Wright looks like a potential plus starter who could a VERY good player if he puts it all together...which is likely if he continues to work with Reveno.

In regards to Wright, I have heard on multiple occasions that Coach Wilkins is the one personally working with him. But Reveno has clearly demonstrated his ability with bigs - we should have no prob signing a C/PF who wants to get significantly more skilled!

Turning back to this since it's selection Sunday, and GT is yet again not even a thought in the college basketball world.

Gave our team more thought, and one thing that keeps popping in my head is: GT has talent. It's not elite NBA lottery Duke/UNC/FSU top 5 ACC talent, but GT has enough talent to play in the top 6-8 teams (we finished 10th this season) in the ACC space next season. When GT is on, we can hang in there with the elite teams, but their elite talent eventually takes over and leaves us in their wake. That doesn't mean we can't beat the VT's/Clemsons/Pitts/NDs/NC State's of the ACC.

The problem is consistency, especially from the offensive end of the floor. GT defense is GOOD, and it will get even better because of maturation and our key players returning. We've got some upper end pieces from a recruiting standpoint:

Michael Devoe (2018 class): 4 Star, #11 PG, #51 overall
James Banks (2016 class): 4 Star, #9 C, #63 overall
Jordan Usher (Transfer - 2017 class): 4 star, #22 SG, #104 overall

Then we have Jose Alvarado who we would all agree has outperformed his 3 star rating (was almost a 4 star) to become one of the better ACC PGs. Probably the leader of our team who developed from his Freshmen season, but hit a bit of slump towards the end of the year. He will be years better next season.

Khalid Moore is going to be a REALLY good player for us, and gives us someone to can create a bit and some length from the wings.

Curtis Haywood had a down year which I'll blame on a sophomore slump. He's a good player who was a solid contributor his freshmen year before getting injured. Probably one of our best outside shooters...and he needs to learn to look for his shot. As @RamblinRed pointed out earlier in the year, he's got a sneaky good game.

Kristian Sjolund proved he has a role in our rotation as someone who can come in and give us a shooting threat.

Moses Wright is an enigma, but an enigma that shows high upside when he does the the things our staff asks of him. There are sequences where he looks like he's one of the best players on the floor, then other sequences that make you want to throw your drink at the TV. The hope is maturation smooths out the latter.

Evan Cole had a series of games where he looked like a solid contributor, but I think his role for us will always be the "hard nose hustle guy" who does the little things to help us. Every team needs those guys.

If you look at the setup, this is exactly how the "get old stay old" progresses. If everything goes according to plan (*knock on wood*), next season was always the season for GT to turn the corner (even though Pastner's first season was a pleasant surprise). Our two guards will be JR/SO with a lot of minutes played in the ACC. Our Center is one of the best defensive centers in the ACC, and will have a better offensive game with a full offseason under Reveno (hopefully he stays). Jordan Usher transfers in and hopefully makes a quick acclimation to our team. Guys like Khalid Moore, Sjolund, Haywood, and Wright take the next step and become key pieces that offer a certain dimension with their different games.

The combo of Alvarado/Devoe/Banks will be one of the better trios in the ACC. GT needs two players to step up and be plus contributors at the other two spots. The key is Alvarado/Devoe/Banks staying healthy all next season, and someone like Moore and Haywood taking on a bigger role and developing their game and confidence.

They say it gets worse before it gets better, well the last two seasons have not been fun. Hopefully next season is the year all the pieces come together and fun will return on the Flats with our basketball team.

.

I think the probabilities are very high that usher will claim one of those spots. We'll need one of these last recruits to be a "bucket getter" from day 1 if we're going to have a shot at the dance next year. Sure hope that lousy publicity hasn't screwed things up for CJP's alleged recruiting prowess.

We would be having the same discussion that the NCAA hasn't been able to hang anything on our head coach ... yet
As long as your coach hasn't been recorded on a wire tap, then isn't "NCAA hasn't been able to hang anything on our head coach ... yet" more of a good thing than a bad thing?

Unfortunately, I'm beginning to get the feeling that Pastner may never recruit to Cremins/Hewitt levels. I think we'll get the Devoe/Banks level recruits that are top 100 here and there, but getting 5 star guys may be too much given "what it takes" in this era of recruiting and GT's reluctance to do that. The fact that GT had so much ACC playing time to give high level recruits at multiple positions, and we still could not close the deal on the high level guys IN STATE recruits is a bad omen for me.

In this day and age of college basketball, I think you pretty much know what a coach can and can't achieve within the first few recruiting classes. I'm more than happy to be proven wrong, but I don't have a good feeling for Pastner recruiting at GT like I did when we first hired him. The hope now is we do sign more Devoe and Banks level recruits, and the get old stay old process bears fruit.

Of course, now that I said it, we'll probably sign two five star recruits this Spring...:)

Until we're willing and able to spend $$$, we might as well stick with Pastner.

Look at the SEC title game. Two schools that spent to get good coaches and they are quickly in the conf title game.

We aren't likely to get there in the cheap

I tend to generally agree. Maybe Tech's recruiting strategy has to be signing mostly Devoe/Banks level guys who are developed as opposed to 5-star types who might be instant stars. The recruiting methods used in Bobby's day, and to some extent Hewitt's day, might cause a recruiter to HAVE to do some 'splaining these days. Nevertheless, I'm optimistic that 'we can be all that we can be' in the next year or so.

In the thirty or thereabouts years between Bobby's arrival and Hewitt's departure, we won double-digit ACC games only twice (1985-86, 1995-96). This year we won 6 ACC games and finished 10th (as opposed to the preseason prediction of 13th, 14th or even 15th) with a team of IMMENSE youth and little time playing together. ( Tenth is the bottom of the mid-tier of 15 teams.) With the development of Devoe, Wright, Banks and the addition of the Usher kid, methinks we have a decent shot at winning 9 to 11 ACC games next season.

Assuming that we handle our business ( I.e. no egregious or BAD losses) in the non-conference schedule in '19-'20, 9 wins likely makes us a bubble team; 10 wins get us an invite to the Dance with almost certainty. Assuming that we have no debilitating injuries next season and also assuming that Moore develops a reliable 12 foot jumper and that Sjolund can learn to play a little pro-active defense instead of re-active defense, the Jackets should have a solid season and participate in the first week of March Madness '20. Call me an eternal optimist, but methinks we're close.

This. Why bother absorbing any kind of buyout in the near term unless we're willing and able to spend what it takes on a high level hoops program?

Ironic you should say that as i just looked at Auburn's staring lineup hometowns (listed below)

Stone Mountain, GA
Mableton, GA
Atlanta, GA
Warwick, GA
North Augusta, SC

Guess we'll need CGC to train CJP in some of that "taking care of your backyard" stuff.

No, we're definitely recruiting the 5 stars hard. Wendell Carter is the obvious one as his strip club visit is the direct result of GT no longer having Labarrie and our being under investigations. Sexton was rumored to have been a GT commit and reneged at the last minute due to $ome $erious 'Bama $omething...which is well documented by now. Then there's Okoro, MJ Walker, etc. Pastner is definitely putting a lot of effort into recruiting the 5 stars...the 5 stars just aren't coming for whatever reason.
