    Smoke Screen On Statistics

You're dead on, cheese. Many things are very different...academics, rules, markets, players, sophistication, training, preparation, facilities, coaching salaries, recruiting competition, conferences, administration, playoffs, bowls, stadium design, fan support, economics...very little is the...

Top three GT games you have been to?

Silas Son: It's hard to beat those games. I would rank them in the exact order you have them listed, btw, and would choose the 1969 ugag game over the 1999 game. Another exciting one you might recall was the 1960 game against Tennessee.

What group or position would you want to stand out?

I usually like to see the QB standout. If that player is performing well, it is probably an indication of at least three things: (1) quality team leadership; (2) superior QB mental/physical skills; and (3) strong team support.

    ICE ICE BABY

SWMBO and I were on the 18th floor of the SF Hilton when the 7+ earthquake hit in the late '80s. The hotel was designed in 3 sections designed to break apart in the event of a major quake. It did, fortunately for us. When I walked out of our room after riding out the quake, our section was a...

Yep. You can't see it, but there's a Buzz flying around one of the gas pumps in my avatar picture.

Congratulations, RW24. What's his time in the 40?

    The day GT sports changed

Correct. You get a 100 and a gold star for neatness, cheese. I used to gas up at an Esso station; also used to gas up at a Standard Oil station. And there were Sinclair, Gulf, Amoco, Pure (my car loved that Pure Firebird gas), Union76... Ah, the good old days. Loved the gas wars back...

Holy Cow. I never realized..... SWMBO has been calling me that for a half-century, so I just took it as my nickname. o_O

    The day GT sports changed

Very good point. I've often felt that GA Tech was geographically misplaced since the southeast high school scholastics left a great deal to be desired. However, I have been encouraged to find that Atlanta area scholastics have been moving on up, especially the northeast burbs. Lots of those guys...

    The day GT sports changed

Right. In 1958, LSU had won the national championship under the coaching of Paul Dietzel. Now there was a colorful and innovative coach. Remember the Chinese Bandits? Probably the most famous second/third team in history. Dietzel had defeated the limited substitution limitation by having a...

    The day GT sports changed

OM was very good. Wasn't it 1957 when Billy Cannon went head-to-head against OM for the national championship? I may have the year wrong, but LSU won the regular season game on a tremendous punt return by Cannon and lost the bowl game by something like 21 points IIRC.

    The day GT sports changed

That's ND playing to their strength and UGA playing to their strength. We need to play to ours. There are a ton of athletic kids who want more from life than playing a single sport for a dozen or less years, and parents everywhere who want their kids to succeed all the way through life. Like the...

    The day GT sports changed

I recall when Bobby talked about that. What is even more amazing is that I, among many others, believed it would happen. We were in booming Atlanta, after all, and nationally famous for football. Either the "Notre Dame of the South" goal was a pipe dream or we fumbled the ball. As Hillary might...

John Dewberry, among others, says "Hi." But I do acknowledge that over the last decade or so Tech has really set the bar high.

Plus all the newspaper, TV, and radio attention given to Tech. Bobby Dodd had a one hour show on Channel 2 with a sports news panel program built around it on Sundays. The AJC was filled with Georgia Tech articles on the sports pages. UGA was small potatoes. Yes, it was indeed a fun time to be...

    Looking Ahead - Defensive Back

Thanks, Boomer. We lost a good one and a great one, IMHO. I've got my fingers crossed, hoping someone will have a real breakout year to fill the void.

    Jemea Thomas tweet

It seems kinda weird that a system that favors the running game hasn't produced a productive NFL running back from Tech, but has produced one of the best receivers in the league. Go figure.

    GT adds a walk-on QB

After watching this film, I felt like I had watched the second coming of Billy Lothridge. Furman Bisher once wrote that Billy the Kid ran like he was looking for a good place to fall down. Thing is, Billy won games by running, passing, kicking, and punting...but mostly by determination. Hope...

Where Do College Football Players Come From

Georgia Tech is like an upscale boutique; UGA is like Walmart. They have a much larger selection at a lower "price" ("price" = academic effort + performance). And when it comes to football, UGA even "appears" to have the better product. To compete as a boutique, Tech needs to have the best...
