2/1 - MBB vs. Louisville

Seemed like Louisville was the king of the just barely (probably not actually) legal moving screen and we were the kings of the not at all effective but still illegal screen. Baye needs to not push off the defender with his arm extended. I know he wants to let the guy know he's there and think twice in his defense and I totally support that but an extended arm is just begging for a whistle and/or a soccer flop. His rolls to the basket are becoming really smooth otherwise. Really hope he and Nait can keep this show going one more year at least because they are on the edge of some deadly chemistry.

The win vs a quality opponent shows the effort and level of play (except again for FTs) that we had.Best win in a while. we are not really good overall (away? FTs? def Rebs? depth?) ) but-- DANGEROUS on any given night.

about the FT problem

Louisville managed to shoot themselves in the foot more than us at the line.

I like the fact that George is looking to score more. I think he passes up open jumpers while trying to assist other's shot. But last night when the defender backed off a little he took the shot. And he is an excellent shooter.
I heard George talking with Andy on my way home. George mentioned that Stoudamire has been encouraging him to shoot more mid-range jumpers.

He has to be a scoring threat post high pick or the rest of the offense falls apart. CDS is pushing for the obvious. I thought George was very efficient and impactful with his decisions to shoot/pass in this game. He has been getting better the last several games. Much less pounding the ball looking for THE pass. Hit the roll if it is there, take a shot if everyone drops off or simply move the ball and keep the possession going. Getting much better.

Gets kind of lost in the grand scheme of the game but I want to give a shoutout to Baye for this play when we were down double digits. We've all been hard on him this season for his play but this high-effort offensive rebound and basket sparked a 10-0 killshot over the following 2 minutes that got us back in the game.

Concur.

He played hard. Seems like he's better when not the focal point offensively. I think it was before the ND game, the commentators mentioned something like he's never been the 'star' of his team.

Nothing wrong with that imho because he's talented in his own right. We just have to be mindful that forcing him into that role won't help us.

Vs Lville, seemed he just took what the defense gave. Wasn't forcing it. Found success.

We've known since Baye stepped in the center circle last year @Cincinnati that he was crazy strong and crazy athletic (although I personally wish he would put weight back on for the sake of how we use him, but I get it). I understand that his pro prospects rely on him dropping weight and adding more of an outside game, but I'd love to see Baye just set screens, roll to the basket, and do the LeBron thing of physically imposing himself to the rim for a bunch of layups and dunks. I know everyone on this board aced their PHYS 2211 final -- opponents should be afraid of the wattage they are about to encounter by stepping in front of him.

I thought Baye was supposed to heavier this season. Are you saying he is lighter?

There's been some mixed disinfo on this - hopefully this comes across more as an ad for the quality info Kelly Quinlan's subscription provides and not just a paywall leak, but Baye lost 20-30 lbs of muscle this offseason and CDS was not happy about it. This next part is conjecture but I am guessing this is something that came out of his NBA combine appearance.

Interesting. Ok. I’ll take your word for it.

That certainly starts to explain his horrid start to the year. Though I can't imagine the NBA scouts saying he needs to be leaner? He already had NBA level explosion, quickness and athleticism. Beyond that I am a bit concerned he did/was able to lose that much weight without consulting CDS or without CDS knowing. I know he spent a lot of time away from school but still....

I was believing all the NBA said was he needed to develop a consistent jump shot from at least 15 to 18 feet. He hasn't done that. Don't know why he would go into body shaping that much over developing the jumper. 🤷‍♀️

He was officially weighed & height measured at last year’s NBA Elite Camp. If he lost at least 20 pounds during his trip home in order to collect NIL $, I can understand why that would piss off CDS. That’s a lot of weight to lose at his height and would put him at or under 200 lbs. Seriously doubt that would have been an NBA recommendation or that CDS would not have been aware of such a recommendation. But it might explain his being manhandled & chuckled at by Bearcat players who dominated him back in November and his early season performance level & constant foul trouble. At least he looks to be back on track now.
