Anyone heard if we still expect to add anymore in the portal? We seem pretty light on numbers on defense still

My opinion based on limited info:

On defense we are light in the numbers at Nickel and SDE and very light in experienced depth at CB. By moving Cruz and adding Height we have much improved WDE. SDE will at least need fresmen Boyd and/or LLOH to step up. Flexable DE players Scott and Gore will help here. LB is OK with the addition of portals Lightsey, Hamilton, Tatum returning, and Frosh Butler. We are now 4 deep at the Nose and T positions counting portals Van De Berg, Gore, freshman Marshall, Jones in second year, and PWO Adams. Versatile players Shelley and portal Gibbs helps out the S, CB, and N spots and I was pleased with the freshmen play of Dowdell and Franklin in the Spring game. I can also envision the D to utilize a LB at N in situations. I do not see any needs to pick up portals in the Offense unless there is an opportunity with an outstanding youthful talent or a sure fire return specialist. If all the current players stick we are in pretty good shape. Coaches are doing a good job with roster management.

One disagreement. I don't think Harpring will stay at TE. Imho, he 's too valuable at DE to put him anywhere else. TEs we have and pretty good ones too. DEs who can cut a 4.6 40 at 230lbs, not so much. He's potentially another Coleman Rudolph. I'm guessing that the coaches will fight over him and that Santucci will win out.

But all that is in the future.

He can pull a Travis Hunter and play both sides, I’d be just fine with that. Situational offense and defense

Good way to get a kid that wants to play TE to transfer. This ain't yesterday's rodeo. I anticipate we'll see a lot more push back from the players, especially if they start getting paid.

Well … we know what the scout sites say he wants to play. My guess is that we don't know what the young man would like to play. That place would be where he can get on the field the fastest, imho. That'll be for the coaches to decide. After the dogfight, that is.

100% agree with this. If he wants to play TE, I think that's already been settled. However, when they get into camp, then next spring, then another camp/season, we'll see. Even Derrick Morgan got limited snaps as a true freshman. See him getting on the field much faster as a receiving TE.

See attached article concerning the NCAA Transfer rule requiring players to sit out one year after first transfer. I don't assume anyone was following that rule anyway since we read about players going to a 3rd or 4th school. I suppose this DOJ lawsuit against the NCAA makes it official that players can transfer as many times as they like. Deal between DOJ and NCAA needs final approval by Judge.

At this point in time, we need to make defense the priority. Any decisions regarding placement of personnel should by default, weigh on the side of defense. We must do whatever it takes to improve our defense.
With the loss of players we are close to a very strong need at DE as it looks. We have an ex-injured SR and then a bunch of unproven hopes and dreams. So, having him at DE helps the team a LOT it seems.

Harpring is not playing DE lol not why people keep thinking that. We do need to land another transfer DE though to let Bradford, Illoh, and Boyd develop

Well … mainly because he really made a splash at DE at Marist. Check his films or his stats: he looks better at a rush position then as a TE, imho. Tech is thinner at his potential position than at TE as well. He'll get to the field sooner where the depth isn't as great. But like I said, that'll be up to the coaches and the young man. He'll do well where ever he plays, again imho.

I agree. The HS films of his I've seen made me think of HS SR Brock Bowers. Great hands and runs very well for a young man of his size.

Glad you guys see potential for Harping - give me a TE that sees the coverage and has hands. His dad was a tough customer.

Last year our t ends were a big part of both the passing and run game.
