If we take CGC's word ("competition is king") then Gibbs will earn his playing time in practice or he won't. The bigger question is will the OC get more creative to better utilize our running back talent?
Agree and his play calling was not favorable to keeping drives going (example on 2nd and 6 we did not run to get the first down; instead we wasted a down throwing incomplete and then came up short on 3rd and punted....again; this was a pattern not to put on the OL). Same general issue in the 4...
I suspect thee are other positives for Curry such as his pre-snap value recognizing sets and getting people in the right place, quickly translating signals from the sideline and communicating on the field, overall touchness (aiding continuity) on the field and hard work preparing for games and...
LBs that line up in the box should be your best athletes on D. In 25 years of setting up a D I always put my best player at WLB and next best at MLB.
Totally agree about Simmons.
. I suspect that thinking played a part into putting C Thomas at Wlb, even though he is really too small otherwise...
Quickest and least disruptive move to level the playing field is to drastically limit the money spent on football in general and recruiting specifically.
I would challenge the statement that smaller players are slower. The opposite is true with obvious exceptions. I certainly agree with the better equipment issue.
I don;t think we are anywhere close to needing weight limits but the trajectory of football (injuries threatening the game) is not...
Progress toward the serious injury issue is to limit the size of the players. Injury levels go way down when the players are much more near the same size (weight), and are smaller. That hurts participation of very large players but opens the door for many times more smaller players (resulting in...
Cap the spending (including salaries) high enough to run the program but low enough so that everybody has a shot at being competitive, combined with expanding the playoffs. There should not be any automatic wins and losses. If the games come down to who plays the best, who coaches the best, and...
Maybe the O scheme, choice of personnel on the field, QB rotation, and the questionable playcalling had something to do with how poorly our Oline was judged?
I think the refs have some improving to do on Oline holding and WR/DB hand holding/pushing (and I think the current rules are unfair to the D and need revision) but instant replay has proven to me how hard it is to get many plays right in real time, especially fumbles, sideline calls, and goal...
The lack of wins was not the frustration I felt. It was the extremely poor play at times, especially on O, and lack of being competitive with teams with similar talent. We were hopelessly out of too many games way too early, even for a team in magnamous transition.
Blocking is an obvious concern and must be improved, but our OC seems to play call based on how we mismatch with the D alignment with often disregard for down and distance, position on the field, and best personnel in the game for the play called. He seems to know his "stuff" about mismatches...
Convenient use of stats. Those numbers are no where near the ones related to the players who actually play in the games. For example I believe we have one Oline player, a walk-on, who is under 225 lbs.
7 young D players impressed me with future potential: Z Walton, Q Griffin, Knight, Chimedza, Domineck, C Bennett, and Yondjouen. Honorable mention to J King.
The scheme was too complex for the talent and the failure of the OC was to not adjust. And too often we did not have the optimum personnel on the field for the play we attempted (examples Oliver not in to run short yardage, Brown in to block on the wide screen, throwing to a slow tight end...
Most of those three and outs were incomplete pass on first down, one yard gain on A gap run on second down, and a short 3rd down gain not getting to the line to gain. Too much rinse and repeat.
