I estimation of how old you are just changed dramatically.
yeah a lot of older music

forgot to include Bruce Hornsby + the Range on my artist list, love their three albums.

Modern music (mostly) sucks. Like I can't believe my generation can't put better stuff on the pop charts, it's ridiculous.

and what's funny is, my parents never molded my music taste. they love country, I mostly despise country. I sorta shaped my music taste on my own as I progressed through middle and high school.

This is a bit harsh...there is still good music being played by the younger generation Ramble. But you are right, it is nowhere close to being found on the pop charts. And hasn't been for a few decades or more. One has to seek it out more on their own nowadays.

Old story with slightly different versions has a young Robert Zimmerman in Hibbing, Minnesota searching the late night radio stations and picking up a Black station in Little Rock, Arkansas playing Little Richard. That changed Bob Dylan’s life and sent him on a lifetime quest to discover as many unique voices and styles as he could.

A modern search method might be to look at the artists Spotify suggests based on your current listening. But, like Bobby in Minnesota, the really good stuff still seems to get discovered by accident.

For some reason, this got me to thinking about the Paul Simon and Ladysmith Black Mambazo album "Graceland" for whatever reason. Still one of my all time favorites. btw, I just got Spotify as a Father's day gift this week. Absolutely loving it. It goes along witth my Sirius, Pandora and Youtube for exploring new music. I think their algorithms do a very nice job.

Used to have a bunch of cassette tapes of LadySmith Black Mambazo.

Even with Spodify’s algorithms it still takes me a long time to find new music I really like. I’ll listen to probably 50 suggestions before I find even one song I want to add to a playlist. There’s just so much music out there and I have “particular” tastes.

It is a bit like panning for gold...you DO have to sift through a lot I agree and not everything is going to be a win. The algorithms though save a bit of work by "prescreening" or "filtering" out a lot of stuff. Like you, I seem to have particular tastes and I would be hard pressed to be able to articulate what those are. I would find it easier (just a bit) to describe what I don't like.

I purposefully carve out time to seek out new music and new artists. It’s so easy to lock into a genre and time. When I was a teen, I saw adults at the pool who would only play what they listened to as teenagers, and decided I’ve wouldn’t do that.

As an adult, I see adults playing their teenage music at the pool, too.

When I was at Tech, I was a music critic at the Technique. It wasn’t based on skill—I wrote features, it was fun writing, and someone had to do it. Looking back, I probably could have scored some concert tickets that way, if I were crafty. We got random college radio music in the mail (yes, music labels mailed us physical media), and I’d rate the albums. I listened to a ton of stuff.

I occasionally listen to Beyonce’s Cowboy Carter and not only enjoy a lot of the songs but also get a kick out of the cameos on it by Dollie Parton and Willie Nelson.

I’ve been a Dwight Yoakam listener since at least the mid-90’s, and when I heard Bang Bang Boom Boom with Post Malone, I thought Post Malone rolled out some of the best country tunes in a long time. It’s crazy how pop stars can make good country.

Old Town Road by Lil Nas X rocked the country world, and should have

The streaming services don’t do a good job of introducing new music. When Sirius and XM were new, I was flying all around and renting cars for work, and I could tune into one of their curated stations and find good new music—even Latin or French.

Now I listen to WXPN, KEXP, WRFG and other “non commercial” stations, because they have a bit more freedom. (WRFG is for Blues, Zydeco, and other old stuff that makes me happy)

You can still get classic WRAS, but it’s not the same as it was.

If y’all have a few sources of new music, I’d love to hear ‘em

Back in the day WRFG, WRAS and WREK were go to stations for me.

My news feed subscriptions include several music and the arts publications. I too spend time each week hunting for and listening to music. It’s time consuming for sure.

I’m still happy with Sirius. I like especially the curated shows on both the Blues channel as well as the Alt Country station. They have legit people (Joe Bonomassa, Steve Earle, etc.) hosting their shows and they can get into the weeds deep enough for my taste. Speaking of unusual forays into country music, Elvis Costello cut a “ country” album years ago. It includes a duet with George Jones. This album is absolutely brilliant and worth looking into if you are interested. Seems like something that would interest you from what I can gather.

I’ma huge Elvis Costello fan :D

I was just listening to KXT while mowing the lawn, and they played him, Earth Wind and Fire, Black Keys, Amy Winehouse, the Go Gos, and a few artists that were new to me, and every song slammed

Here in rural America we mow our lawns with a tractor. You need a good set of ear buds to listen to music while sitting on a tractor.

But, all of you have great tastes in music.

This all got kicked off because people don’t know where to find good new music

Just this month, The Black Keys released Peaches, and I like it

Kacey Mulgraves released Middle of Nowhere, and I like it

Tori Amos has a new album out

Lady Gaga has a live album, and she’s talented

Kurt Vile has a new album

Dua Lipa has an album

Chainsmokers have an EP

Billie Eilish has a live album

Peter Frampton has an album out

Taj Mahal has an album out. So does Niel Diamond.

Willie Nelson does too (and I’m going to listen to that one)

This looks like a good list, too: https://www.albumoftheyear.org/must-hear/

Neil Diamond and music should not be used in the same sentence.

I saw Taj Mahal earlier this year (RIP) .

On a related note, if you ever get a chance to see a full production of The Symphonic Blues Experience with Morgan Freeman, cancel everything and jump on it.
