Young Temporarily Removed From Roster

Looks like this got overlooked in the bye week doldrums yesterday. Kendal Young has been removed from the roster to focus on academics. Know he had some issues during his recruiting cycle as well that turned teams off him. Hope he gets it all figured out. Sounds like he can be added back as soon as he’s on solid footing academically.

I hope the young man gets things sorted out. Tech is not a forgiving place, but its one that when you graduate one, you really come to appreciate the rigors and the reputation that it commands.

I’m impressed with the focus on academics.

I have a number of athletes in my classes at Auburn and the level of engagement by the athletic office is really good. I wish the non-athletes had the same oversight....

It feels like I haven't ever read his name on practice notes and what-not. I'm guessing (pure speculation) he's had a problem with grades all along and now it has come to this. I hope for his future that he finds a way to make it through, with or without football. He has a chance to meaningfully change the arc of the rest of his life right now.

I can see why a coach would say "suck it up and do both", but it's tough to climb out of an academic hole and I'd think a player in academic trouble wouldn't practice or play their best. It's probably better for the team to tell them to get that squared away before they walk on the field. Plus, who wants to lose a freshman before he develops into the player they can be?

I would imagine so. Otherwise you’d have coaches using this loophole like a minor league team and just “calling players up” whenever they’re needed.

Since you're not shown as a former GT athlete, you can't be expected to know the lunacy that has been spewed from the likes of Glanville & Leachman in the '60s & '70s down through the years. There have been many, many assistants, including Bud Carson, who could no more tell you where the Skiles Building or The 'Brary are than they could levitate.

I'm not surprised some S/As got escorted to class, but those asst coaches are the exception.

I hope he can get through the rough classes and figures out what it takes to be successful in the classroom. A lot of us, including myself, were not prepared for the effort needed. It is easy to fall behind in class due to the pace of information coming at you. I finally figured it out.

And here you go making the exception the rule. You know one coach! What about the other 9/10? What about the GAs? Mandatory class hasn’t always been a thing and sitting in the first 2-3 rows was just implemented by CGC.

Other than reviewing grades and your map to graduation with your Advisor that was pretty much it. Removing yourself from practice NEVER been an option.

One saved round: One thing that is significantly different in Mr. Young's case is that only in the last 3 years have we had an AD - TStan - who is a former GT player & more importantly a former GTAA Academic Advisor.

I dare say TStan would go apoplectic if Mr. Young were not given the opportunity to get his academic act together.

Young was dealing with a lot of stuff and wasnt even sure he would be able to go to college until very late. As a former Vanderbilt commit, I think he is probably capable of getting it sorted out, just needs to buckle down. Its good we are giving him that opportunity.

I feel for him. Tech is tough. I used to struggle mightily at the beginning of the semester and usually do poorly on the first test, but once I got a feel for it I would pull my grades up by the end of the semester. Tech has quite a knack for catching students off guard.

Some of the smartest people I know got killed in the first year. Not everyone is prepared for the amount of discipline it takes to be a good student when you don’t have mom and dad busting your butt to go to school. First time living on your own can be hard

I have enough experience to realize that, when there are two sides to a story, it doesn't mean that either is wrong. Perceptions make reality. To me what is most important under any staff is that SAs feel like they are there to understand and support them through struggles. You can provide a lot of intervention, but it it feels like lack of trust and attempts to correct through shame, a lot of folks are going to respond to that destructively.

Not to mention, in high school most of us didn't have to study. Learning how to really study is what benefited me the most at Tech.
