OK, D1 Baseball came out with their ACC review. I got the whole review but don't have a subscription any more, I'm only registered. https://d1baseball.com/season-preview/2018-conference-previews-acc/ This part only covers the most important part - The Arms. Big news:
  • Curry fast ball up to 95 mph and added a slider and cutter. Still my clear #1.
  • Hughes hasn't regained all velocity but back to 91-92 and quality slider.
  • English in mid-90's and quality slider. Now my #2.
  • Mention of Shirah having advanced three pitches. But I need to see it to believe it. Hard for any true Fr to adjust to ACC play.
Here's the overall summary of Arms with this stuff added in:

Potential This Year (1-10) Name Position B-T Class Comment

· 10 Xzavion Curry RHP/SS R-R So. Great in W&G, 15 starts last year. 82.2 IP and 5.23 ERA as Fr. Overused out of necessity last year, I think could be best pitcher this year. Hall talked about having to put Curry in bullpen so he can play infield if others don’t step up fielding and we get other effective starting pitchers. I bet we need him as a starter at least early on. 95 mph this year, adding slider and cutter to fastball and curve.
· 9 Tristin English P/1B R-R R-So. Great potential if can stay healthy. Expect rough start as gets back into form. In December Hall said English could be #1 starter. Fastball in mid-90’s and quality slider.
· 9 Jonathan Hughes P R-R R-So. Good in W&G, 8 starts last year for 5.68 ERA in 25.1 IP. Expect much better this year as last year was first after injury year. Had 91+ mph fastball back in fall. Hall in December thought English could be in top 2 pitchers. And Hughes reportedly has three pitches working now. Hasn’t regained all of velocity, but to 91-92 mph and has good slider.
· 8 Jared Datoc P R-R Sr. Potential closer, 2nd most used pitcher last year (57.1 IP) behind Curry. Datoc was first pitcher Hall mentioned as potential closer in December.
· 8 Micah Carpenter P R-R Jr. Potential closer. 2017 team low 2.56 ERA in 31.2 IP.
· 8 Jake Lee P R-R Jr. 6 starts last year, total 51.2 IP and 6.10 ERA. Hope high ERA was due to no good alternative last year.
· 8 Keyton Gibson P R-R Jr. Good in W&G. 8.10 ERA in 36.2 IP 2017. 4.40 ERA in 43.0 IP in 2016.
· 7 Connor Thomas P L-L So. Great in W&G. 2017 had 10.1 IP and 11.32 ERA. We'll see if he has made the jump this year.
· 6 Ben Schniederjans P R-R R-Sr. 9 starts last year. 5.06 ERA in first year back.
· 6 Bailey Combs P R-R Jr. Potential. 2017 14 bullpen outings with 5.21 ERA, 2016 11 bullpen outings with .64 ERA. Hope high ERA was due to no good alternative last year.
· 6 Garrett Gooden P R-R So. Unknown, 2017 4.1 IP and ended year as 1B. Great potential from HS.
· 5 Hugh Chapman P/C R-R Fr. Effective starter in W&G game.
· 5 Andy Archer P R-R So. Limited 2017, 9.1 IP and 4.82 ERA
· 5 Will Shirah P L-L Fr. Enroll in January, Hall is high on him FWIW. Perfect Game has him as 2017 Underclass 3rd Team. Advanced three pitch mix. Stats at http://www.maxpreps.com/athlete/will-shirah/JaNtGMw1EeW-8KA2nzwbTA/gendersport/baseball-stats.htm
· 4 Oscar Serratos SS/P R-R Fr. In December, Hall talked about Serratos with a “Bugs Bunny Changeup” whatever that is. 94 mph fastball. May be closer.
· 3 Jake Brace P R-R Fr. Ranked as high as 15 RHP in Ga and 293 in US. by Perfect Game. He is a legacy, so I like him.
· 3 Brant Hurter P/1B L-L Fr. May be back for season after broken hand. But expect to take a while to get sharp again.
· 2 Patrick Wiseman P/IF L-R Sr. Injured last year. First two years pitched total of 10.0 innings
· 1 Jay Shadday P L-L So. Out for at least year with Tommy John
· 1 Joseph Mannelly 1B/OF/P L-L Fr. Primarily a 1B in HS which was his ranking area by PG.
· 1 Cole Neuber P/OF R-R Fr. Primarily a OF in HS which was his ranking area by PG.
· 1 Cameron Turley C/IF/P R-R Fr. Not really pitcher but listed on roster as one.

GTnavy, why are you doing this???? Reading the report I’m starting to feel like we have a chance this year. Then I think about all those guys we had 0-2 and then HBP and all those walks that came around to score in what seemed like every other inning. Just ...... gotta...... block ........ out ......... those ........ negative ........ thoughts

Apologies if this is repeat info... but end of this story says Micah Carpenter is recovering from a broken collarbone. Sounds like it'll be awhile before he is ready to play.

http://thewhiteandgold.com/defense-a-focus-early-in-spring-practice-p704-251.htm

News to me. But if this is the only injury, we are doing much better than last year. I'll put in the summary when we get more info. That summary is the best way for me to keep the bigger picture!

Is this the only injury? (Rhetorical question)

My “12 days until first pitch” guess is that our opening weekend starters will be Curry, Lee, and Hughes. I think it’s safe to say Datoc will be the closer. Probably will be used like our closets for the last few years where he may go multiple innings as needed. I think when Carpenter is back healthy, the two of them will split that role. Then a combination of Thomas, Gibson, Winborne, Schniederjans, and Combs all will get first crack as mid inning relievers. Not sure if CDH will go with a freshman as mid-week starter or go with someone like Schniederjans there. Would love to see Gooden get his control down and get some innings. Then I’d expect Chapman, Hurter, and Brace to be the top two freshmen to see the mound early.

I feel like we may not see English on the hill for the first few weeks (especially if it’s still cold), but I fully expect for him to make a very positive impact on the mound during this season. Not sure in what role, but he had the best stuff coming out of HS of any P on our roster.

I like it.

Curry is a no-brainer... same role as last year.

Lee pitched really well down the stretch last year. IIRC...wins in his final 3 decisions including... these 3 big (at the time) ACC games.
- Complete game win against Duke in his final regular season start.
- Win over Pitt... went deep into game (7IP?)
- Win in long relief v VT

Thomas is the only lefty in this group of 3. He (like many on the staff) is a question mark who has a lot of upside, I think.

Yeah, I like this rotation on paper. Power pitcher, finese/contact pitcher, and then SO machine. They just need to pitch well now and trust their stuff. I would like to see Hughes win the weekday spot to free up Shirah, Hurter, and Chapman in the pen.

I know English is going to be brought back slowly, but it's too bad his name isn't in the mix before the Freshmen.

Also, what ever happened to Gooden? He had a bad year last year for GT and then bad Summer Ball with a 7.71 ERA (23.1 IP) on the Green Bay Bullfrogs.......

This just my onion, but I sometimes think the Summer Ball thing does or can do harm to our guys.

I don’t know fellas. We just gotta hope that some of our guys who have been inconsistent (at best) in their first couple of years “figure it out”. I do like what I am hearing about X, adding more pitches and really learning how to be a pitcher at this level. He showed last year that he can be really good at this level. Are we still discussing him as an “everyday” guy as well, or is he PO? Not sold on Lee yet, but as Fred pointed out, trending up at the end of last year. The rest of the potential starters to me are guys we are hoping come through rather than expecting to come through, which is a bit unsettling

OK, we just heard the last of the Around the Diamond series with bullpen pitching. I updated the stuff below in bold for the starting pitcher and bull pen info.

I also reordered the players from whom I'd expect will have the most positive contribution on down. It's a lock for me. I hope I pass with 76% correct at the end of the season.

· 10 Xzavion Curry RHP So. Great in W&G, 15 starts last year. 82.2 IP and 5.23 ERA as Fr. Overused out of necessity last year, I think could be best pitcher this year. 95 mph this year, adding slider and cutter to fastball and curve. Projected opening day starter. Only pitcher Hall sees as dominating if in a jam.
· 9 Jonathan Hughes RHP R-So. Good in W&G, 8 starts last year for 5.68 ERA in 25.1 IP. Expect much better this year as last year was first after injury year. Hughes reportedly has three pitches working now. Hasn’t regained all of velocity, but to 91-92 mph and has good slider. Hall says about 100% now.
· 9 Jared Datoc RHP Sr. Potential closer, 2nd most used pitcher last year (57.1 IP) behind Curry. Datoc is the one closer Hall seems comfortable with going into the season.
· 9 Jake Lee RHP Jr. 6 starts last year, total 51.2 IP and 6.10 ERA. Hope high ERA was due to no good alternative last year. Hall says Jake could start Tuesdays or wherever needed at end of season.
· 8 Tristin English RHP/1B R-So. Great potential if can stay healthy, but Hall says he’ll start off slow since only 12 months from Tommy John. Expect rough start as gets back into form. Fastball about 93 and quality slider.
· 7 Connor Thomas LHP So. Great in W&G. 2017 had 10.1 IP and 11.32 ERA. We'll see if he has made the jump this year. A potential starter Hall mentioned. Our “best” LHP.
· 7 Micah Carpenter RHP Jr. Potential closer mentioned second by Hall. 2017 team low 2.56 ERA in 31.2 IP.
· 7 Keyton Gibson RHP Jr. Good in W&G. 8.10 ERA in 36.2 IP 2017. 4.40 ERA in 43.0 IP in 2016.
· 5 Ben Schniederjans RHP R-Sr. 9 starts last year. 5.06 ERA in first year back. Hall plans to limit him to 1 or 2 innings since he was inconsistent last year.
· 5 Bailey Combs RHP Jr. Potential. 2017 14 bullpen outings with 5.21 ERA, 2016 11 bullpen outings with .64 ERA. Hope high ERA was due to no good alternative last year.
· 5 Hugh Chapman RHP/C Fr. Effective starter in W&G game. One of top 3 FR potential starters Hall mentioned.
· 5 Brant Hurter LHP/1B Fr. May be back for season after broken hand. But expect to take a while to get sharp again. One of top 3 FR potential starters Hall mentioned.

· 5 Will Shirah LHP Fr. Enrolled in January, one of top 3 FR potential starters Hall mentioned. Perfect Game has him as 2017 Underclass 3rd Team. Advanced three pitch mix. Stats at http://www.maxpreps.com/athlete/will-shirah/JaNtGMw1EeW-8KA2nzwbTA/gendersport/baseball-stats.htm
5 Oscar Serratos SS/ RHP Fr. In December, Hall talked about Serratos with a “Bugs Bunny Changeup” whatever that is. 94 mph fastball. Hall says may be an inning eater.
· 4 Garrett Gooden RHP So. Unknown, 2017 4.1 IP and ended year as 1B. Summer ball, 17.2 IP with 7.13 ERA. Great potential from HS. Something isn’t right with him.
· 4 Andy Archer RHP So. Limited 2017, 9.1 IP and 4.82 ERA
· · 3 Jake Brace RHP Fr. Ranked as high as 15 RHP in Ga and 293 in US. by Perfect Game. He is a legacy, so I like him.
· 2 Patrick Wiseman LHP /IF L-R Sr. Injured last year. First two years pitched total of 10.0 innings
· 1 Jay Shadday LHP So. Out for at least year with Tommy John
· 1 Joseph Mannelly 1B/OF/ LHP Fr. Primarily a 1B in HS which was his ranking area by PG.
· 1 Cole Neuber RHP/OF Fr. Primarily a OF in HS which was his ranking area by PG.
· 1 Cameron Turley C/IF/ RHP Fr. Not really pitcher but listed on roster as one.

@GTNavyNuke Looks like you/we overlooked Winborne. I'm respectfully requesting an update... just one more.

Well, you get what you pay for :stinkyfeet: Thanks, I've missed him from the beginning........ Winborne is one who may step up for us.
