After the chaos of yesterday, here is my prediction for the CFP:

The easy ones (the winners):
Texas or uga
Oregon or PSU
Clemson or SMU
AZ State or Iowa St
Boise St or UNLV
Notre Dame

The almost easy:
The loser of the SEC, B1G, and ACC (unless it's Clemson)

Pretty sure about:
tOSU
Tennessee
Miami

I don't expect the committee will drop Miami completely out. Their loss was less embarrassing than the tOSU loss at home to Michigan.
Bama & Ole Miss did what was expected (or less than that) this weekend. Bama was ugly in that win and Ole Miss didn't even cover.

So these are my 12 teams in order:
Oregon (12-0)
Texas (11-1)
SMU (11-1)
Boise State (11-1)
Penn State (11-1)
Notre Dame (11-1)
Georgia (10-2)
Tennessee (10-2)
Ohio State (10-2)
Indiana (11-1)
Miami (10-2)
Arizona State (10-2)

Clearly, If Clemson upsets SMU, then Miami gets bumped
Also, a beat down of uga by Texas could bump the dogs out.
I don't expect it, but Bama gets in if Clemson puts up big numbers on SMU.

Well apparently we missed out on planting a flag and starting a massive brawl day ...
this is emblematic of the issues letting the kids “celebrate” after a play is going to being. I saw a ton of personal fouls called because fighting broke out when a player stepped over someone, stood over them, or taunted. They need to reel this back in.

I have no problem with letting the kids celebrate, but when it becomes a direct expression of domination against the opponent instead of a celebration of their jubilation and exuberance, that needs to be a penalty.

Now that players are getting paid, why not impose fines. This could come from the conference or the NCAA. If the player cannot pay the fine, he sits. If a booster pays the fine for him, he sits double the time. The head coach getting a slap on the wrist doesn't work. I would study the film of the NC State game and the Michigan game an see who threw punches, etc. Fine their asses. Or declare them ineligible for some number of games next season. Planting a flag on the opponents field was the instigation and that should also be punished.

Looking at the Ohio state / Michigan game. I think it was HC Ryan Day that just froze up during the brawl and did nothing to help reign things in (maybe there should be a fine for that).

But I still wonder if pepper spray was really necessary for that brawl

Only way that happens is if players are designated as employees and there’s CBA in place. When that happens, I’ll be done with college football like I am with pro football.

More annoying is with OSU laying the egg today... it sets up the SEC (loser of SECCG) to get the coveted #5 seed. Play home game v G5 Champ as a 2-3 TD favorite... then move to quarterfinal v the #4 seed likely the B12 Champ... again ... likely a double digit favorite.

We'll see... but once bracket is announced next week... that #5 seed path is going to get a lot of people questioning whether this format (seeding, specifically) makes the right kind of sense.
Easily could be that way. How the who the loser is and how the games play out will matter. ND could also be #5 as they will only have 1 loss and are currently #5.
It occurred to me earlier in the season that ND probably recognized the value of the #5 seed as a motivator to remain independent.

#12 and #4 seem primed to remain weak links relative to their seed in future years too based on today’s selection and seeding process.

This.
I think ND has all but locked the 5 spot. The only way they don’t is if Texas loses to UGA. I think Texas would stay above the Irish.

Here’s a fun thought I had while watching a few frigid snow covered fields on Thanksgiving… there is a very high likelihood that 3 of the opening playoff rounds are in South Bend IN, Columbus OH, and Uni Park PA at the end of December. More than likely, it’ll be southern teams visiting.

I think you’ve done a nice job with this. Personally, I think Miami is a ‘bubble team’. I’m not convinced they’re in. I think the other 11 you have outlined are in (substitute ASU with winner of B12).

Argument for Miami is their record is 10-2. And argument against is ACC and they’re playing 0.500 football in November.

If Clempson beats SMU, I do think both teams (Clemp and SMU) are in unless it’s a blowout. I think SMU wins and am surprised the line is a pickem. But Clemp will get home cooking most likely. If Clemp beats SMU small, and both Clemp and SMU are in, I see Miami clearly out of the playoffs.

I think the SEC will lobby for Bama and USCe. They won’t get both in and frankly, neither deserve to be in. Bama lobby will tout name recognition. And USCe will lobby not losing since mid-October (6 game winning streak).

Yes, I saw that when ranking my top 12 for the CFP. PSU and uga being the hypothetical losers, fall into the 5-8 group with ND. I put PSU and ND ahead of uga simply because of the two losses. And Tennessee after uga because of the H2H. I think the committee could reasonably flip ND and PSU and would be fine with that. I don't believe Tennessee could flip with uga unless Texas really destroys the dogs. The best scenario for the ACC is for the committee to keep Miami in as the #11 team. ESPN is really lobbying for Bama in that spot.

I could see some ACC SEC chaos next weekend. I wonder what happens if Clemson wins a close well played game. Would the committee dump SMU? I wonder, also, if uga is safe if they another egg. For three weeks they have not looked great. Would they be safe with a fourth?

I agree with you. ESPN was already in full ahead mode this morning saying the committee had to decide between Bama and USCe, and that Miami was definitely out of the CFP. They also said SMU woould be out if they lose to Clemson. Their lobbying for the SEC is shameful.

One potential super controversial outcome (from the committee). Call it ACC Screw Job 2.0.

You have (latest playoff rankings) #9 SMU & #10 Indiana both 11-1 in regular season. The consensus is Indiana is a lock to make the field; but SMU is not (a lock). Should SMU lose to Clemson... & drop out of the field, you've penalized a team for making their conference championship game.

After Friday (well early Saturday morning), I did a TV cleanse so I haven’t followed it but am not surprised.

When I was making some college football ‘futures’ bets in July, I searched high and low for a conference type bet. For example X ACC teams will make playoffs? In my mind, I thought X would be 1.5 and being the cynic I am, I favored under.

I couldn’t ever find a bet like this. If I did, it would have been quite a roller coaster, looking like 1 for most of the season (in my opinion), until last weekend, then looking surely like 2 or even 3, and now after this weekend, looking like 1 or maybe 2. We’ll see…

That’s an awful take to have this morning.
Especially after this weekends games.

Next week, I tTHINK the rankings should look like this.

Oregon
Texas
PSU
ND
UGA
tOSU
Tenn
SMU
IU
Boise
Miami
Bama

The Big12 (or second G5) champ will eliminate Bama and a Clemson win eliminates Miami

Im watching where they put SMU. IU put up massive numbers in a glorified scrimmage and if the Hoosiers jump SMU, that’s a sign the ACC is a one bid league and SEC / ESPN / Bama lobby has won

I watched UGA do it to us at BDS when PJ was coaching. It needs to be a large fine administered by the conference. No place for it. Of course the dumb players had trouble with artificial turf.
UNC totally trashed the visitors locker room at Duke after a loss a few years ago. Several thousand dollars of damage. Absolutely classless.
SEC supposedly fines host school if students storm the field.
Refs need to be fined or suspended for incompetence. The biggest example I can remember is a NFL playoff game with the Saints where the interference call could not have been so obvious and was right in front of the official. Cost them the game. Teams should be able to exclude those refs in future games.
That targeting by UGA to HK could have also caused serious injury. As it was it allowed them to have an opportunity to tie the game with advantageous field position. The play had to be reviewed since it was a fumble.

:D
You caught me typing the same thing. If IU jumps SMU, they’ve determined ACC is a one bid league (which is BS)

ND cannot be #4 in the CFP rankings. Only the top four ranking conference champs can be 1-4. ND can be #5. Boise is the likely #4 seed.
