What whiskey are you drinking?

I’ve mentioned before that James Henry is surprisingly good. It was $35 a bottle but I haven’t bought any in a long while since moving from the north Georgia mountains where it’s made.

J Henry & Sons is a Wisconsin distillery just north of Madison and many of the liquor stores here in Illinois go up and do barrel picks with them. Some of it is good and some of it is just alright. I've gone through their tour and they're learning.

This is Moonrise Distillery in Clayton, Ga. It’s a local farm to bottle distillery. Started by former Tech chemistry professor.

I haven’t tried the Blue Note rye, but there is a version of their bourbon they bottle near 110 proof (maybe 107/108?) and it’s great. Maybe they call it “High note?”
I’m deviating from my last post because it’s not a cheap bottle. It’s a good bourbon though… if you’re wanting to throw $60 at a bottle, it’s a good one.

You’re the second who has mentioned bourbons I like along with makers 46… I like my bourbon hot. Don’t dislike makers but it’s just awfully mild. What’s the distinction on the makers 46?

Cracked a bottle of Rittenhouse BIB Rye tonight, about $30. Really smooth with honey overtones. Might replace WT101 in my rotation.

I'm not really a bourbon nerd by any stretch of the imagination but I toured Kentucky Peerless a few weeks ago when we played the Cards and had such a good experience that I'll always advocate for them. Really nice bottle and label also, which I'm probably more equipped to judge on than the nose and flavor profile.

Really nice bottle and label also, which I'm probably more equipped to judge on than the nose and flavor profile.

Judging the nose and palate are very easy. Does it smell yummy? Does it taste yummy? All you need.

Favorites: Buffalo Trace, Basil Haydens, Knob Creek Rye, Bulleit Rye, Wild Turkey Rye, Angels Envy, Old Forrester 1929, Four Roses Single Barrel, Eagle Rare.

A couple spicy ones: Rebel Yell Rye, 1776

Overrated: Stagg Jr, Woodford Reserve Double Oak, Bakers, Bookers, Colonel Taylor

Special Occasion: Elmer T Lee is the best I’ve ever tasted. I kept a fifth for about 4 years. Can usually only find in specialty shops or private sellers.

Blantons is a tent pole. During the pandemic the price went through the roof but it’s back down to normal.

Jefferson is also very good.

Some I agree with...for some we have very different palates. Basil Hayden is Old Grand Dad 114 with an extra year and more water. No thanks for an overpriced 80 proof bourbon.

so funny, I don’t know as if I’ve ever tried old grandad. It was always on the bottom shelf with Senators Club, Fleischmans and Old Crow. I never paid it any mind.

I was in a boutique burger joint in Cary NC years ago, Tribeca maybe? They had Pappy 23 on the menu for $200 a shot IIRC. I had never had it and really wanted to try it but, there isn’t 2oz of anything worth that much except gold.

the waiter chuckled and told me about a lawyer and his wife coming in for dinner one night. They finish their meal and the wife orders a glass of wine and the guy orders the pappy. The waiter brings the drinks out and the husband grabs the shot and dumps it into his coke.

Had a Sagamore Double Oaked Rye tonight.

I have a great Bakers 7 (8 yr 7 months), but it’s a single barrel product so it’s hit or miss. It’s also a little pricey to have to hope for it to be good.

All single barrels are hit or miss. Some are more hit than miss, some aren't. Bakers is one of my favorites. I like Booker's too. Just have to find the right amount of water to open up those hot Booker's barrels.
