Which are the richest and poorest ACC football programs?

But that's not a realistic view. You can make all the money you want, but when you're almost $220,000,000.00 in debt, it doesn't matter. If we made that kind of unfettered profit, then why did TStan have to dip into the contingency fund to hire new staff? I've been saying for years that money is the biggest hindrance we have, and when people see $27 million in profit without seeing the rest of the story, then it creates an idea that we have the money to do whatever we want. That's not the current case at GT.
The knight commission has a $$ data base for all NCAA schools.

We are looking like bad real estate developers -we seem to borrow to build build build but no money for operation.

Yep. Financially, we've dug ourselves into quite a hole. The debt is a symptom though. Our lack of giving is the main problem. We're trying to stay competitive with a fan base that hasn't funded our ambitions...

Yes and no. That's simply a statement of who makes the most money. We make a good bit, but our debt is so high ALL of our profit is sunk into it.

It's a good thing WHEN we erase our debts and can pour that money into upgrades.

As always, there are two sides of the coin. Some people will point to this and say that we were just making excuses. Others will see the debt and understand the reason why, even with these profits, we were 61st out of 65 in P5 football spending.

Once we clear some debt, we're going to be in a great position.
Some people likely believe they could lose money on every sale but make it up on volume.

Lol I think it's evident to anyone with common sense that we haven't spent like gangbusters. We have debt, everyone close to the program already knows that. Cuse's article is simply pointing out the fact that 2017 we did well financially. But yet a couple of you are hell bent on "Yea but........its no good ya see, because.....this...and.....that...."

Everyone already knows what you're referencing, hell everyone close to the program knows that. That doesn't mean the article he posted isn't factual. Hell, it's good news.

Maybe you should start a different thread about the overall financial state of GT to discuss and cry there, because I'd most certainly cry with you on those well known already well established (a million times) facts.

If u check out our history on the knight data base., we are upping our game on coaches pay but are still short of vt.

Tstan is hoping we can get the ball rolling and make bds an ATL destination. The energy cgc and staff have brought is a great first step. And yes over next few years we need to recruit well , devlope the players, and coach in the games.

I hope we can make bds gold again

And guess what? We all need to did deeper and commit to regular giving or season tickets even if we can't go.

This goes out to all those Tech fans who continually poor mouth our program. Claims of we can't afford this and we can't afford that are plastered all over these fan websites. Debt and long term investments are part of any enterprise with a scale the size of a collegiate athletic program. A lot of these things result in tax advantages that offset millions of dollars in expense.

Georgia Tech has and always has had the financial wherewithal to do pretty much whatever the hell they have wanted to. People a lot smarter than the average Joe on the street watch over and manage the programs financial affairs. So if you want to continue to wring your hands and worry about how in the world we will ever afford to be competitive, go ahead and do so. But the fact is our finances are fine.

METHODOLOGY
Schools can use different methods of accounting and interpret instructions on the EADA form differently, but the following data is regarded as a fair snapshot of the financial picture at these schools, many of which are private and are rarely required to disclose such figures. According to the EADA guidebook, revenue is defined as revenues attributable to intercollegiate athletic activities. This includes revenues from appearance guarantees and options, an athletic conference, tournament or bowl games, concessions, contributions from alumni and others, institutional support, program advertising and sales, radio and television, royalties, signage and other sponsorships, sports camps, state or other government support, student activity fees, ticket and luxury box sales, and any other revenues attributable to intercollegiate athletic activities.Include:

I would also question the data being used as a per sport revenue indicator. The data probably is a "fair snapshot of the financial picture of the school", but does each school split the revenue in the same way? The payout from the ACC was $25-30 million. Wake Forest shows football and basketball combined to be $27 million, other sports to be $16 million, and non-sport specific to be $17.5 million. Clemson shows football and basketball to be $64 million, other sports to be $10 million, and non-sport specific to be $37 million. GT shows football and basketball to be $60 million, other sports to be $2 million, and non-sport specific to be $16 million.

The EADA guidelines, at least what I read of them do not specify how to split revenues. It is likely that the data is not an accurate representation of the schools revenue on a per-sport basis.

Theses are the budget figures for just Football. Also, a graph of the historical numbers. MBob had us down in the gutter with Wake. TStan is getting GT into the top of the middle (where we probably belong). Miami, Clemson and FSU are in different worlds. (Chart excludes Pitt, UL Cuse and ND because they're later to the ACC.)

FSU...........$57,732,569
Clemson... $46,302,285
ND............ $42,822,063
Miami....... $37,268,190
VPISU....... $27,864,229
Pitt............ $27,141,760
Louisville.. $26,858,473
Duke......... $26,200,992
GT............. $25,096,298
Cuse.......... $24,994,763
BC............. $23,477,213
UVA.......... $22,552,489
NCSt......... $21,321,620

$10 mil separates #4 from #5 while there’s only $8 mil separating #5 from #15.

It makes a BIG difference, if it was only a one year jump due to the CFA......that is why. If the jump is based on a one year anomaly.....then being so high on the list is meningless.
We make a 10% return on $109m in investments.

We also had a net operating loss so it’s not like it’s all puppies and ice cream. We’re still spending more than we’re earning.

The Knight commission seems like they are reputable.
If I drill down and look at debt payment over time.
1. For a decade Gt only pays interest - 12,000,000 on 220,000,000. Nice bank or somebody must be guaranteeing the debt?? Not how it works in normal business.

2. The vt debt is being paid down at a good rate but they just increased their debt to 75,000,000.

3. Looking at the elite power 5 show they are so wealthy so could never match their spending if we were debt free. The graph above showing Clemson pulling away are matched or exceeded by others.

The okla state donor site shows the office of president as a top 25 donor every year.

I'd be very interested in learning more about these tax advantages. What can you tell me about those?

This always leads to an interesting debate.

The fact is, to compete at a D1 level (say, Top 25), requires a fairly massive amount of money. Schools like UAB, South Alabama, Charlotte etc ... will be very happy to have a 20,000 seat stadium that promotes the school's name and helps with alumni giving. But to compete for P5 conference championships and be among the elite ... requires money. Lots of it.

I love BDS. But, it is state of the art for 1960, not 2019. Fan experiences and expectations have changed. Streaming and technology has changed what viewers want. Recruiting is far more intensive today than it was. Gene Stallings shared that when he was an assistant at Alabama, they rarely recruited outside of the state. Now ... it's national.

Programs require a constant stream of money for operations and reinvestment into capital projects. We've done a terrible job of it compared to other schools and I for one and glad to see that we at least, seemingly, have a plan.
