Mostly “Fire Geoff Collins”, some reminiscing, maybe bourbon or other distractions

Then it's no longer on Collins. Even the most competent managers are careful not to cut their underlings off at the knees. Unless they want to do the job themselves and I don't see TStan wanting to put on a headset.

Mostly “Fire Geoff Collins”, some reminiscing, maybe bourbon or other distractions

Others have stated something similar, but announcing you have the resources to make a decision gives you the leverage. If you say you DON'T have the resources to make a change, there is no incentive at all for Collins to make changes to his staff or approach. But by announcing it (whether true...

Mostly “Fire Geoff Collins”, some reminiscing, maybe bourbon or other distractions

It is one thing to have the money to make the change. It is another to simply announce that you have the money.

Can we stay competitive in the NIL era?

It depends on what you want the recruiting staff to do. Just hiring bodies isn't an answer. For fun sake, Lou Holtz commented that when he took over Notre Dame as head coach, ND had a recruiting staff with a grand total of one person. One. Gene Stallings commented that under Bear Bryant...

Can we stay competitive in the NIL era?

One of the models for NIL is to license to electronic games. In that model, the entire NCAA would be represented and each player would receive a monthly check. So it really doesn't matter what the enrollment is.

Can we stay competitive in the NIL era?

This reminds me of Don Coryell. As head coach at San Diego State, he was frustrated that he couldn't get the athletes that the greater LA schools like USC and UCLA were getting. The big offensive lineman and the great RB's were plentiful in that area but not in San Diego. But what San Diego DID...

Can we stay competitive in the NIL era?

The rules will harmonize eventually. I've seen some proposals already for schools who requires SA's to choose a) tuition, room, board or b) NIL. They cannot choose both. I think if the NCAA licensing guys can represent all member schools, the payouts for "most" athletes will be somewhat...

    Is Dabo gone too?

I have no idea where you are going with this. There are two, and only two, football programs in the State of Alabama with broad support ... Alabama and Auburn. Nobody cares about UAB, USA, Troy or any of the other programs. If you think Clark is going to go from UAB to Bama as head coach, I...

    Is Dabo gone too?

Dabo was not retained when Alabama fired head coach Mike DuBose's and his staff in early 2001. His position coach, Tommy Bowden ... brought him to Clemson in 2003.

    Is Dabo gone too?

They shut the program down because of the lack of support and the institutional cost. Yes, they started it back up again but so what? Find five people in the entire state who sport UAB swag. My family got their medical education there and they all support Alabama. UAB is not viewed as a serious...

    Current Environment

Just a few thoughts pop into my mind reading this. First, if we look at Auburn (which is not the best, but it's pretty good) ... many fans show up just for the tailgating and never even enter the stadium. It's organized well, it's welcomed and it provides for the whole game day experience...

    Current Environment

Relax. I have season tix to the Auburn Tigers games as a faculty member. AU is 7-1 and hasn't even come close to filing the arena. The students are there (but they won't be for the rest of December) but the arena itself is probably 50%. This will ALL change once SEC play starts ... those games...

    Is Dabo gone too?

Nobody in the state of Alabama cares about UAB, USA (South Alabama), Alabama State or Troy. Clark might be a good coach, but it's not a program anyone spends any time on. I'm from Mobile originally and you would be hard pressed to find five people there who could name the head coach at USA.

    Is Dabo gone too?

Finebaum made a good point today. Saban has a Heisman Trophy winner QB returning. With a young team that will have a LOT more experience and could be even better next year or two. And, with both of those conditions, every receiver in the country is going to want to transfer to Bama to get reps...

    Is Dabo gone too?

People in Alabama (and I'm one of them) don't even know who Bill Clark is. UAB? It's a medical school. No one gives a hoot about it.

GT hires Chip Long as new OC/QBs Coach

I'm not sure it was a terrible idea. Alabama recycled both Lane Kiffin (a career with no brakes) and Sarkisian (substance abuse issues). Both used their opportunity to restart their careers in the Show. Perhaps Long is of the same bolt of cloth.

    Is Dabo gone too?

Alabama pursued Curry at the behest of Joab Thomas, the university president at the time. He wanted to change the image of the school away from football as its brand. Bad idea.

    Is Dabo gone too?

No. Not going to happen. There was a time when Dabo was the front runner to replace Saban, but that time has passed. Besides, he has a legitimate culture of his own making at Clemson. No, the inside scoop is that the front runner to replace Saban when the time comes is Lane Kiffin. He's still...

GT hires Chip Long as new OC/QBs Coach

Newsbreak noted that Dabo was at the Raiders game this weekend and Davis was in a blazer rather than the usual white Raiders jacket. Rumor is he is interviewing for the Raiders job which would explain the sudden departure of some of his staff. Again ... he WAS there so this is a rumor.

Venable to Oklahoma as new HC

The current inside scoop is that it's going to be Lane Kiffin. He ran an exciting brand of football while there and still has a lot of fans. And with what he's doing at Mississippi, that only adds to the allure. If not Kiffin, I expect a former NFL guy along with unlimited resources.
