result of not "getting it". They are a result of asking too much out of a true freshman because that is what your team needs.

Again, benching Sims isn't better for his development. Experience is too big a deal at this point and the "message" isn't really a new thing. If you think Graham or another QB gives us a better chance then make the switch. If not then you leave Sims in, get him his development, hope he takes care of the ball and makes enough plays to give you a chance to win, and live with the mistakes that were a foreseeable outcome when the decision to play a true freshman QB was made.

edit, we only had three turnovers and one had nothing to do with QB play so it's disingenuous to act like he was responsible for 4 turnovers today.

I thought it was a bad snap but one that Sims needs to catch.

Later I noticed William Lay got some run at center starting fairly early in the 2nd half, if I'm remembering correctly. Made me wonder when he came in and for what reason, given the rest of the starting OL played almost the entire game.
