We control our own destiny at this point for World Cup qualifying. The top 3 teams in CONCACAF are automatic qualifiers in the World Cup. The fourth team has to play a win or don't get in game against a team from the Oceania region. For 2nd, 3rd, or 4th in the qualifying group. We have to rely on Canada tripping to come in first. The better we do, the better our group in the World Cup should be.
Also, while having a magic number of "win every one of your four remaining games, including Mexico and two other contenders" is controlling your own destiny to come in second the way you describe, it's not comfortable.
In the past few times we made the World Cup--unlike the last fiasco--we've been assigned to a murder group that's hard to get into the second round from. Your worldwide ranking influences how you get sorted. We've lost two games, and we really shouldn't have lost any. So, coming in 3rd or 4th could also mean "Congrats! You start with Germany and Argentina".
I don't think it matters what place we finish in qualifying, as long as we qualify. The top seeds in the World Cup are set by world ranking, which shouldn't change much based on CONCACAF qualifying games. Based on the FIFA rankings from 12/23/21, the USA was #11, Mexico was #14, and Canada was #40. They will be updated in the next week or so, I believe. Perhaps they'll move Canada up a little higher, but I can't imagine that they'll jump ahead of the USA or Mexico based on a recent home win and a road draw against each in qualifying.
After the host country and the next top 7 qualifiers, teams are put into pots that are drawn as to which group they will compete in. So, unless we're one of the top 7 teams in the world, which we're not, we're just as likely to end up in #5 Argentina's group as Canada or Mexico is, regardless whether we finish 1st or 3rd. Just qualify!
