  1. What would JT have done in this offense?

I think Johnson had three QBs who were never going to be college QBs in any other offense: Nesbitt, Washington and Thomas. In all three cases it can be said he fit the personnel to his offense. But Nesbitt was a power runner, Washington the best option QB of the three, and Thomas the only dual...
  2. What if football went away?

I get it. I played. My sons played. My sons now say their sons won't be allowed to play. There is a lot to love about football, the Fedoras of this world aside. (My first year of varsity football gave me more confidence in myself than I ever thought possible, and not just blocking and tackling...
  3. What if football went away?

Even if true it still leaves you a 30-year window for a national health debacle, but frankly no helmet is going to prevent that damage. It just can't. I'm not really arguing to abolish the sport, though I do feel over time it will be.
  4. What if football went away?

Don't have a clue, but surely you are not suggesting that CTE is somehow quarantined to the NFL? The players are the same, you know. And let's remember one does not have to get hit in the head, or get his head bounced off the turf, to get a concussion. I know of one particular case in which a...
  5. What if football went away?

That's the old Richard Nixon gambit, and don't take it personally. Nixon was big on "some say I should bomb the Soviet Union, and others say I should just surrender, but I have chosen a wise middle path ..." and we would breath a sigh of relief that the wise Richard Nixon was our president...
  6. What if football went away?

I will write it off as an unfortunate choice of words. But worrying about the short and long-term health effects on individuals and the health care system of this country -- already not one to boast about when compared with other western countries -- is really not meddling, any more than...
  7. TECH OFFENSE

Well, that would be better than 'Bama did. I think they decked him once, and every time they got in his face he found the gap they left. So we might want to be a bit careful because he has what the coaches think are four first round drafts as receivers. I actually think how we play Clemson will...
  8. TECH OFFENSE

I haven't seen a practice so I know about what everybody else seems to know. But my guess is identifying skills and installing offense and defensive schemes. I wouldn't be surprised if several guys went from one side of the ball to the other before August. I would be very surprised if we saw...
  9. Record Attendance Spring Game

Tech can pull a 'Bama. Check the attendance of its rival -- Georgia or maybe Clemson -- and add 2,000 to it. There is a precedence for this sort of thing these days, you know. Clemson people swear Alabama claimed 62,000 attendance after 60,000 showed up -- well, Clemson said -- at Clemson's...
  10. Previous Offense and Recruiting

So those long TDs by Tech in the Orange Bowl were not even unique to MSU, then. Goodness. I always wanted to be a fly on the wall when opposing teams were in the film room breaking down their next opponent from game film.
  11. Previous Offense and Recruiting

Shoot, if this was the first you haven't been paying attention.
  12. Previous Offense and Recruiting

    his defense was.
  13. TECH OFFENSE

My retired journalist neighbor referred to the base line of skeptical reporting -- just because you said it doesn't make it true -- as "If your mama says she loves you, check it out." I think that applies in a lot of areas, but very much so here.
  14. Previous Offense and Recruiting

$3 million is real money so don't get blinded by the superstars making $6 or $7 million. I can't be the only one bothered that in the year the AD decided to throw money at the football program, finally, they showered it on an unknown of modest accomplishment. (And I think even Collins' boosters...
  15. Previous Offense and Recruiting

Of course I am. Hell, I even pulled for the Lewis teams. How much more loyal can one be? I am just not turning cartwheels over what I see as a desperation hire. I am not much of a Koolaid drinker, at least since my kindergarten years. The AD could have done much better, in my opinion. But...
  16. Previous Offense and Recruiting

Let what go? Did I catch something loose in the hen house? All I know for sure is that a "pro style offense" is to "new" what the Green Bay sweep was to deception, and Collins 2-year record at a mid-major was 15-10, or kind of okay. His hiring by GT indicated to me that Tech is not a glamor...
  17. Previous Offense and Recruiting

Betcha if you put a stopwatch on it you'd find it takes just as long to waggle a call in as run it in. Part of Johnson's maneuver seemed to me was that he was watching the other sideline for substitutions before he dialed something up. I am afraid those looking for the miracle cure in a "pro...
  18. Previous Offense and Recruiting

You may be right but I saw an awful lot of missed pitch opportunities and it seemed to me -- admittedly the TV tube is not the best perspective -- he had already made up his mind to turn it up. Whichever it often turned an exciting offense into ho-hum. It will be interesting to see this fall...
  19. Previous Offense and Recruiting

We agree on one thing. I concluded we ran the keeper so often because Marshall simply could not master the option progressions and decisions. It is not necessarily a criticism except that as QB, he should have. But it is a quick hitting, fast moving offense and hard to master from under center.
  20. TECH OFFENSE

Well, said he in the day's first non sequitur, Ohio State has run the thing forever, even with third string QBs, and come up short. Gimme gunslingers and pass magnets and I'll beat you running the Notre Dame box. As I said, it might be personal, and I still don't like the thing.
