Triple Option

The offense works regardless of the presence of modernbconcepts if there is talent on the field to make it work. I’ve said before that when CPJ has talent, the 3O was almost unstoppable. When he didn’t have talent, it was only slightly more potent than any other offense. Talent is especially important at QB. When Army/Navy/Air Force have a good QB, they usually go on runs with 9+ wins, just like Tech did. It’s why Lamar and the Ravens are almost unbeatable right now. Not only can Lamar run the option, he’s a great passer

Isn't that true of ANY offense? The better tbe talent the better the offense looks. That's the crux of the flex option, elite recruits just didn't want to play in it. We're seeing it play out in real time with CGCs recruiting.

You had Urban Meyer go to CPJ to get tips on running some of the concepts, but didn't want to be associated with "triple option". Even CPJ admitted in a Sports Illustrated article that kids these days didn't want to play in it.

CPJs offense is one of the best offenses in all of football, but it's also a double edged sword.

Going back 30 years:
a. We had an offense AND a defense. Then:
b. We had neither, then:
c. We had an offense but no defense, then:
d. We had a defense but no offense, then:
e. We had an offense but no defense, then:
f. We had neither.
Seems like the next cycle is having an offense but no defense.
You're not very good at reading patterns.

Maybe the lack of recruiting was even worse than we realized. When the academies running the TO come up with better teams--the effort (or something) is not there in getting the guys.

Academies are unique in that they don't have limitations so they take classes of liek 34 and 35+ players then they train them up resulting in most of their starters always being seniors that have a lot of time learnign the systems. Its a night and day thing.

The only team we had that kinda mirrored an academy team was 2014 since we had mostly seniors and rs juniors on that 2 deep.

It's true Go look at an academy class. And then look at their teams they are not beholden to scholarship limits because none of their players are actually on scholarship.

Navy was a little younger this year at the skill positions than normal but look at that OL depth chart. That's a lot of age.

You cannot compare anything in the world of recruiting to the academies and honestly with the change that Trump just pushed through where if you are nfl caliber you don't have to serve and can go there? I think we will see some 4 star guys strongly consider it. Military is a hell of a backup plan for a lot of those guys.

Some of what you’re trying to say is true, obviously. I agree with some of it.

Boring football unless you’re an option junkie. Would be like an NBA team trying to play 4 corner offense.

Good while it lasted but happy to move forward and never look back. It was terrible for our brand and stunted our growth as a program
Going 3-9, yes that's much better for our brand.

I’ll always miss it. So fun to watch CPJ play chess, even though we got stonewalled from time to time. It’s a shame he couldn’t find a competent DC during his tenure. Still think CPJ+Tenuta would have been dynamite if they could survive each other in the locker room.

CGC seems to be on a track towards something that could be pretty big. He’s built the framework for a recruiting engine in a short period of time. I’m okay with being a defensive-minded team, but until he fields a decent offense theres gonna keep being nostalgia for the option. I think only Clemson had better offensive number during CPJs tenure in the ACC.

Patenaude gets somewhat of a pass this first season. But he’s on a short leash for me. Still can’t unsee running six consecutive short-yardage plays out of shotgun against Clemson on opening day.

I think they still have their commitment but can go pro right after graduation

The offense works, but you can no longer make it the focal point. It needs to be implemented in a way that meshes with modern concepts and schemes.
Correct.

The label that is put upon it is a detractor. And once it is on you, you can’t get away from it. It was only one of the plays but it becomes the narrative. “Diving at knees” “Cant play from behind” etc.

I’m watching the 30 for 30 about Ricky Williams and once the media portrays you as something. Game over.

I definitely enjoyed that as well but as I’ve said glad we have moved on.

That last statement reminded me of when I knew I wanted Gailey gone. We were playing at home, were down by a TD, a couple minutes left and ran 3 or 4 times straight up the gut for the loss. Everyone booed their asses off. There’s probably a clip out there. Might even look for it.

Edit-thought it was the UNC game but I just watched that on YouTube and we won that one. Good to keep researching

Oh want to add something because it was late last night and i wasn't clear about it.

What i meant by the 2014 resembling an academy team comment was that particular team was basically made up of the people who had a long time in system. So when you put an exceptional athlete at QB it became a juggernaut because everyone else knew exactly what they were doing which meant JT only had to focus on doing his job. After 2014 due to injury, attrition or bad luck it seemed like we were forever starting youth.

The 2014 pre Pitt season was bad.
Barely beat 2 teams - ga southern and vt and then lost to good duke team and a crummy unc.

Then we added a new wrinkle - all large ol that did not cut block- one that drove the defenders back.
The sr heavy skill players were awesome.
Those pitt and post pitt games were awesome
