A few stats on the GT defense

This defense is not top 25. We get pushed around in the trenches too much and the way we play 10 yards off opposing WRs drives me bonkers.
That being said, we are making strides in the right direction and are improving every game, we still have a good ways to go though

+1

Don't want everyone to get excited about this defense just yet. We are headed in the right direction but our yards per play is what really matters. I do like seeing us climbing up the ranks in INTs though. That's exciting to see.

yds/play really matter??? Scoring Defense is all that matters

For the first six games (including Elon) our opponents have scored 16 offensive tds and 3 fgs, averaging 1.80 pts/drive. That would have been 37th last year.

That table didn't copy/paste over to the boards well but personally I think our total defense is inflated because our offense stays on the field a lot. Yards per play (to me) is a better measurement of where your defense is.

I think this is the best defense that we have had since 08 but I do not believe we are a top 25 defense. We may be statistically but there are more than 25 teams that have a better defense than us IMO.

Just wait for Pitt,Clemson, and UGA....we will have a better idea of how good we are then. I am hopeful though!

I agree that this d is very good, but it didn't play its best games against Miami and BYU. Miami scored 45 on us w/11 possessions. They scored 27 on UNC w/13. They only scored as many as 45 on USF and Sav, They only scored 34 on FAU. BYU scored as many as the 38 pts they scored on us in 13 drives only against TX, 40 in 18.

Both Miami and BYU had non-offensive scores against us. With that said, I know Miami had bunch of those against others too.

As far as the issue of 'statistics' is concerned, I would add that these stats need to be adjusted for schedule, which is a tough task itself.

I agree with this. I do feel confident in our Defense from what I have seen thus far. Especially 2nd half adjustments made by Roof. I think there are several areas that we can improve. One of which would be tackling. However, our Defense has looked better thus far than our Offense. But we will see exactly how good we are after Clemson and UGA.

I like what Eric said earlier: this defense is a heck of a lot better than the past few years. I really like the direction it is headed and hope it only gets better under Roof. I love that we are having these types of discussions about the D instead of melting down over how they can't stop anyone.

Thanks. My earlier post dealt only w/offensive scores, but I did post this one too quickly. It doesn't change the basic point of comparison, especially when you consider their non-offensive scores in other games.

I really feel like we are getting better and better every game on defense which is what you expect. I am just happy we have a lot of positive things to say about our defense.
