All single barrels are hit or miss. Some are more hit than miss, some aren't. Bakers is one of my favorites. I like Booker's too. Just have to find the right amount of water to open up those hot Booker's barrels.
I pretty much drank everything neat. Those two are quite spicy, they’ll grab ya by the throat.

I’m not as experienced of a spirits drinker as most on here but when you say “spicy” I think of Noah’s Mill which I always had to sneak up on bit by bit whenever I drank it.

I drink everything neat. However, sometimes, when the alcohol content is so high, a drop or two of still water will break some of those aramatic rings and open up the flavor profile. Stagg Jr. is the only pour I had to add water. But, I’ve found that having a straw or eyedropper with a glass of still water is very helpful with the high proofs.

High proof will hide flaws in the whiskey. Jackie Zykan taught me that.

It is just a lack of descriptor for me. Some bourbon is boozy high proof tasting to me and some is hot, 1776 has something in it that makes me think you could cook chicken in it

I was in a boutique burger joint in Cary NC years ago, Tribeca maybe? They had Pappy 23 on the menu for $200 a shot IIRC. I had never had it and really wanted to try it but, there isn’t 2oz of anything worth that much except gold.

the waiter chuckled and told me about a lawyer and his wife coming in for dinner one night. They finish their meal and the wife orders a glass of wine and the guy orders the pappy. The waiter brings the drinks out and the husband grabs the shot and dumps it into his coke.

Found this description of Noah’s Mill and it uses the term “spicy.” It’s a small batch 114 proof bourbon that has a smooth but “hot” taste. Pleasant after taste.

Noah's Mill and Rowan's Creek are the same mashbill. Noah's Mill is a year or two older. They're bottled in wine bottles and sold as a premium product, which I don't really consider them to be. I like what Kulsveen family has done with their distillery, but these two are not their best offerings.

Think I heard you or someone else say that before. My bottle was pretty good. It beat Woodford Reserve 😊 anyway.

I like both. Noah's Mill is barrel proof and Rowan's Creek is proofed down. I like Willett products, there's just better options at the same price point. Woodford Reserve is not in the same price range, so there's that. I personally don't like Woodford Reserve, at all. But, that's just my palate. I think Brown Forman has done a great job developing Woodford Reserve.

Yeah, to each their own. I mentioned Woodford because I don’t like it either. In my old age I’ve pretty much settled into Buffalo Trace as my go to. It sips real pretty 😊 to me.

Both Delta and American Airlines serve Woodford Reserve. United serves Buffalo Trace. Since I’m 1K with United and typically fly 1st Class, I drink a lot of Buffalo Trace on airplanes. It has a different profile than most other low rye bourbons.

Buffalo Trace, Eagle Rare, and Benchmark all have the same mashbill. ER is 10-12 years old, BT is usually 8-10 years old. Both are 90 proof. Benchmark is about 3 years old and 80 proof

BT and Eagle Rare were mainstays on my shelf for the last 10 years or so. It’s not all that popular in the NE and a lot easier to get than in NC.

Buffalo Trace is the best $20 bourbon you’ll ever drink for $35. It’s a marketing creation of pseudo good whisky. Much better options for the money.

I’ll take your word for it, however, I fell in love with Buffalo Trace because I liked the taste. I was unaware of any marketing. Years ago a close friend knew I had Knob Creek on my shelf and he gave me a bottle of BT to try and the rest is history.

All I know is half the country will be drinking havily Tuesday night. I have NO IDEA which half, but am pretty certain half will be indulging in some sort of anesthesia….
There’s the other half of us that won’t be happy either way.
