Ok Braves friends and Yellow Jacket brothers/sisters... We get to see the Braves and Nationals face off over the next 4 days. I expect good baseball. I have no idea how these teams are looking at this series... but I hope it plays out as a good "measuring stick" as to where these teams are as the season enters the home [September] stretch.
I expect the series to end of 2-2.. big limb I'm going out on there. But if a team is poised to win it... I believe it is the Braves. Strasburg has been great all year. I always get worried about that random "bad outing" especially if a guy is due for one. Strasburg is past due for one. Corbin is great...better at home; but an outstanding #3. Ross regressed to his mean in his last outing; but had been playing above his pay-grade before that. Scherzer is not at 100%...yet. His "next" start could be the ONE, though. The Nats bullpen can't put 2-3 consecutive games together, much less 4. Assuming 2 of the games are close... the Nationals bullpen will blow one... at least. The only formula that works for the Nationals to win a series is to average about 8 runs per game. That's why they have a bad record against better than .500 teams. There is a tipping point there where bad teams cannot stop the Nats offense... good teams will hold them to 4 or fewer runs every other game or so; and usually, that is a loss for Washington.
In Mets series this week, the Nationals began to show some signs of mental fatigue. No excuse for some of the baserunning errors and some defensive play...mental stuff. I have been concerned about this. They have had to be in "playoff" mode for nearly 3 months now because of the big hole they dug early on and desperation to get back in playoff hunt. I could be wrong and will keep eye on that stuff this weekend. Will be a great test...and these series are always extra fun.
Anthony Rendon and Freddie Freeman enter this series as co-leaders in the RBI race in the MLB & NL at 114 RBI. Rendon is also the BA leader. Obviously, I like Rendon and will be pretty bent out of shape if the Nationals don't just re-sign him at the astronomical value the market will set for him in the off-season. Unlike the Harper situation, the Nationals have nothing close to being able to fill the void his absence will create. Harper was not worth it... Rendon is.. plain and simple. I also like Freeman...just seems like a good dude. I expect Rendon to win the batting title and RBI race in the NL this year. He's managed 114 RBI playing 15 fewer games than FF this season. But Freeman is just as capable of getting there too. One thing is for sure, Rendon and Freeman will lead the series in "smiles" this weekend... I like that!
Best of luck, all!! GO JACKETS!!!
