The players say he's genuine and the culture is the real deal. I do agree he's been over his head in some ways. To his credit he does seem capable of fixing things/learning (e.g. reduced penalties this year).
Hopefully he learns to be more direct in his press conferences and less defensive/gets...
Yes...this is just common sense.
I could also see Sims used in a package where he does what he does best. Could give teams more to prep for without too much extra work on our side. Cutcliffe did this to good advantage at Duke when he had the personal.
If we can run consistently vs UNC, limit their possessions, keep their O on the sidelines, etc we have a good chance.
Get behind and/or try to be in a shootout with them and good luck.
Will be hard to stop them on third and long. Need pressure. VT beat UNC in the trenches both sides of the...
Yates has come a LONG way. A real long way. He has not always had the composure he has been showing. After the spring game I posted that he had really improved and looked like a very legitimate #2. But prior to that he looked like a trainwreck: a spastic little dude running around and trying to...
Further Game Thoughts Defense:
A lot to say about the defensive line
No Keion White still sucks. This guy had a ton of TFLs and is the kind of big, fully developed guy you need against Clemson. Could have been a difference maker shutting down Clemson’s run IMO. Also missed sorely vs NIU along...
Further Game Thoughts:
Offense / Special Teams
We had some success running the ball on the perimeter when we got the ball out there quick and when we got the ball to Dante. Some folks asked why Dontae isn’t in there more and my guess is blocking. Possibly he does not run with as much power as...
As far as Yates and Sims go, I say let them compete in practice and start whoever you think gives you the best chance. Let them know if they falter you may bring the other guy in for a series or two so they can regroup, but if the other guy starts lighting it up you will ride the hot hand.
So...
Agree trenches are not as strong as I had hoped. Glad to see AC Clayton play after not playing VS NIU. This is the week Keon White, the transfer from ODU is supposed to be able to go (recovering from broken leg/non-football related I believe). IF we can stay healthy I think the DL has a chance...
Be nice when DE White transfer from ODU can play as well as AC. Two guys who can create negative plays. Missed Clayton last week...could have really used him.
IMO Stansbury has been pretty consistent in his messaging. He gave Collins a long term contract because they both felt it was going to take time to transition from the spread option to a more conventional offense. He made that very overt at the time. Now he is again saying the transition is...
Well, I personally wouldn't go that far. It's an awful small sample size for Sims to play 1 quarter of football and to say he is sunk. It's pretty common for a young QB to start a game tight or hopped up and then loosen up and play better as the game progresses. It may be that Sims hasn't...
This. I said as much in chat during the game. From what we hear Sims was red hot the last two weeks of practice and our OC thought he'd be able to hit the guys he imagined would be running free (and did in fact run free).
That said when you are picking up chunk yardage running the ball and they...
Thoughts on ST and Coaching
I actually liked our ST play outside of the FG unit. KO’s went into the end zone which was awesome. Punts were effective, covered well, and protection was good. KO returns seemed reasonable.
Punt returns made me nervous. It seemed like Rey was wanting to do too much...
Thoughts on defense:
Credit NIU for coming up with some creative packages we’d never seen and that worked really well. Credit them also for deciding they had to be able to run the ball and committing to it. Wish we had done so ourselves. I credit us with adjusting to their run game and stopping...
Thoughts on offense:
I wanted to come out and establish the run game. We had several successful runs early but drives were frequently stopped when we were unable to execute lower percentage passing plays. Yes the plays were there and the receivers were running open. But the fact is we didn’t...
