This nonsense is just stupid, and it is eroding fan interest in college sports.

I also don’t get why anyone would pay these kids for endorsements outside of playing basketball. They aren’t marketable personalities or celebrities. Literally no one knows or cares who they are. That’s the nature of being a hired gun who is here today and gone tomorrow.
The two players I mentioned are expected to be the #1 picks in the next two drafts and potentially generational talents.

I think this year's HS NIL market has heated up, given COVID years are generally coming to an end, likely diluting the portal of the most experienced players.

Thanks, yikes some big numbers. NIL strategy is on my mind.

Key (and staff) seems to be catching on to NIL on limited budget, deciding who to keep, who to get - plus developing good players into better players.

NIL seems huge for assembling a professional style college basketball program not big on development - but you only need a couple great players to make an impact. Anyway just random thoughts - maybe I should go to a Tech Way meeting to learn more.
Rumor, just rumor, is that MBB has a $3 million NIL budget. Paster had $0.

It's purely pay for play. NIL is irrelevant or just a ploy.

This would be a middle of the pack NIL budget across the country. Maybe upper middle.

Plenty of schools with quite a bit more. Double that or more.
You obviously follow this - do you think $3M is maybe enough to get two very good players plus a handful of role players? Of course keeping them is a challenge. Not much room for injuries or academic problems.

So a typical college coaching staff now needs top level NIL strategy and negotiating expertise. Spend the limited money unproductively and you’re toast - unless you’re one of the teams (not us) with enough money to be a little sloppy. About $8-10M gives you room for errors and enough to always retain star players? I bet a lot of guys going into coaching didn’t plan on it being quite this way.

I understand and I totally agree. I was just responding to a comment about Cooper Flagg getting NIL plus additional outside endorsement deals. Who would give a crap if Cooper Flagg endorses anything. No one cares about Cooper Flagg other than playing basketball at Duke for all of 3 months or so before he is forgotten entirely.

Hmmm

Player compensation really doesn't have a lot to do with why Duke shot over 56% from the floor against us and we shot just over 36%.

Maybe kvetching over program budgets may be a salve for fans' chapped keysters after getting spanked by Duke, but it has no such beneficial effects on me.

What I see is that, so far, our coach is not getting a lot out of what he has. We showed some flashes last year that gave me hope, but those flashes are far and few between this season.

In terms of building a program, losing is like a potent drug. A little expertly administered can result in a healthy program. But too much is poison.

This coach is losing way too much. It doesn't matter why. This trend is unsustainable.

Flagg getting outside endorsements wouldn’t have much to do with Duke at all. Potential top NBA draft picks have influence all on their own for certain types of products and markets. Wemby was a big name for a long time too (a bigger one, of course, but a similar thing).

Duke as always has many more better players than GT. Scheyer seems decent as a coach, he can get great players but has not had the high level success Duke fans expect.

We have been a poor shooting team for 2 straight years now. We need to be better at shooting the ball. Too many open shots clanging off the iron and too many tough shots taken. I think CDS wants to run more, but we don't play good enough defense for that yet. So, we need to have an offensive set that allows us to get open shooters and then those shooters need to hit their shots. Way too many 4-5 minute scoring droughts.

Most likely, the ones who footed that bill are the ones who influenced the decision to hire CDS in the first place.
Man, I really hope their bet pays off but it seems like they threw their money on green at the roulette table. Next year will be crucial.

It was a concession by the NCAA as the talk of “slave like treatment” of college athletes grew. Media whores that wanted to maintain their access with both the NCAA and the athletes pushed the narrative and their mindless minions followed as they lacked the grey matter to identify the cliff they were walking off.

Combine that with realignment murdering regional rivalries and players making stops at 3 and 4 programs before their graduation and it’s not difficult to see why casual fans are disinterested.

I have watched less college basketball this season than any season since I became a fan during LJs run at UNLV.

They’re called role players for a reason. You don’t think missing three starters, then you don’t have a clue.

We probably still lose this game, but when you’re not playing at full strength, then everyone else suffers.
Those role players also need to be a fit with different combinations when they rotate in to match against opponent’ starters and their own rotations. Injuries set back players far longer than just a healing period, if & when they return. The uninjured get gassed early in games without relief. But let’s fire coaches, have our freshmen & sophomores go portal, the 2025 & 2026 classes decommit & all present recruits remove GT from their final lists. That will make so many of the clueless happy around here. We’ll never get a rebuild & griping about Tech basketball can remain a lifetime endeavor. Don’t like CDS & the guys playing for Tech? Ok, don’t watch any more. Go watch & support the undefeated, 17th ranked, #1 Lady Jackets or are they too successful, leaving y’all with nothing to ***** about?
