I had this question, too. Further, it seemed like we ran to the side where there wasn't an A-back, which seemed odd.
I also looked back - perhaps trying to make myself feel better, perhaps trying to understand what happened - but the similarities between this game and last year's Duke game...
This was about our blocking on the edge. They took the dive away, but we couldn't block the alleys at all the whole game. If we get that fixed, everything will be just fine.
I wonder how much the presence of Dennis Andrews would have changed this game. He was the best blocking A back at the end of last year, and I just can't help but think of wasn't dismissed from the team he could have cleared the alley and punished them for overcommitting to stop the dive.
This game is relatively simple to explain. We missed FGs we needed and they took away the dive, which would have been a problem if our A backs decided to finish their blocks. Whether it's because they're young or something else, the blocking on the edge was atrocious, and it allowed them to...
Every damn time. Every friggin' game is a referendum on the offense. If we struggle it's because it was figured out. Also, pointing out the deficiencies of the officiating isn't an excuse but explaining what happened comprehensively. We did enough to deserve to lose - by not blocking on...
I think this has a lot to do with the fact that we don't have to hold blocks for very long, which is why we cut so much. As it turns out, though, our line is extremely capable of simply blowing opponents off the ball now. I'm not sure that was the case three or four years ago, but it is now...
If we could return three starters instead of two, that would be, like, a 50% increase. Seriously, though, this is really good news, because he has been pretty good for a while now. Anything that buys the new kids more time to learn and be physically more prepared is excellent for us.
At the end of last year, we were ranked #12 in the Sagarin Ratings, behind two teams (UGA and Mississippi State) we beat in non-home games. I don't take his rankings seriously. Further, it seems impossible to me to have a computer poll done before the season, because there's no data...
I think the whole motivation thing is largely nonsense. It's typically offered as a post hoc explanation for what happened. These guys don't have the time to keep track of who is voting where.
All of this is a long way of saying it's week two, so who cares.
