was curious as to who our opponent played before they play us. it seems that better teams do better against us with a week off prior to playing us which makes sense. and yes i realize there are outliers. the acc did us no favor schedule wise imo.

1. @ boston college...first game <<<
2. mercer
3. vanderbuilt... middle tenn state
4. clemson... s carolina state <<<
5. miami... off <<<
6. @ pitt... marshall
7. ga south... ark state
bye week
8. duke... off <<<
9. @ nc... off <<<
10. @ vt... duke
11. uv... miami
12. @ uga... ul laff <<<

So Duke,North Carolina, and Miami all get the week off before playing GT..... Just a coincidence I'm sure.

Please expound on the conspiracy here. Coincidence or bad luck..maybe. Are folks here suggesting schedulers have it out for GT?

I'm more bent out of shape that VT is only Coastal team not facing CU, LOU, or FSU.

I don't have a strong opinion on this. Some perspective:
  • We have a bye before Duke as well
  • Ga Southern vs. Arkansas State is a league game for them; doubt there's anything intentional there
  • Most non-conference game dates are scheduled by schools before schedulers get their hands on them i.e., Vandy had MTSU and UGA scheduled ULL; good for them if that chose to schedule based on their game with us. We could do the same.
I don't know what preferences ACC teams stated re: GT. I hestitate to say this for obvious reasons... MBob said ADs and schools have no control. For some reason I recall hearing in past years that schools could state certain non-guaranteed preferences, so it's possible there's some influence.

Too many unknowns for me. Curious how this looks compared to years past as well as similar trends for other schools.

Believe me, I get the feeling and it creates some doubt in my mind.

Even if UNC is getting some type of benefit, who's driving it (school vs. Swoff/Tobacco Road Mafia)?

Perhaps it's being done within the rules, and we're just not as good at playing the game? I think one of our historical scheduling preferences was for a non-noon homecoming game. In the grand scheme of what's important for scheduling advantages, that is at best #15 on the list. I think we also tried to avoid home games during fall break. If I remember correctly CPJ also requested non-back-to-back games @ Miami and @ BYU one year, and we got those back-to-back weeks, so there's that.

The GS ArkSt is who cares

That every ACC outside va team without a midseason FCS game got a bye and every other got us after FCS suggests the conf was happy to meet requests.

OK, so each Team we play should have 4 OOC games. I'll say the average is 1 of 4 is actually a decent match up. Most don't probably play two massively talented SEC Teams like GT does this year. That means 3 of 12 of our opponents opponents are weak or 25%. Throw out BC & Mercer, that's 10 Teams where we have a 25% chance of them playing an "easy Team" the week before. The odds of 9 of 10 of those to all have a weak Team or bye the week before is somewhere on the order of .0001% or about 1 in a million. I'd say something fishy is going on here.

We once beat unc quite regularly when they always had a week off before us.

This kind of excuse programming does not matter to good teams. Their leadership would not allow it.

Of all the long list of things we need to be concerned with as a program, this is way down there.

I am not a member of the Tinfoil Hat Society, but even I have some doubt about UNC. It would be interesting to see the break down of scheduling for the last 8-9 years to see which ACC teams, if any, consistently get a break before playing us. This shouldn't include games where both teams have a bye week prior to the game. I wouldn't be shocked if UNC leads that group, as it seems every other year we are complaining about them getting another bye before they play us.

OK. Let's look at this a bit more closely:

1. @ boston college...first game <<< Both teams had equal time to prepare, GT gets bonus because BC loses home field advantage.
2. mercer FCS. Doesnt count.
3. vanderbuilt... middle tenn state SEC scheduling cannot be controlled. Doesn't count.
4. clemson... s carolina state <<< An argument can be made here, but Clemson usually plays it's creampuffs early in the season. Whoever we get week 4 is likely to have an easy opponent prior.
5. miami... off <<< We'll credit this one
6. @ pitt... marshall We'll credit this one
7. ga south... ark state Conference game for GaSo. Doesn't count.
bye week
8. duke... off <<< Both teams have bye. Doesn't count.
9. @ nc... off <<< This seems to be the umpteenth time UNC has had a bye week prior to us. Definitely count this one.
10. @ vt... duke Duke has won 2 of the last 3 vs VT. Not gonna count this one.
11. uv... miami UVA is a dumpster fire. Definitely doesn't count.
12. @ uga... ul laff <<< Cannot control SEC scheduling, and uga often does this to us. Doesn't count.

I only really see three possible teams that might have gotten unfair advantage through scheduling. Miami, Pitt and UNC. I won't credit Clemson because any week 4 opponent was likely to be eating cupcakes the week prior to playing us. It seems we always have two teams play us off a bye, but I am two lazy this morning to do the statistical math on that. As I said earlier, I'd be real interested to see long term data for trending purposes. I'm betting we'd see it washes out in the end.

Disclaimer: I did this quickly. Give me break if I'm off a little.
17-11: ACC teams records coming off bye (2014-15). Note: Some of these are Thurs games with 12 days between games.

Teams that appeared to be "picked on" schedule-wise with ACC opp having bye week prior:
2015: ND, WF, VT each 3 times. No one else more than once
2014: MIA, PITT, SYR each 2 times

This UNC thing may have legs. For the 2014-16 (3yrs) schedules, they have only 2 opponents coming off a bye to play them. I went back to 2009... they have played us after a bye week 5 of those 8 years.

But... I like this...
If we block it doesn't matter how much time they have to prepare.

When I opened this thread I expected to see (nothing against op I just tend to doubt conspiracy theories) some questionable whining about explainable scheduling quirks. But I have to admit this smells a bit like fish guts sitting in the sun for a couple days.

Ok so we have to toss the non conference match ups, agreed. That's not where the trouble lies though. Teams still taking on cupcakes in week 4. No that's usually done with in week 3 but all else being equal it could be a quirk of fate. All else is not equal however. Miami, UNC, and Duke ALL get an off wee before Tech??? Wow. And you say yeah but we get off before Duke also. Yeah that's just great, so our off week advantage gets tossed in the garbage because Duke has off also. Again that just smells to me. Then Pitt gets Marshall. I don't know how good Marshall is now but they have been decent in the past so maybe a coincidence? All the bad smells make me wonder.

Maybe Duke fans can complain we get Ga Southern before our bye. Our bad for scheduling them in the first place. We should schedule SC State instead and insist on playing them before georgie. Did Duke piss off the scheduling committee too or is it really run mostly by UNC lol.

Whether by accident or design the conference slate is not kind. Oh yeah, haven't we gotten the short end of the stick playing the same conference for away b2b a time or two?
