We don't know the answer but he has shown enough that he should get the opportunity to prove what the ceiling is (contract extension) while GT has the opportunity to get out for a reasonable amount if it doesn't work (buyout). If it works his next agreement is a top part of the ACC commitment...
End of the day I would rather have coaches other schools are interested in versus coaches no one cares about. Even if it means you lose every now and then.
In reality his record right now isn't enough to be a prime candidate but hopefully next time he is toward the end of his contract he is...
The pay is only part of the equation. $2.7 range is in the ballpark for ACC coaches. The issue is buyout if things don't go well. That is at least as important as the salary and really more important. Keep that reasonable. Devil is in the rollover details. :)
Not sure if it would have leaked - but if I was Lloyd and had options where to go I am not sure I take the AZ job given the pushback I am seeing in the press from the ex-players. That is a core constituency that on the surface would be hard to heal. If he walks away then the AD is either...
That is what I am thinking. How much will depend I guess on how real AZ's interest is though I don't think we will be able to outspend AZ if they really want him - which I doubt.
FWIW I expect that next year is going to be an outlier as far as rotations are concerned. Multiple teams including GT will have players coming back and at the same time have players coming through the system who were otherwise ready to play and slotted to replace them. It is going to be a...
You might want to go back to when GT was able to join the ACC with an outdoor weight room and a prez thinking of going to DIii. Got asked to join the highest paying conference even though they really didn't need to split their payouts. Might actually want to thank Duke and UNC.
I used Brad Stevens who there was also some noise about - same as Few. There is a gap. UNC chose to keep it in the family. I like this more than Wes Miller (who is a good coach). The faithful at UNC know Davis and will rally behind him for at least a good while. Time will tell.
He worked at ESPN after the NBA and has had 9 years under Roy as you said. Lot to like there and he has all the soft skills you would want as a CEO / front man kind of guy. Very reasonable hire though not a Brad Stevens level - but he has every opportunity and advantage to be successful.
Don't take my comment as a guarantee he is going to succeed. Never been a head coach, huge expectations, modest (though not terrible by any stretch) roster. My only comment above was players will know who he is. They won't know him as a head coach though.
I doubt he pulls a Daugherty so I...
Doubt that - I expect the potential players that move the needle at UNC have all been recruited by him or met him at AAU and other events. I don't think this is any kind of stealth hire.
Sharpe has announced he is going to the NBA (though I think he hasn't cut all cords) and Brooks could come back but so far as I know hasn't said he is.
No doubt - I do think Hubert will hit the transfer portal hard with some sizzle from his new appointment. If you have some roster holes - and they do - now is as good a time as any to fix them quickly. On another level, I will be fascinated to see if he keeps the same double post focus that...
