Do academics mean anything anymore at college

I taught at a D3 school. Grants don’t exist there. Students take part in athletics as part of the college experience… not to get a grant. CPJ described Tech as basically a service academy. Limited curriculum, good kids, lots of discipline. It isn’t like 99% of the schools in D1. Here’s how USMA...

Do academics mean anything anymore at college

All depends. Gymnastics is revenue generating. So is swimming/diving. Various sports sell tickets, naming rights, and development. Know who has the best suite at BDS? Bruce Heppler. Tech itself funds nothing. The Hill provides out of state tuition waivers which is the bulk of it's investment...

Do academics mean anything anymore at college

As someone who actually teaches D1 athletes, I have a different experience. The areas of concern are usually football, basketball and baseball. Students from all other sports - golf, tennis, track, swimming, diving, gymnastics - are usually straight A students. And not "basketweaving" either...

Do academics mean anything anymore at college

I think there's a bit of a romantic view of college sports as pure, or amateur (love of the game) etc and that the move towards $$$ is recent. I assure you it isn't. I know players personally who received exams and completed term papers slid under their doors at night by the tutoring staff. It's...

    Conference Realignment

Since 2014, college football has become nothing more than programming content. The bowl games (a number of them are owned outright by ESPN), the CFP (a made for tv event), Game Day (number one sports show) are all about viewership.

    Conference Realignment

The GOR explicitly lists out what rights each school is granting to the Conference. They include: All rights under the US and/or foreign copyright laws All reproduction, performance, display, distribution, and other intellectual property rights The right to modify distort or alter the Works and...

More or less. But schools have evolved significantly since this was introduced. Time to update... especially D1.

    Conference Realignment

Doubtful. While there are perhaps, a few thousand donors to A-T, only about 10 (yes, t-e-n) really move the needle. Even TStan, when asked, said he had no plans to increase "fund-raising" because he could simply call 10 or so donors and get what he needed. I did a study on it a few years ago and...

    Adidas Contract Expiring

Athletes get a different, better product. I have a warm up and love it. Not available at retail.

    Conference Realignment

Why is that important to you? It is a fact that the GOR conveys individual rights to a collective. That the ESPN -ACC agreements predate it doesn't change that.

    Adidas Contract Expiring

I looked it up. It appears that Adidas themselves did not do this, but rather ... fans could create their own customized jerseys and some did using the "4" runes. Adidas submitted them to the soccer governing body and no one objected until ... it hit social media. They have since blocked the use...

Not quite. The “producers” conveyed their rights to another who would negotiate on their collective behalf. The ESPN Agreement is between the conference and ESPN. A member school can leave, but their conveyed rights remain through the term.

They were not concurrent at the time they were signed. The ESPN agreements are dated July 8, 2010, May 9, 2012, and June 24, 2014. The term of the GOR is through June 30, 2027, but that is modified per the amendment to June 30, 2036. The GOR specifically states that the member schools have to...

    Conference Realignment

The GOR states (Paragraph 1) that each of the Schools “irrevocably and exclusively grants to the Conference...all rights...necessary for the Conference to perform the contractual obligations of the Conference expressly set forth in the ESPN Agreement...” By signing, member schools have to...

    Conference Realignment

The GOR establishes that ESPN has sole right to produce and distribute the broadcasts of the games. And ... that the schools have conveyed their rights to the Conference to negotiate their rights on their behalf. That's because the Conference sold their rights to ESPN before the GOR. I am...

True. But that's a $400 million difference over ten years.

    Conference Realignment

Not much of a premise. There is no way Boston College, Wake, Syracuse etc will exit the ACC - there is simply no place to go. Even Miami has said they want to stay in the ACC.

    Conference Realignment

As long as the ACC exists in any form, GT can only go to a conference whose "works" are distributed and broadcast by ESPN. That pretty much means ... the SEC.

    Conference Realignment

It’s estimated that ESPN nets $100 million off the ACC. There’s no reason to just give that up for nothing. Second, the ACCN isn’t just going to disappear. Do you think they (ESPN) want to watch it sign up with NBC, CBS (who just lost the SEC), or AppleTV or some combination of the above...
