For me it is his offensive performance this year (for starters). He took a team with ah Heisman Trophy QB which had the 2nd best offensive rating in the country, which added Jamyr Gibbs, and turned it into the 17th ranked offensive unit in the country. His college success was at locations that had TONS of resources and despite the scholarship restrictions at Penn State, that program is the bellwether of a huge state. He was able to recruit a 5 star QB who decided that getting in early was worth it since the restrictions were only 2 years. Can that be replicated at GT? I doubt it.

NFL results, pro or con, are irrelevant to me in terms of college football.

Bottom line, I think BOB is likely a pretty good selection for a school like Florida with superb resources and strong appeal as "the" in state school. I think he is simply the wrong fit for GT.
Perhaps it is play calling, I don't tune in to Bama every game. From what I have observed, along with some Bama diehards, they really don't have any weapons at WR to stretch the field like in past seasons. If that's the case, BOB is doing well averaging 40 points per game. He isn't my pick, but could succeed with financial support and staffing. Same goes for Key and Chadwell. Ultimately, I want the one guy who can bring in the best overall staff.

I've been focused on Chadwell and Key comments and arguments and haven't paid much attention to the arguments for BOB. He hasn't gotten a lot of votes in the poll, and more than one poster has basically said, "Hell, no."

But given some of the latest chatter (allegedly coming out of Alabama country), I took a look at his resume. Not too shabby.

So, what am I missing? What's the big turn-off about BOB?
It’s rumored that Saban thinks he’s too conservative in play calling, and wants him gone. Bama fans also want him gone. I suspect that’s really Saban’s opinion, and that BOB and Bama’s DC will be elsewhere next year. But, since I’m not someone who spends their life digging into Bama football, take that with a grain of salt.

I’m more interested in Saban’s opinion than the fan’s opinion. Saban is shrewd.

BOB gets credit for the work he did at Penn State. He went into a rough situation and performed above expectations. I don’t know that his experience there translates here. Penn State, even in down years, has lots of talent and tends towards conservative play calling. BOB has been a conservative play caller—we complained about it at Tech after Fridge left. I think it’s his nature.

If you’re a fan that hates it when you know what play call is coming, then with BOB you’ll hate it, because you’ll know every play that’s coming. Bama could be really efficient that way because they didn’t make mistakes, and it didn’t matter if you knew the play—they were getting six yards anyway.

BOB is going to make very few mistakes, and is going to be methodical, and would build a consistent winning program. It’ll be kind of boring, though.

This. He is predictable & lacks risky, innovative Playcalling. Chan 2.0 will be the likely outcome. He needs tons of talent.

I'm ok with boring, the excitement of the last few seasons didn't bring out the fanatic in me.

The problem with your thinking of BOB at PSU is they had an exodus of talent. They were playing walk ons and freshmen. BOB was literally playing with a walk on QB...and he turned him into an All B1G QB, and an NFL pick. BOB was not dealing with PSU's usual deck of cards. What could he have done with a full deck of cards?

BOB may have NFL aspirations (he may not), but his demeanor and management style is perfect for college football. BTW, anyone scared that BOB will go running off for the NFL after a few seasons needs to think logically. If BOB runs off to the NFL, that means he will have done well here. Are you really going to be mad if BOB has several 9-11 win seasons at GT and runs off to coach the Falcons (or whatever NFL team)? GT will be in a MUCH better place and it will be a MUCH better position to attract the next coach.

Nice overview. It's the bolded, "out-athleting" your opponent part that concerns me. Gonna be a while before we can make that work.

Thoughts on recruiting? Are the stars gonna start lining up to play for BOB in a boring, predictable offense?

We're told this matters because (allegedly) they didn't want to play in a "quirky, HS offense" back in the day.

BOB has to follow the strategy of Saban and may want to do things a little different but must do what his boss wants. He would be his own boss as a HC. I am not advocating for him. The last guy we had sure did things his way. Now I am more in the Key Chadwell camp.

I've changed my mind.

I was torn between Chadwell and Key, but I voted for Chadwell because I was intrigued by his offense. That was then.

<sigh>

Now, I'm torn between Chadwell and Key and BOB.

I think we will be okay with any one of these three opti ...er... candidates.
Sooooo it’s a triple option choice for you? Whats your read keys and progression?

I was just researching BOB’s 2 years as OC at Tech- in 2001 (O’Leary’s and Godsey’s last season) he averaged 31 points per game, (for comparison Fridge averaged 32 points/game in 2000). In 2002 (Gailey’s 1st season) BOB averaged 21 points per game with a really bad QB situation and unknown amount of Gailey influence. That crappy offense continued for Gailey’s entire time here so i’m inclined to blame that mostly on CCG.

That's not BOB (or Key for that matter).

Going with someone who runs a common scheme doesn't mean you have to out athlete your opponent to win. The reason coaches earn the big bucks is their ability to get players to execute better than their opponents and game plan ways to take advantage of their players' relative strengths.

No doubt whatsoever in mind, BOB has elite level game-planning and in-game adjustment skills on his resume. You don’t survive in the NFL as long as he did and have that kind of success without that innate talent. He had garbage QB’s the whole time at Texas and still succeeded until he tried to be a GM and HC at the same time (insane).

I like BoB a lot as a HC. He won’t be calling plays here, and has a long list of coaching connections and bona fides as a HC and multiple levels.
My only thought is that he might still have an eye toward the NFL, and if we have the money to build the type of staff he would want.
On the first, I think it is true, but he will have to win enough to get a chance. I would be okay with that.
On the second concern, I think we are committed.

Of all the realistic names mentioned the last two coaching searches, he would be the most accomplished of all but CPJ. P
