I don't know about UGA, but in Alabama, the most fanatical, moronic Bama fans never even attended the school. They are the ones you really have to worry about pissing off.
Most of the alums of various schools get the rivalry and shrug it off. I hope that was the case here.

It sounds as though the attack was using a very commonly exploitable security hole, but that doesn't mean it's easy to do web security. I doubt there was much interest in making it more secure anyway. And I'm sure he could have covered his tracks if he wanted to as well, but clearly he didn't expect criminal charges as a result.
