Good GENERAL assessment. Here are some specifics:
Punter made a great saving play as a result of poor blocking. Overall punting is still somewhat below expectations.
Short yardage run D was very good. Overall run D still bad. Tackling spotty.
Only one sack. Too many wide open receivers. Two...
I am bewildered after what I saw on D early in the VT game. We started with the 3-3-5. VT usually lined up with a TE on the line and a back (H-back or TE type?) close in to the tackle away from the TE. That is 7 big people in the box for VT on O. We spread our 3 D people out creating huge holes...
We almost always line up spread out. The D spreads with us giving us some chance to run (if we could block). But when it is short yardage we still line up in spread the field but the D loads the box and we run into not only overmatch but also out numbered. We do not adjust or change and we get 3...
Keeping the chains moving is Coach P's weakness. This failure has much to do with EXTREMELY poor first down production and a scheme/formation/play and player selection issue with short yardage. Not moving the chains bleeds into many other problems, even affecting the D.
The VT game was a good example of one of our crucial O woes: the horrendous third down conversion percentage. One of the main causes is the first down performance (blocking, play calling, execution?). We start way too many drives making one yard + or minus one yard on first down. We run or pass...
Since we are in the sad coaching shape we are in I think the judgement at year end on CGC (since we cannot get rid of him) is to see if he steps up to the necessary changes needed to upgrade our coordinators (and maybe some position coaches also). Not doing so will continue to be this disaster.
The inability to make short yardage is killing us. We have not changed anything....formation, personnel, or play calls. It is an obvious problem and there has been no effort to fix it. Until we can make third and one with some consistency we will continue to lose games that could be won. There...
With our OL injuries it looks like Lay is #1 replacement. He started a lot of the games at C in 2019 but saw limited action in 2020. Last week when the RT left with injury early Johnson moved over to RT and Lay played RG. From a pass protect standpoint it worked pretty well. Based on the Pitt...
Our running game seems to be based on spreading out the D sideline to sideline and run blocking mostly with our 5 Olinemen. I would hope for a change to do more double teaming with the Oline at the point of attack and using a TE or Mason to lead the way on a LB or hybrid DB. We need quick...
Four of his passes were thrown to players too well covered. Two were intercepted. He also threw two others into a very tight window and got away with it. Those are his bad decisions. I agree on some plays he is pressured because of the Oline breakdown but he has to learn to run, take a loss, or...
Third down performance on O and red zone (especially after first and goal) performance (although not a game changer today) caused by inferior Oline play and magnified by bad/unimaginative play calling. Last week the first and goal performance killed us and this week, again, the poor third down...
I thought the move by the coaches to bring in Lay to RG (more game experience than our sub guards last week) and shovel Johnson to RT after #54 went down was a really good move. Johnson did a credible job on the edge in protection and did not see Lay play any worse in the middle than anyone...
My football experience is a little dated so I would appreciate a little help. From these posts and the referenced article I get the impression that the SDE is left side DE and the WDE is right side (presuming a right handed QB). From my older experience the SDE was the strong side of the D (most...
