  1. Georgia Tech’s Option Play and Offense

When Paul Johnson was first hired, I read The Bird Dog Blog, a Navy site, for insight into Paul Johnson's offense. I thought I read something about this and was able to find his specific comment: http://thebirddogblog.com/2007/10/05/reading-is-fundamental/ The play is called to go in a...
  2. Scrimmage #2

You don't lose two NFL wide receivers and then conclude that Tech will pass it more. Smelter was a stud, he demolished Fuller in the VT game. Waller was 6'6" and bigger than anyone else on the field, and showed it when he became Tech's primary option. I'm trying to remember who pointed out that...
  3. Going for Two: Game Theory

So....he played high school football like he was playing Madden online?
  4. Our Balanced Offense...

I remember a quote from PJ. I'm going to paraphrase as I can't find it, but someone talked to him about how his offense makes defenses play "assignment football". PJ's response was something along the lines of "Because yeah, when you line up against a five wide-receiver empty backfield...you can...
  5. ESPN: Position that needs improvement: Georgia Tech

Smelter being gone will be a big factor. He absolutely could not be covered 1 on 1.
  6. 2015 Home Opener

Labor Day is a big weekend. At least this year I won't have to choose between a football game and Dragon Con (if I choose to go).
  7. Another thing to like about our offense

Bill Walsh scripted play calls from the opponent's 20 yard line designed to score. http://smartfootball.blogspot.com/2007/08/bill-walsh-method-for-game-planning.html Header is "Opponent's 20 Yard Line Plus". It's a long paragraph, but the last line sticks out: "We know that it gets tougher and...
  8. We Have A Good Defense

After the first series I thought to myself "They are going to have their way with us. This will get ugly". I will admit we got a little ugly with the two fumbles. After that...the defense completely shut UGA down. Offense started holding the ball and got UGA's D tired. What a game
  9. 3rd and short

Same thing when I was watching the Eagles vs. Colts Monday Night Football game. They'd get down into the five yard line, and would line up in the shotgun, and then try to run the ball in. Have to be able to lineup and power the ball in those situations (and play action works better as well)...
  10. Crowd Noise

There is a such a thing as home field advantage. It can disorient an opposing offense and feed the home offense. Home field advantage in the NFL is valued at 3 points in the spread. It can make all the defense against an evenly matched team or against a superior opponent (VT 2009, Clemson 2011)...
  11. Crowd Noise

I have to disagree. No amount of cheering would have led to a defender taking the QB on the pitch, not allowing a long completion downfield (into single coverage), or generally not allowed Southern to march up and down the field. Southern went on a 27-0 run due to bad execution. No amount of...
  12. GT V Tulane TO Plays

In Paul Johnson's Georgia Southern playbook, he mentions that the decision making process is made easy on the QB. The decision is "Pitch, until the defense doesn't allow you to pitch". If following that process, then he should pitch the ball in the event they are both uncovered. EDIT: The...
  13. Know Your Opponent: Virginia Tech

VT stuffed 9 in the box last year at times and played the CBs 7-10 yards off. A simple Slant/Flat or Curl/Flat with the A-back running a flat route and the WR running a Slant or Curl would have been nice, *especially* to the side where the OLB (Fuller I think) was blitzing. One guy can't cover...
  14. Passing in 2014

There are *seven* blockers on that play and Miami gets an immediate rush from both defensive ends. No pocket to step up into. No room to escape. Really, all Justin could have done was hug the ball and take the sack.
  15. What is holding Snoddy back?

If NCAA football (the EA video game) was still around Snoddy would be the guy you'd put in at Slot WR and run streaks with. Unfortunately, that only works in a video game.
  16. 2014 Offense Prediction: Return of the Midline Lead Option

That clip reminds me just how good Anthony Allen was at B-Back for us.

  18. ESPN Article on GT Offense

  19. JT and Byerly Style

If we pull off two wins against the big 4, we'd better have more than 7 wins. Tulane, Georgia Southern and Elon are gimme wins if we show up. NC State and Virginia both went 0-8 in ACC play next year, that should be 5. North Carolina, Pitt, and Duke are the next tier. North Carolina is due...
  20. post spring Q&A with CPJ

It does seem like a back to basics approach. Then again, there are two games last year against strong opponents (Miami and UGA) where we got out to an early lead. If we were able to run the ball better, maybe we close those games out (especially against UGA).
